@Joy Georgina The resources agree to provide the treatment in exchange for publicity on the show. Phil and his show do not pay for this treatment. There is no treatment for some of the person's mental health issues, like personality disorders or delusional disorders. Treatment for the affected family members is possible, though.

MSW student-we were just talking about Dr Phil in my advanced practice skills class and you’re absolutely right, we discussed how Dr. Phil is a great example of how NOT to treat clients. I think the episodes that enrage me the most are the ones where he brings people with obvious delusional disorders and turns them into spectacles where the entire audience is just laughing at them. He doesn’t even address the disorder or explain delusions at all.

Dr G et alia, Dr P discovered at some point that he can exploit his quick wit and knowledge to produce entertainment! This is probably 95+% of his motive - fame and fortune. His 'guests' are carefully vetted through a formulaic production process too! No offense but isn't this all abundantly obvious??

"Dr" Phil is rude, arrogant and narcissistic. I cannot watch his show because I get so angry with how he speaks down to people. He doesn't seem to care that he could be hurting them or worsening the situation they are there to get help for. I sometimes wonder why anyone would go on his show knowing how he treats people. @@Taureanfitness Dr Phil is, to me, a grifter. He will do anything for 💰. He and his son run Doctor's on demand, an expensive therapy system which connects patients to therapists. Biggest problem is that many are just councillors, not trained Medical Therapists. His wife has a major lifestyle and cosmetics programme. The only honest McGraw is the son who's a talented singer and guitarist. He refused all offers of promotion from his father. He wants it all to be his own work.

Excellent analysis. My ex watched the show when we were together and it always bothered me, for many of the reasons you've mentioned. The one I noticed the most was how he couldn't deviate from the narrative. It was like he had a script in his mind, he had a conclusion he was leading to, and like he was a director of a play guiding the other performances where he wanted them to go. The more people tried to deviate and actually talk about their experience or the more (understandably) frustrated they'd get by his redirection of the narrative, the more bullying he'd become. He'd flat out tell them to stop talking, and then publicly shame them on national TV for their anger/uncooperative nature/lack of agreeableness, or use weaponized psychology such as throwing a term like "emotional confusion" as an insult to "put them in their place". It seems like a form of narcissistic abuse (ie demanding narcissistic supply, blaming/shaming/belittling those uncooperative with providing it, they react negatively, the narcissist feels validated that the other person is clearly the problem). The whole show and his attitude feels so exploitative and damaging.

I was on the Dr. Phil show and he humiliated me and did not ask about my background, I am diagnosed with CPTSD and am a Trauma survivor. I really believed in him, and that he could help me, and instead, he made everything look like it was my fault without getting to the root of the problem. I felt like I was fighting for my life. He is still showing me on the show which was aired 12 years ago. It still is humiliating and I do not know what to do. He really is terrible. He keeps the trauma alive and he puts himself in the best light. He cut off a lot of the things that I said in the show so that he looked good. After the show, I was dismissed like garbage and they had nothing else to say to me.

Well, there is NO WAY you will get a bunch of polite refusals like, “no, thank you, I'm headed to Paris that week for a stay at my pied a terre-- Ta!" No-- not a chance! It is FAR more likely that a bunch of mentally ill people who are SUFFERING in their own lives, will grab at any chance to escape from their own suffering. They may even KNOW that, EVEN THOUGH it is probably going to make their overall lives worse, at least getting pampered by Dr. Phil Show staff will make them feel better for a little while...

All of these are examples of pandering to an audience to get viewers. His audience exists mostly of simpleton, low to average educated folks. These people embrace the “ah-shucks, I’m a simple country boy” act. Also keep things black:white, right/wrong terms because it’s easier for the audience. . Things that have gray-area or multiple variables relating to mental health conditions or a problem do not do well in a tv time slot, so keep it simple. Claiming to be the expert works because compared to everyone else watching and guests on the show he is MORE of an expert. Make sure to keep your audience dumb and get people on the show that are way to manipulate. And boom! You get ratings!

The episodes of his show that piss me off the most are the ones where he brings on so-called “Troubled Teens”, only to send them in to the Troubled Teen Industry. Also there’s the fact that a couple of times on his show when discussing certain LGBT issues, he had on as the opposing side, representatives from Focus on the Family. Add in how he somehow always bring up his own born-again Christianity, then who he is and what he stands for starts to make a sad sort of sense, especially being sad with what he does to kids who are suffering. I recently graduated with a degree in addiction counseling, and I learned about things like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psycho-Analysis and Psycho-Dynamic Theory among other areas of counseling, most of which I don’t hear Phil mention in most of his shows. Oh, and the Bullshit terms he mentions such as “Outrageous Over-Shadowing like what the fuck does that even mean? I put in a lot of work both in hours, energy and focus to get my degree, and also had to really focus and prove myself while working on getting my degree especially since I’m totally blind, and to see how Phil makes not only a mockery of counseling, but also treats people like shit under the guise of helping them is absolutely disgusting. I hope this season of his show is his last, or at least close to being his last! Thanks for this video!

His constant bowing and scraping to the evangelical community is probably what annoys me the most. Real therapists generally try to avoid revealing or discussing specific identifying info re themselves. This is done for a number of reasons, but the focus should be primarily on the client, not the therapist, except as it concerns their credentials and/or education.

I've heard a very disturbing anecdote about the Dr. Phil Show. He had an alcoholic on the show who appeared drunk on set. The accusation is that the producers made sure the person had access to alcohol backstage in order to make sure they would be intoxicated during the show.
@samanthapeters8314
@samanthapeters8314 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with this accusation is it could be half true. Some alcoholics start having seizures if they go without alcohol for too long. Alcoholics really need to speak with their doctor before quitting alcohol. So the doctor can make a plan for them to gradually quit alcohol.

Plus the videos leading up to him being on stage, he was nowhere near that drunk, he was trying to detox himself and only drinking 2 shots every 5 hours, and then he comes out PLASTERED. At the very least staff should have made sure he couldn't get alcohol at all besides to keep him from seizing if he was "so close to death"

@@hansslane7080 err that's not true. At all. Alcohol withdrawals are extremely painful, but I've gone through them probably around a dozen times. People need help for alcohol addiction even before they get withdrawals that are so severe they kill you, and we're still alcoholics even if we haven't spent the last 20 years drinking nonstop. I'm on 36 hours of my current withdrawal and it's so severe that I'm having hallucinations and all the other symptoms of dangerous withdrawal. Ill breathe a sigh of relief after the next 36 hours, because then I'll more than likely be out of the range of DTs and seizure. Again, I've gone through these withdrawals many times, and even managed several months of sobriety between them.

I’m from UK so have seen very little of Dr Phil, but having had extensive counselling, the major difference I find astonishing that he continually desires to find out who’s to blame. This has never happened to me, in fact I’ve been taught more why people behave in a certain way, how to deal with it. No blame is ever attached to anyone. He’s appears to be rather self important, but that comes with the success he has had is bound to sadly lead to this! I’m just very relieved every never met a Dr Phil in real life, as I’m sure I’d still be hospitalised now!!! Photographs are astonishing to the rest of the world, as experts without a financial interest seem to agree it’s accurately is the same as tossing a coin.

A counselor once told me to not watch any talk shows because they are 45 minutes of a problem with only 15 minutes of any solutions. I see and agree with your conclusions and wanted to mention that one reason McGraw seems so "prosecutorial" is he did jury evaluations and that's where he met Oprah. I have a tiny defense of Dr. Phil in a story about a mom with a screaming little kid. He told the mom that she was stressing her child out. He said back off and the child will back off. I found value in that as a daughter of a very critical mother. Like I felt less alone knowing that mothers could be creating the problems I thought were MY problems. All the things outlined in this video and more are definitely more of why I haven't watched in years. Thank you.

I saw some minutes of a Dr. Phil episode. A family had reached out to him about their teenage son that they were having some kind of problems with. So the next scene we saw a camera team inside their house opening the son's bedroom door, and there he was, sleeping in his bed and waking up with lots of strangers around him, filming him. Then he was in the studio, listening to Dr. Phil telling his parents how they should send him away, and he started crying. Not sure how such himiliation could help the boy with whatever his struggles were.

I wish somebody who goes on the Dr. Phil show would vlog the whole entire experience from beginning to end, starting from when the producers first contacted them, to when the show aired on TV. Record all their phone calls with the producers, save all their emails, and maybe even go as far as using a hidden camera to record their interactions in the studio and maybe even the show itself, from their point of view. Then release the videos on KZbin well after the show aired. But I'm sure that they probably sign all kinds of legal agreements saying that they won't do stuff like that and the show would probably sue them into oblivion and immediately remove the videos, if they did. I sure wish someone would try it, though. There are some videos on KZbin where people talk about what happened when they went on the show, but no one who went on for any serious reason like a mental illness. Dr. Phil really sells himself as someone who serves to educate people about mental health. He hooks up his guest with expensive high end treatment and therapy they probably couldn't get if they didn't go on the show. I've seen family members of some of his former guest post on some forums that they help the show got them, totally turned their life around for the better. I've seen others, such as a woman who called the Howard Stern show, for example, say that it was a total waste of time and they were humiliated. Dr. Phil is actually highly involved with the mental health scene in California. He's involved with a lot of mental health related non profit organizations. He's good friends with Charles Sophy, who is the medical director of the LA Department of Children and Family Services.

There was one show of Phil McGraw’s that made me discontinue watching him completely. It featured a young woman who apparently was addicted to Hydrocodone, and willing to come on the show to seek help. One of the first questions he asked her was how many pills she took per day, and her answer was quite a bit. She seemed to be a well-mannered, intelligent young lady who answered his questions as honestly as she was able. He then asked her if she took any pills before coming to the studio that day, and she replied that she did. Suddenly he became arrogant, self-righteous and accusatory and said: “Are you telling me you came on this show high? How dare you have the audacity to do so!” The girl was taken aback, and became meek from his overpowering feigned anger, and was almost tongue-tied from then on. My heart went out to her because if she was addicted to this drug, and came on the show without having taken any, she would be having withdrawal symptoms, or stomach issues, or extreme anxiety. My reaction to that whole scenario was a total loss of confidence in anything he said from then on, and I have never watched another show. What kind of therapist shames his clients in front of an audience in a way that leaves them worse off than when they came in. The poor girl should have said: “Why do you think I came here in the first place if not to get help in stopping this addiction?” The man is worthless in my eyes.

She seems to lack empathy as well, which is a shame. I've been expecting her to apologise for assisting Phil McGraw to get where he is and I'm thinking that I'll be waiting forever. 🙁

I haven’t had a tv in years, but I remember my mom watching his show years ago. She was a fan and I would watch the show with her. I found the show to be a strange form of entertainment. Recently I was at my sister’s house and Phil show was on. It appeared to be identical to the show I watched years previous. It reminded me of soap operas. You can watch them for years and they’re always the same story.

Was looking forward to this urgent relevant elaborative part II of the Doctor Phil analysis. It was rather good. I stored some open disdain for Doctor Phil, in my insight over the many years I followed him from close and afar, in my own dwellings of analysis that is. He's self-righteous, he got the crowd on his side all the time like his a god. He can't stand smart people who think more complicated or challenge his simplistic way of thinking at times. I only like the fact that his somehow strong believer in sticking together as a couple through thick and thin/fire and ice. It's obvious he does not care about people often, nor dig very deep at times. He loves to ridicule people operating on many facets, people who are sometimes given a downtrodden path in life is also an easy target. He will turn to his audience in the face of a confrontational disaster or being challenge too hard intellectually. I absolutely despise him making fun of people the way he does. Its quite concerning his such an authority that other authorities sit like lapdogs in his studio to be on his show. Good point about his top scientist Jack Trimarco. They all go there in order to boost their own business and audiences. His high on commercials for people and doubt his thoroughly reading or writing many of the simple books his putting out. I like your first video on this where you state there is no good reason for a client ever to appear on a doctor Phil show. My deceased father would love your type of content. He really would. He was a leading expert in stress and work-environment herein Scandinavia. He also had a large also has a portion of endless curiosity for many aspects of the health clinician environment and society over-all. He loved humble, yet, smart people like you. He liked people who could give the other side of the story. He was not as good in English as he wished though. He was born in 1942 on a farm here in Denmark. So English was not taught very well then. My English is better in person than writing perhaps. I admire your channel for its content a lot. It's very profound. We need more people like you in this world. My Russian linguist wife is a great admirer also:) You are a good fact-checker because you challenge this reality in front of our very eyes. Very stimulating for my thoughts. Regards from a Viking man up North.

I actually met Mr. Mcgraw He stopped for gas at the gas station I was working at. His car would not start. As we were pushing his car out of the way. We put a small line of pain in my car. He gave me a little note pat and said about the event if the insurance needed anything. He was able to start. Then he headed west towards the sunset

one thing that really bothers me is when he tells parents of spoiled kids that" I don't ask myself why they act out, I ask " why not"! giving not much scolding to the kids like the parents are always 100% wrong .. what are your thoughts dr

Oh, Yay! That's why I quit watching him years ago! Not being a therapist I couldn't put my finger on why I didn't like this man. I could only think he was detestable. I see now that my decision to wipe him off my T.V. screen should still stand. Thanks for clarifying it.

Isn't the term for that "Celebrity by Association." I've seen the vid where Robin packs her hubby's lunch and gym bag. I'm confused frankly, is that devotion or one hand washes your mother? Let's set the role of Women back a couple of decades Robin!! Is that the pact you made on the day you said "I'll do and do and do it some more." I get it, he ain't much to look at but he's got what really counts. A huge bank account!
