You see, people always think gentle parenting means letting your kids do whatever they want. What it really means is setting boundaries with your kids clearly and with compassion, not screaming or hitting. Kids are still learning to regulate their feelings and understanding why things are the way they are. All screaming and hitting does is instill fear into your child and that just breeds an anxious, frustrated kid who doesn’t trust their guardian. It’s not easy considering the fact that you as the adult have to learn emotional regulation first, but it’s worth it.

The problem is that there are many people out there who say they do gentle parenting and are not setting any boundaries.

@sophieschonfeld2943 Very true. Too many parents don't take the time to teach their kids saying 'it is faster to do it myself' That doesn't do a child any favors.

@@sophieschonfeld2943 well, thats like with every other thing. People are telling they are teaching good Christian lifestyle while doing the most unholy things to their kids or themselves. Or say they eat a healthy diet while eating a ton of meat and sugar. While the definitions that people have of certain things may vary, that still doesn't make the thing itself less valid just because some individuals mess up.

The difference between you and most parents at the moment is that you get involved. I see parents sitting on the couch, with their phone in their hands telling (yelling) the children to do things. You do it TOGETHER! ❤❤❤

I love the examples this mother is putting out there. She is proof that you can be direct with a child and not be angry. You can also speak softly while not sugar coating it. It also goes to show just how much it helps your entire family dynamic when you treat children as human beings, capable of more understanding than you may think they have. It’s so evident that the bonds of these family members run so deep and are 100% sincere. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!

Why not buy him some kid size brooms? They even have small vacuum cleaners, mops & sweepers. Make him his own "clean up kit". Use non-toxic sprays in smaller spray bottles. Boys especially love those for some reason. Cut a roll of paper towels in half. He's the perfect height to clean off the fronts of lower cabinets & bath tubs. And his little brother is old enough to help with putting shoes & coats away. Make it a game with a ticking timer & challenge them to "beat the clock". There's even really cool step stools so kids can help with dishes safely.

It’s the threat of number three and the followup that made him reset himself. Little guy was cleaning the way I feel some days. Lol. Flop flop! Key is to make it more positive once he’s getting the groove of it. Maybe get him a small broom and dustpan to help and his own little container of spray and a microfiber cloth cut down to his hand size. In montessori they make cleaning part of their play and have tools and utensils to help make the jobs more easy and part of play. Good luck with him learning self regulation. He is learning with your 1,2,3 so clearly your time outs have made impact.

Growing up in a Mexican household, it’s so conflicting to watch this for me because if my mom would’ve parented this way, our community will label it as “her not having authority” etc. It’s really nice to see that I don’t have to stick to what my culture tells me to do with my kids and that it’s okay to teach kids how to regulate their emotions rather than “hitting them with a chancla”

There's all heavily edited. We see what she wants us to see. We never see the tantrums or how she actually deals with them. We only see the aftermath of the "tantrum". I watched one where the baby was on time out sitting on the bottom step of the stairs. If was edited so heavily I wondered how long the child sat there. Of if against her rules he kept getting up and was put back down again.

@IsaDCTV I would think of 2 scenarios. The first the kid feels that his mom is also in emotional distress. We never really like this kind of situation. The other case can be that the kid wants to help his mom deliver the consequences, the 3rd option which will be in the rare cases, the kid is a sociopath and manipulate his way into being his mom favorite but that is so so rare.

It can be so very hard to make ourselves do what we need to do sometimes! It was especially touching to see how his feelings came out in his body language ~ his limp arms when you hugged him at the beginning, his suffering when picking things up off the floor, his facial expressions... such a wonderful example of learning to practice fortitude and self-control and experiencing their rewards! It was beautiful to witness the way you came alongside to guide him throughout, and that he was allowed to have his feelings without being reprimanded. The only thing a bit missing for me (and it could have occurred often and earlier) was expression of empathy. Are you familiar with the acronym ACT? It stands for Acknowledge the feeling, Communicate the limit (which you did so well!) and Target the alternatives (providing choice, which children need as much as grown-ups). Acknowledgment of his feelings at the beginning would've softened the start of the video. Sprinkling it throughout the chore completing process would have amplified connection and feelings of support and understanding. Overall, such a great example of positive parenting!! Your concrete examples will surely encourage and help so many ~ thank you!!!

You are so welcome! There is also CAT, when speed is of the essence, such as in a dangerous situation ~ simply switch the order of A and C. I was taught that two of the most helpful feeling reflections are simply "It's hard" and "It hurts" ~ useful in a multitude of situations. You can see that I utilized one of them at the beginning of my first comment :)

Its not emotional regulation training if you tell him to stop your feelings otherwise you are in timeout. This is getting rid of annoying feelings by punishment... nothing to do with guiding children through their unpleasant feelings. She doesn't yell, but otherwise she doesn't help him at all. Thank you. This helps. I don't always know how to handle my daughter's tantrums and I always feel ashamed to ask, so it's nice to be able to see someone actually doing the response for me to see. Idk if it's cause I have Asperger's or if it's a normal thing, but I don't just _know_ how to parent/mother sometimes and it's frustrating. Probably also doesn't help that I didn't have a good mom or stepmom growing up, both were abusive, one physically the other mentally. 🙄 I've tried spanking, but I really don't like spanking them. I've recently settled for explaining before and after spankings so that I'm not just confusing them with unexplained punishment, but if I can avoid spankings I would much prefer that.

Thank you for sharing this. I know it's not necessarily easy to admit these things ❤️. I completely understand where you are coming from. I read one time that some chores are age-appropriate and some are not..for example in his age chores should be like..putting his toys back in the box, making his bed, helping with the table setting but stuff like cleaning should be untill he is 10 and up

You’re a wonderful mother! I specialize in gentle parenting, which emphasizes the importance of allowing space for a child's emotions. Sometimes it seems like you might be suppressing those emotions, and that can be unsettling for the kids. Loving parenting is definitely about providing a nurturing framework, but it’s also crucial to validate their feelings. Additionally, avoiding time-outs is important, as they can make children feel abandoned during tough moments. A child's nervous system thrives with a calm and loving parent, as this helps them co-regulate their emotions. We should recognize the difference between gentle parenting and a more rigid approach. Keep up the great work; your love is evident!
