Hi Michael, just wanted to share with you that I gave my exam last month after watching almost all your videos. I got a pretty great score for myself(110, 27R 28L 27S 28W). All thanks to you and many other youtube videos. To anyone watching the videos, I'll just say for speaking part focus on the sustained speech and you're almost halfway there, no need for fancy words or anything. Hi Michael, thank you in advance for your kindness. The topic is Colonizing Asteroids. The article and the lecture are both about colonizing asteroids. There are three possible merits which are brought by the article: for scientific potentials, possible economic growth and long-term survival for humanity. However, the professor challenges those ideas. First of all, the article mentions that due to its special environment like small size, low gravity and thin atmosphere, research on it could have an impact on many fields of technology. While the professor says that it’s unlikely to happen because we simply don’t know much about the asteroids. Due to lack of knowledge, we don’t understand how many asteroids are there and what are their conditions. It will be possible only if we have more understanding about them. Moreover, the article brings out the idea that colonizing asteroids will be helpful for boosting the economy. Because there are many rare natural resources on the asteroids, if we can manage a way to collect them, it will not only create new industries but also improve the job markets by releasing more jobs. However, the professor challenges the idea that we can’t predict the precise amount of mines in every asteroids. Because we don’t know the number of the resources we could mine, we can’t estimate that it is worth transporting it back to Earth. Perhaps we could cost less in the traditional way to collect them on Earth. Finally, the article suggests that it could be a solution for humanity’s long-term survival. It could serve as a shelter when something bad happened to Earth. The professor opposes that it will not be suitable for humanity to live because it’s too small and don’t have enough mass to create livable gravity for us. If we really consider colonizing asteroids, the settlements must be designed and built to cope with the gravity. Also, it might be harmful for us to live in such a low gravity environment.

Your details are pretty good here, but the skeleton of your essay is weak and awkward. Consider using my template for this task: www.toeflresources.com/writing-section/toefl-writing-templates/ Otherwise, your grammar is pretty good. There are some errors here, but nothing too significant. I think this essay would score about 24 points. Nice work.

Hi Michael, can you pls tell me how the writing scoring works? How do they convert the raw score(1-5) into scaled score(1-30)? Is there any formula?

The score is converted using regular math. There is no great secret. Just remember that your essay is scored by both a human and the AI.

There is no secret to it, really. It is just regular math. Like: (9/10) * 30 = your score
