Peter's was rather terrible as Rose. It doesn't matter what the real Rose looked like ( i.e. smaller build and more feminine) the score is a mack truck vulgar pushy fish wife type. Merman was definitive. Lansbury was weirdly effective if just as miscast. Welcome to the star syatem . It becomes blind frankly.

According to June Havoc, Bernadette was the most like the real Mamma Rose out of all the actresses to play her. The real Rose was petite and a man trap, not the armored tank of a woman portrayed by Merman, Daly, LuPone, etc. Arthur Laurents also said the entire reason they did this revival was to cast someone as Rose who more accurately portrayed her as she actually existed.

@@gabrieltaylor2589 Perhaps, but Rose Havoc didn't have to sing that Jule Styne score or Arthur Laurent's interpretation of her. It's artistic license. Laurents may have said that at the time (whilst in a feud with LuPone) but he mounted the LuPone Gypsy specifically to banish memories of a production he was famously scathing of.

If you read Arthur’s book, “Mainly on Directing” his issue was with Sam Mendes and the technical aspects of the production. He never had any issues with Bernadette or her performance and praised her. So his mounting of the LuPone version was based on his feud with Sam. Even The NY Times review stated Bernadette was the only actress to ever break the Merman blueprint and do a totally unique interpretation which let’s be honest is the entire point of a revival. Doing it the same way over and over again with people copying Ethel Merman’s performance is reductive.
