I’m getting my miniature dachshund in about 4 weeks. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for me. I live in Ontario, Canada - it is very cold, snowy, icy, etc. Because the snow is sometimes 3-4 feet deep - we would obviously shove as much as we can - but not grass for a puppy to go on.....I have purchased a grass tray which I’m hoping to try....but just wondering if you have any other suggestions. Also I want to bell train her - have you used the bell training on any of your dogs?

Yes, our Harold (mini long haired) is crate trained, bc of quarantine-my mom is 90, I’m 60+ and disabled-so it’s hard to get him out as often as we should in good weather, but when it’s wicked cold like today, he’s stir crazy and destructive. He’s a sweet little fella, it’s not his fault. He’s pooping outside at least once a day, but without the pandemic, he’d have been socialized, potty trained, and have the run of the house by now. Frustrating! We’ll get through it, but it’s tough, especially on a freezing day like this.

My 1.5 year old won’t potty outside at all I’ve kept her out all day and she will just hold it and as soon as we are back inside she will get in her kennel and pee and poop. She gives the signal I take her out for 30 minutes or more and she won’t potty but as soon as she gets back in she uses her kennel as a potty. Even at night when she’s sleeping in it she will just use it as a toilet and roll around in it like it doesn’t even phase her.

Hi Lenny, we took Katie (2) and Darcy (11 months) away overnight for the first time. "Business" was not taken care of! We travelled from Kent (*left home at 9.30am) to Southampton, stopped at a services for them, no "business". We went to visit my dad in a nursing home, they eventually did wees (this was approx 2.30pm). Drove to an AirB&B (approx 4.30pm) which was meant to be dog friendly, but there was no grass for guests. We were told to cross the lane and go into some woods which we did but the girls were so excited by new sights, sounds and smells that there was no "business". 1/2 hour later Katie was doing her "business" dance, so I popped her lead on and took her back to the woods...nothing. Took her back to the cottage after 20 minutes, but she started doing her dance again. Lead on and back to the woods...nothing! We did this five or six times with no results. Katie attempted to do No2 in the cottage, but when we took her straight outside she refused again! Darcy was no better. Even after their tea they didn't want to. I tried taking them to a different spot, nothing. Finally at 11.30pm Katie did a wee but Darcy refused to comply. Katie cried into the early hours until my husband gave up and slept downstairs with them, and in the morning they still wouldn't do outside business! Darcy did decide the grey rug in the living room looked a bit like grass and did a HUGE puddle. Katie held it until we got home at 10.30am!! What did we do? We really want to take them on holidays with us but they just hate any change to their routine (or surroundings it now seems) :'( Do you have any thoughts?

Also, a tip I have; remove rugs. I have found that deep pile rugs are the only thing which seem to attract my Twiglet to wee, and he has had very few accidents indoors. He's only ever chosen to pee on a rug in the house - and it was a long pile rug, like grass.

I am a Dachshund lover myself. My dachshund passed away 10 months ago. Almost made it to 14. Was a special needs dog because he had an autoimmune disease. I was so devastated. Big believer in shelter and rescue animals. Almost a month ago I found a longhair dachshund female-10 yrs old. I prefer older dogs too. I am also a senior. Felt like God sent her to me. Anyway, Dog Pads don't work. Didn't on my 1st dachshund and doesn't on my shelter dog. My dog had been subjected to neglect and trauma. After a month, she has really returning to what she once was. I have to use my cue skills. She won't poop in the house, but she does pee. I have to follow her cues and it is working, She only pees in the house when she is stressed and she does have separation anxiety if I go to the store. She is really bonded to me. I am retired and I have been able to spend a lot of quality time with her. She is playful and barks now. She won't go outside unless I go. I don't stand over her when she has to do her business. Real challenges sometime, but so worth it. 🐕

Hi Lenny, I would like to ask further about this as I live in a small apartment with no backyard but we do have a decent size balcony. I just had a 10.5 weeks old mini dachshund. Literally had him for two days. I tried to set 1-2 hours intervals for him to go pee and every time he wakes up from a sleep. I’ve had some successes but mostly failures. He keeps going around the balcony and pee but not on the pee pad. I’ve noticed that my first mistake from your video is using poo pad because I am still waiting for my fake grass to come. Do you think this fake grass would help because I don’t want him to pee on other surfaces in the balcony? Also, today, just had an accident that he peed on his crate/bed. Any advice would really help as I’m going crazy and not sure what I did wrong other than the pee pad. Thanks very much.

For everyone who is buying dogs from breeders, plz plz plz look for dachshund rescue places first and pounds. Here’s some tips on rescuing a dog of a specific breed: a couple months after Christmas pounds have full breed dogs. Also check college or university towns pounds and Craig’s lists and Facebook marketplace. Students get lonely and get dogs that they can’t afford or don’t have time and patience to take care of. Also, post on Facebook marketplace that u are looking for a specific breed. Check military towns too. Sometimes people just don’t want the hassle of moving with animals. Saving a dog is better than buying one!

Hi, I am an experienced large breed dog owner, and use to train dogs in the army also . We have just lost our dogue de bordeaux, and we now have 2 young children so thought we would try a small dog next, and decided on a miniature dachshund, can you confirm they are good family dogs and that they give some level off watch dog activity ? Also I whilst researching I have read a few times they can be hard to house train, hence I am working my way through your videos, which I find really informative and interesting 👍
@lennysixdachshunds10692 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan! I praise you for researching :) They are good family dogs if the children are trained well, dachshund require a slightly different approach to training. A lot of training dachshunds is managing their anxieties and if something is making them unhappy listening to them. They usually love their family but they can be sensitive to children being high energy and in their face so as long as the children are trained to spot the cues and leave them alone then absolutely! They are naturally reactive and noisy so they are great dogs if you’re looking for a dog that’ll tell you when someone arrives to your house, but not so great if you don’t like barking. Dogue De Bordeaux with an experienced hand are very obedient and love to please. Dachshunds are stubborn and don’t take well to tough love well. A soft approach with routine, structure and understanding snd they’re fiercely loyal ❤️

I have 3 six month old puppies. Now I’ve worked with dogs for 16 years and I’ve housebroken many of them in fact all of them, but this is challenging. I also have three cats. So a lot of times when I think they’re sniffing to go potty they’re just sniffing where the cats have been and if I catch them actually sniffing to go potty and I put them outside they just look at me like I’m an idiot and run back in the house and go play. If I catch one I’m not going to catch the other two. I was really hoping once I had cut them back to two meals a day they would have a better pooping schedule. Nope. And sometimes it’s hard to tell if they are squatting to poop or if they are just standing there because of their short little legs. They don’t even understand it when I make a big deal when they poop outside. They just keep looking at me like the crazy lady. So I’m just trying to train them to go into the one spot and I am using reusable puppy pads. One on the floor and one scrunched up on top of it for when they lift their leg

Hi Lenny, I’m a new mini dachshund mummy and to be honest a little confused with all the different toilet training advice. Opie has just gone 8 weeks old last week when we brought him home. We do have puppy pads down in the front room but keen to take them up as you’ve said. We’ve made our small yard into puppy proof today as he was climbing over things, think I read somewhere to not have interaction with them whilst outside, is that right so wanted to eliminate the constant picking up and moving home away from things. We can be stood outside for ages knocking up to what feels like an hour (will actually time the next time we go out) He’s wee’d and poo’d on some occasions but other times just wont entertain it, he will whine and shiver I fall soft and let him back in but as soon as we let him back in he’ll pee on the floor. I know it’s all about perseverance, but is there any other advice that will help us. Do you recommend the door bells?
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
Hey Jo! I think the important part here is following a routine and not allowing him the space to go in front if you. I’m not sure if you’re following all of my video. But in order to really conquer it, it’s about spotting the cues and tidying up any wees or poops straight away with a cleaner than 100% eliminates the smell. If you spot the cues and pop them out the timing should we spot on for them needing to go so they will do it. And if you limit their space inside you 1. Won’t miss the cues 2. They will start to associate what is their living space and what is their toilet space. As naturally they do not want to toilet in their living space. In order to really get to the bottom of it ideally you need to follow every part of my step by step. Because every time they go indoors they’re undoing their learning. So you need to provide as little chance as possible. After food, after drinks, after play, after sleep. All of these times mean go outside 😎💜

I’m getting my doxie puppy in 2 days, but my last one did this as well! I’m learning as much as I can now so I can start him off right. My last one could be outside for HOURS! I would wait & wait. I would think, ok., no way she has to go. Then soon as we got inside 🤦♀️

Its good advice but I need to use puppy pads. My baby is not allowed to be on the floor because although we disinfected, there might be parvo on the floor. The only time she is on the floor is with a puppy mat and on top of that a pad in a restricted pen. So now I feel I'm doing something wrong because she said not to use them. I cannot take her outside either because out building has way too many dogs and its known to be around in my state. So what do I DO
@lennysixdachshunds10692 жыл бұрын
Why would you have parvo on your floor if thoroughly cleaned? X
@enyamorales45112 жыл бұрын
I don’t want to run the risk. I am just one to not trust everything I see online. I bought a parvo cleaner and bleach but not 100% sure it works to kill parvo. If that makes sense.

Haha - my chosen words were "quick-quick!!" with my old dog. This didn't conflict with any other command that I used & I felt this was 'socially acceptable'. I agree in devoting proper time & energy into house-training as it's such an important thing. It's an investment for the rest of your dog's life & your comfort of your own too!! Thanks for addressing this problem, I agree putting in the commitment to stand outside in all weathers does bring rewards!! ☔️ 🌦 🌤 ☀️ 🌈 🏆 💕 How do you feel about once the dog is fully house-trained providing a flap for them to come & go into the garden as they please? I ask because we have cats & therefore a flap for them...

I had a mini for 14 years. She was trained to go on pads and I absolutely loved it. Used them her entire life. I liked that they were easy to just throw away; no poo in the yard to pick up and no dead grass from urine burn. I never had to get up in the middle of the night to take her out and it was especially great when I was in a hotel. She would just go on the pad in the room and I'd toss it. Lenny, I was thinking of making a wooden box that has low edges and using some leftover single piece of vinyl flooring, then adding dirt & planting grass on top and using it as the virtual equivalent of a natural "cat litter" type of puppy toilet. Then, gradually move it through the sliding glass door ultimately ending with the box outside and then removing it entirely. This would not be a substitute for potty training, but a supplement to it. Your thoughts?

Do your dachshunds go outside just fine in the snow and rain? We live in Kansas and it is that time of year where it is either snowing or raining. He's a puppy and he seems to pee fine in the snow if it isn't too high up on him. He's had a problem with the other in the snow. We haven't even tried rain yet. We've been bad and kept the puppy pad.

I really like your videos. I have a question I have had a rather difficult time toilet training my 6 year old. Whenever I leave the house my dachshund will usually leave me a treat. Even if I have just taken her out. How do I stop this? When my husband lets her out(and stands there same as I do) she won’t do anything, however once back in the house she will immediately come and get me to take her out? Weather I have to open the door same door as I always do and she has to approve of the weather. If she does not like it she will refuse to go outside? Got any suggestions?
@lennysixdachshunds10692 жыл бұрын
Have you husband told her off for going indoors before? If so she will not want to do it in front of him. Lack of trust and safety + an association with him disliking her going. She might be going toilet while you’re out because she’s a bit anxious. Anxiety really gets their toileting going. Also do you go out with her in bad weather? And close the door behind you, and keep taking her back to her spot?

Same for us. We could not get her out until after all vaccinations, that was 15 weeks. She was doing well on potty pad with few accidents. But she was confused about doing outside. We said potty every time, we took her out. Soon she got it, but often she would not empty completely. As soon as we got home, she would go very quickly on the pad or on the wood floor. At 9 weeks to 18 weeks, they need to go about 2 to 3 times to completely empty themselves. After 20 to 22 weeks they know, she knows I like her to go out, so she does that. It helps by giving treats for about 4 to 5 weeks, when they go out. They learn fairly quickly as they want you to be pleased. She goes and looks at me to see if I am pleased.

Hi, this is all super great and wondered if you had any advice for me. I’ve got my 2nd puppy she’s now 14 weeks and I can’t get her to pee outside. We live in a flat and have no grass next to us as background. We are doing everything you are saying other than having the puppy pads. It is super cold outside right now so I wonder if it’s the cold? Is there anything else you could suggest. My first is perfect 99% of the time
@lennysixdachshunds10692 жыл бұрын
Ditching the puppy pads is a huge part of making it work. If you have puppy pads the rest won’t work. If you must allow her to toilet indoors. Turn your bathroom into a fake garden. Get a patch of fake grass in a tray and make a point of take get to that every time she shows signs of needing to or every 30-60 mins. Following the exact same technique aka going to the bathroom with her, closing the door behind you etc. But exchanging the garden for your bathroom. Remove the pads because they are completely undoing any correct toileting and extremely confusing x

Could you get someone to help you for those 3 hours? As 8 week is very young to leave them alone... then build it up over time? If not then what I would do, is set up a pen area around the crate and leave the crate open so they can choose to find comfort in the crate or be in a slightly bigger area xx

Set up a separate pen area or room that has either hard flooring or some sort of tarpaulin down and pop a tray with faux grass in there so almost making a tiny garden in your house. That way when the pup is old enough to go outside it’ll be used to asking to go 💜

Lenny in your opinion do you think adopting 2 minis at the same time from same litter (siblings) do they train better because they have that comfort of being with their litter mate?
@lennysixdachshunds10693 жыл бұрын
No they are prone to something called ‘littermate syndrome’ so a very bad idea to get two. It’s not twice the work it’s three times the work as they also unlearn all behaviours and training from each other.

@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
Hey! Ideally for a house trained dog you would have a outdoor safe space for them to go from day one. If you must train them in an apartment you will want either a faux grass area on your balcony or if no balcony then set up a pen area with faux grass / pads down. That way you can pretend they’re being let into a garden to wee. So when they can go outside on walks they understand they must ask to go x

I keep her in a cage when I'm at work. When home I walk her and she'll go outside but not consistently either. Should I get rid of the matt but them how will I take her out when it's justbtoo cold. She poops inside more than anything and once or twice in the matt but mostly on the carpet. My carpet is ruined and old. I'm going to have to pull it up snd put flooring down when I get the money to. This is the hardest dog ever to train and never has it been more than a year. I'm exhausted and don't know what to do. Should I hire a trainer get rid of matt? Idk. Please help.

If you don’t have a garden some dog really struggle with finding the right place. I think you said on another comment you only have concrete area. Get a long line lead and put a bit of faux or a square of grass outside on the concrete. Most puppies won’t go on lead or concrete. So you need to create the feeling of an off lead grass garden x

@lennysixdachshunds10692 жыл бұрын
Oh bless him. He’s probably a bit too scared to go outside. So instead set up a faux grass area (like a little tray) in your bathroom and plop him on it every 30 mins and say ‘go wee wee’ ideally you would also baby gate that room or area so he has to begin to learn to ask to go in it :) so you step inside the bathroom close the gate behind you similar to if you had a small garden. He may feel safer going indoors at young age but at least will be learning the action of asking to go toilet so later in life you can migrate to outside.

A lot of basic common sense really. My phrase is go be a good girl. Something that does help with me when I leave is I kennel her. Not only to keep her from going to the bathroom but she likes to get into everything and tear things up. She is almost 6 months now and completely trained. When I'm getting ready to leave she always wants to go and runs and gets in her carrier. Mostly she does get to go, but when she can't I have to coxe her out and to go to her kennel.

one thing not many people know is, long hair dachshunds are notoriously difficult to train. And I dont mean that lightly. I'll rephrase, they are almost IMPOSSIBLE to potty train. Especially if you have more than one. Short hair, are smart and easy to house train. Huge difference between the two which comes down to the breed they were originally bred with.
@lennysixdachshunds10693 жыл бұрын
That’s not true at all, I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences but I have long and smooth dachshunds and they’re all house trained additionally my long hairs are 1000 times easier and less the ignorant. Long hairs were bred with spaniels to get the hair so have their working dog smarts, this is a commonly known fact.
