Great job. I just watched the official Toja Grid video that skips the back-and-forth process getting the thing up. If you're building in a corner (like I was with my first) it can be really tricky to tip it back and forth enough to get the legs in. Splitting it into two stages is definitely the way to go (I didn't, my first time. Lesson learned for this month's second one...).

Thanks for the comment and sorry for the delayed response. I completely agree with you - it must've been tough in a corner. Hope the 2nd build went well!

I assume the big posts are 4x4s, and the cross rafters are 2x4s? Then the smaller ones, I'm not sure of and would like to know. They look really nice and I've not seen them used in any other Toja grid applications. Nice innovation!

You’re correct on the sizes. The slats on the top are 1x2 pieces. My wife found the idea on a blog and we totally copied it 🤣 Thanks for the comment!

Hi, just a question, after couple years, did you wish you went with the 6x6 kit or did the 4x4 hold up real well over the few years? Thanks in advance
@forksandrec

we just got our Toja 4x4 kit, where did you get your lumber?
@forksandrec
@forksandrec 3 жыл бұрын
We got our lumber at Home Depot, but but not all at once. We would look for the best looking lumber, and if there were only a couple, we'd buy them. We'd check different stores in the local area and just get as much as we can until we had enough.

Nice video, thank you for sharing. What is the overall size for the pergola (outside). I am trying to square the concrete piles ...I assume the wood here is not touching so it will be 11'' added (using 6x6). My 6 6x6 posts will also be bearing the deck since i don't have a concrete slab and a slopped backyard. Many thanks

Looks fantastic! Question? Where did you get the 2 x 4 joist hangers? The one's Toja offers are screwed in top of the 4 x 4 with only one mounting hole. Then side holes for the 2 x 4 has 2 on both sides. We live in snow country so that one top mounting hole on the bracket is concerning for snow accumulation. We prefer the brackets that you used but Toja doesn't have them on their website hence our question. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Again your pergola looks great and wishing you & your family 👪 many happy memories.

Great video. It’s gonna be very helpful. We are about to start our project. What wood did you use. We found rough red cedar in a local store but I am wondering if I should sand it. It full of splinters.
@forksandrec
@forksandrec 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! We used redwood. It was smooth, but I did a quick sanding to make it smoother. I'd imagine you would probably want to sand your rough cedar too. I'd also recommend bringing one of the footings just to make sure it fits nicely.

What is included in the kit? The post too or just the black steel brackets?

Greta video and it looks great. I just bout the double pergola. It recommends rafters every 12” but i don’t feel like buying (expensive) that many. I like the how you put the wood on top of the rafters. What size is that wood?
@forksandrec
@forksandrec 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! For the rafters, we also didn't want to put too many because we knew we wanted slats at the top. We felt like 2 rafters each would look nice. The size of the slats were 1"x2"

Do these Toja Grid kits come with the actual wooden posts included or do you have to buy those separately? Also, do you fasten the wooden legs to the ground with nails or is everything just simply weighted down naturally? Thanks.

Thanks for the comment and sorry for the late response. When I first put it up, it seemed a bit shaky. Then I fastened the brackets to the wood and also the concrete footings and it felt much better. I live in a windy area so sometimes it sways, but not too much. I would be concerned if I added a shade, though.

Since it's 4x4, it will move when I push it. It might move slightly when it's super windy, but it doesn't feel unsafe or anything.

I'm still in the research process. Going with 4x6 or 6x6 is a better long-term solution for stability, as well as twisting or warping wood.
@davidz1681

Too high to provide shade and the top runners need to be thicker. I'm betting the runners are sagging by now. Decorative but not functional.
