I love japan, I love tokyo, hakone, osaka, kyoto, nara, hiroshima, takayama, kanazawa, shirakawa and miyajima. in september we'll come back to see it for the second time. tsv best japanese video! BEST!

Just dumping on the temple shops. Honestly it's probably had shops forever. Judging by what I can find on google, shopping arcades have existed there since at least 1910 and likely earlier.

I think you might be misunderstanding. Those "cheap souvernir shops" have been there since always. I think that has been the purpose of that street from the start. For tourists, since Edo times. Don't think mercantilism is a new thing

You missed the point... These stores have not always been there first of all, at leat not in this fashion. A temple approach is usually a sacred thing. Usually, these stores (at least in the past) were temporary and then well... But, the real point here is that the product sold there are some of the worst, cheesy kind cheapening the whole experience of visiting Asakusa.
