I went to see these 3D billboards in Tokyo last month. I have to say, they look more impressive on KZbin than they do in person. But what I did like about the one in Shinjuku (or maybe it was Shibuya) was that there was a billboard across the street that worked in conjunction with the 3D billboard, so at times you had little cartoon characters jumping between the two billboards. I thought that looked pretty cool.

That's the whole trick. It tricks your brain into thinking the edges of the screen are closer to the middle than they actually are, so when the cat goes past those fake "edges", it seems to be leaving the screen

It's a composite. The cat box room's outer edges are sharper than anything else meaning it doesn't exist in that scene, but is composited in.
