Editor's Note:
Editing the compilation makes me realize the depth of barber massages. While retaining the traditional form of barber massages, each shop has evolved its massage techniques uniquely. According to the barbers, the process begins with learning the style of the master or senior at the place of apprenticeship. As they perform the treatments, they experiment based on realizations like, "Ah, this is effective for the customer," or "There's a pressure point here," gradually establishing a style with originality. This is the essence of Shuhari (a concept of learning stages in martial arts). After setting up their own shop, the new staff who train there go through the same process again. Hearing these stories makes me feel that barber massages are a traditional art and an intangible cultural heritage built over a long history. Even those who have drifted away from barbershops lately might consider experiencing a barber's massage again, pondering over its eternal history.
