As a magic player that does not like commander, I am not mad that commander is the most popular format. I'm not even mad that its what wizards supports the most. I'm just mad that it is the ONLY thing that is accessible to new players. its so sad that magic had such enormous growth the past few years, but all of that went to commander, because wizards refuses to do good entry 60 card decks for their other formats. it just seems that doing a somewhat regular series of challenger decks would be so good for other formats is such a no brainer, that i can only assume its intentional that they don't. even if it was a cycle of every year they change what format they print challenger decks for (year1 standard, year 2 pionneer, year 3 modern) it would go a long way for just helping get new players into each of those formats...

@michaelh.14849 ай бұрын
Yeah how they manage it is what's horrible. Like Standard it's healthy when it's only 4 sets, after that it's unbalanced to the point you might as well play an eternal format. And just cost alone is a reason for why Commander is so accessible. Not even getting into how casual it can be because of the group setting. Like where I live people only play Modern and Commander. And Modern is just crazy expensive. Pioneer is fun, it's just you got to have people to play with. Standard, the challenger decks were pretty good it's just they would release them literally within 6 months before they rotate out. And that's really insane poor management. Like Pokemon I bought the Palkia VStar league battle deck back when it first came out, and it wasn't until this month when it had cards rotate out. And by this point there were already better upgrades and tech options. Even the Mew Vmax league battle deck that came out before has been in standard until this month, and that was released back in November 2022.

I learned how to play Magic with kitchen table 60 card decks, and it's how I believe every new player should learn the game... players being introduced to the game only in the context of 100 card singleton is bizarre to me. since deckbuilding with only copies of basic lands and 4 players at a table is a more complicated way to be thrown into learning an already highly complex game, AND, it is simply not the fundamental nature of TCGs. Commander as the default beginner format to Magic is not how Richard Garfield played and, perhaps, never intended. And I say this as an avid fan of singleton formats, including commander

I always (read: for the past couple years, never thought of this before then) thought that what Wizards ought to do was pair Challenger Decks with Secret Lairs. Release, say, a Pioneer Amalia Combo deck at a reasonable rate with a cut-rate mana base and, say, Duress as the discard spell, and then do Secret Lair: Amalia Upgrade with 1x Thoughtseize, 1x Mana Confluence, 1x Temple Garden, and 1x Godless Shrine in the SL drop shortly thereafter. Anyone who wants that immediate boost to their Amalia deck, they can grab a couple of the SLs, and that brings them a lot more in line with the standard deck build, but if they don't have the resources right away, the deck is still there for them to start from and build towards over time.

After that I bought some booster packs, did some trading, and upgraded it a little bit. Super easy to get into and really fun. If I want to get into standard today, what do I do? No amount of money thrown at Wizards will get me a standard-legal precon. @Xoulrath_9 ай бұрын
In order to really make it "playable" out of the box, without putting a huge dent in their much cared about "reprint equity," we'd probably be looking at $250 for a deck. To simply make a playable version sans mana base, they could probably come in at $100. But even then, anyone serious about tournament play would need to spend the money on a usable mana base. I don't think that you get into Modern for less than a few hundred short of genuine budget lists. Even Burn is like $200-$300 now.
@TheZeratulsan9 ай бұрын
@@Xoulrath_ I think with how the horizon sets artificially rotate the format that WotC absolutely could print $100 modern precons, but they'd have to look at decks that are already t2, or decks that would get upgraded by cards in the set. @Xoulrath_9 ай бұрын
@@TheZeratulsan oh I believe that they could absolutely do $100 Modern Challenger decks. But as I already mentioned, we'd be looking at them without much in the way of a mama base. Maybe you get a single Fetch and Shock, but the rest are budget options that would eventually get upgraded, and would be a great reason to crack MH3 packs for Fetches. For the Prime Time example that you use, a single Cultivation would be cool, then one would crack more MH3 packs to get more. Or more likely buy singles unless the person in question just really wants to crack the packs lol. But it does at least push sales of the new product in some way.
@danielolsen35149 ай бұрын
What you are saying is you would play the format if you could play the format for less. They can do that without event decks. They have tried pre-made decks. Competitive formats have less room for "functional" decks.

Honestly, my only thought on the transition from other format decks into just giving us commander decks comes simply from the fact that as a singleton format it means that they can keep card prices high and in demand. With other format decks they'd have to put in multiple of wanted cards, meaning a player only needs to buy a deck once to get a playset of cards that they can use. By switching to commander decks if you want that playset, you're either going to have to go to the secondary market where the price of your wanted card will likely be high or buy three more decks to get that playset. There's also the argument that commander decks mean they can give you a lot more chaff and still make the decks work but with other formats if you try and do that then the decks won't work, meaning again they have to put in actual wanted cards into those decks.

I think they could absolutely print Modern Event decks again, they'd just have to get a little creative with them. You could probably make a Mill deck worth about $100 on the secondary market in singles and sell it for $75 or whatever. A burn deck could certainly be made for a cheap price, since most of the cost comes from having Fetchlands or expensive sideboard cards. If they didn't want to do just Burn directly, they could make a RDW 8 Whack deck for cheap as well, and possibly even have some good dual lands in it. It isn't a matter of them being able to do it or not, its just that they won't bc the market doesn't really demand it and they're all about profits first it feels like.

Yea the old pioneer decks were pretty decent, so if anyone wanted to try those and upgrade them to modern spec that’s something. But to have a top tier modern deck you’re definitely shucking out some coin

i actually got that event deck back then and i dont regret that. i enjoyed (and still enjoy) modern since back then and i still kept the sword of feast and famine

Such a throwback video. That video actually made me buy a modern event deck from a far away LGS in our community since they're all sold out. I wasn't able to upgrade the deck or even play it in an FNM but heck I still think it was a good value back then.

Your recap of the current top 4 modern decks is basically why I dont play modern anymore. Super expensive...but not super fun to me anymore with the overpushed cards. I would have really liked modern challenger decks in 2014, but not even those could get me to play modern now
@kal24899 ай бұрын
There was a mono red event deck that was basically half of burn. It had like two goblin guides in it and you could buy two of them, smash them together and you'd basically have an almost built RDW list. I can't remember exactly what it was for though, it wasn't technically a modern event deck, it was a bit before the tokens one. I'm not talking about PDS:FL though.

Would it have been the Magic Online Deck Series: Boltslinger? That was MODO only but it has a playset of Goblin Guide and is the only time GG has ever been printed into a deck according to Scryfall

@@gatchwar9069 Found it, Mirrodin Besieged Event Deck - Into the Breach. While it was several cards different from the PT list, the only ones that were expensive were 2 more Goblin Guide and 3-4 Mox Opals

When I was 15, I played at my local store all the time and I earned "top-8 players" in a points system they had so I was invited to a player of the year tournament on a Sunday and the format was 3 rounds of standard, 3 rounds of modern, and 3 draft rounds and I never played modern so I bought this deck off the shelf and played it and didn't do bad! It was a very convenient way for me to easily enter the format in a hurry, loved this product. The included sleeves were so garbage though, I will always remember the jank sleeves that were included.

Just wanted to say that this format of looking back at older products through today's lens was really neat and I'd definitely enjoy seeing it done again. I know you dislike unscripted commentary but it's really fun to hear your thoughts presented this way. Not to mention it was entertaining seeing your reaction to price differences from 10 years ago. Fun fact, last year Marsh Flats's market price dipped below $10 for some months before climbing back up to where it is now!

Thanks to the shock and fetch reprints, I manage dot complete my collection of each fetch and shocks. Working on the trilands now. For commander, fetches and shocks are probably the least impactful part of the decks, but if you plan on playing commander for a while with multiple decks, I’d say they’re worth it. If I ever need extra copies, I’m going to just proxy them.

Past Prof's comment of "it's almost like getting a 30-40 dollar credit towards upgrading the deck" is exactly what I did at my LGS the same day I opened the deck. To the point where I had to double-take when I saw the Sword because I had forgotten about it! I think I wound up getting something like Stoney Silence and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar instead? Either way, I only played the BW tokens deck for a few months while building up other decks.
@joshua_lee7329 ай бұрын
Elspeth knight errant was the best planeswalker option for bw tokens back when the event deck came out. It wasnt until Sorin Solemn Visitor was printed that she was dropped. You basically had to play her because there was no cnsistent token generator since at the time bitterblossom was still banned. Also BW tokens does have a Pro Tour top 8 to its name. I have so much nostalgia as the event deck was my introduction to modern and I jammed BW tokens from the day I bought it up until pre MH2 when I finally sold out of magic.

I have been playing mainly Commander for the last few years and only played modern at home with one other person but the decks we made were nothing compared to what these guys bring to modern night at the shop. I hadn't idea what I was trying to get into. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how can make a deck that wins in 4 or 5 turns. And that's not even as fast as a deck can be! Haha. I dunno if I'm going to stick with the format or not. But I did get a start on my tron deck and got all my urza lands. See how long it takes me to get all the cards I NEED to make an effective deck. Until then it's all commander.
@Guest-sc8zv9 ай бұрын
On the comment for why there wasn't fetchlands because of price gouging I have to ask, why not just print more of the product if demand is so high? The scalping only happens because of a short print, WotC could just give the LGS more of the product if it's wanted just like its any other Standard box. The main thing coming to mind would be it'd be bad for WotC on not being able to capitalize on the secondary market since the valuable cards would be meaningfully reprinted then.

The event deck was also my entry point into Modern, a format I avoided because of the price because the price of the deck was $50 at one point and that was enough for me to try it against my legacy playing friend, who also decided to build a modern deck. He has a way larger cardpool and Magic budget, so he built Bloom Titan and proceeded to kick my butt every game. That didn't deter me and I eventually tried other budget decks and would very occasionally score a win. However, he decided that Modern was too limited a format for him and me too expensive, so we returned to only colliding when we were playing his power cubes. Anyway, I do think there is a way to built proper challenger decks for Modern and it's in a similar vein as the original event deck: Pick tier 2 decks that lie in the budget range. I'd be happy to grab some of those decks in challenger form and play those against other people who mostly play budget Modern as well. No, I'm not going to want to run into Bloom Titan or Tron too often, but if you create this kind of entry point where there are at least multiple decks around the same level, I'd be happy to jump in and brew on a budget or grab one of Saffron Olive's budget lists, build it, and try it out.

I think, assuming they want them to stay close to retail price without just blowing up the secondary market completely, they could release £80-100 challenger decks for CERTAIN archetypes which would include all of the actually important pieces besides things like the one ring or chalice of the void, and if they did the classic of nerfing the mana base by leaving out fetches in particular.. They could definitely do Tron, Burn, mill ect. might need to repring some expensive cards like urza's saga but I think thats fine, noone should be buying these cards with the expectation that format stapples will completely retain their value and never see more accessible reprints. the comander precons show they are willing to drop products wtih double or even tripple the sticker price in cards inside, which seems like a fair target for these decks. £200-300 decks sold for less than £100 with room to upgrade into expensive pieces

Chase mythics for Commander in Modern event decks, was clearly a harbinger of times to come then. Nonetheless, access to modern viable decks on the cheap would be so appreciated.
@thraxus66619 ай бұрын
Looking over yawgmoth specifically, I think they could easily make a budget yawg deck as an event deck. If it's released in a set where they're printing fetchlands anyway they could easily put 1-2 fetches in each deck as well. The weird thing is that a lot of the higher cost cards in modern are currently in standard as well, but I'm not sure how often that will be a thing

I think the way to do Modern precons would be to make super budget versions of tier 3 or lower decks like The Rack, which can be built on a fairly low budget (given you don't include the Urza's Sagas and use Davriel instead of Liliana). Or they could make up their own deck archetypes for Modern, maybe tied in with the themes of the set.

Oh wow I remember this deck! It came out right when I first started. My friends and I liked the idea Modern because there was this huge card pool, so we could fish fun jank out of bargain binders and play at the kitchen table, but still technically have a format legal deck (this was before commander was well known). And I actually had a tokens deck, but even as someone right in the target demo for this, $80 was just too much. For a broke college student just getting into the game.

Semi unrelated comment, but way back in the middle of the Tarkir block, I got into Magic and one of my favorite things to do was to buy those preconstructed Standard decks and upgrade them. When I took a break right before War of the Spark and came back after a hot minute, with the revenge of the return to Innistrad, I was disappointed to see that Standard wasn't really a thing, and that they didn't really do precons anymore, outside of Commander.

This event deck was my first modern deck, and I was excited to put my copy of Brimaz in the deck to play at my lgs before switching to merfolk. Over the years I'd made swaps and upgrades but the core is still the same and I enjoy playing it with my friends still today.
