Twin might not be overpowered for modern but it certainly homogenizes things and leads to a frustrating playstyle of "I need a clock to pressure the Twin player but if I tap out, in comes Deceiver EoT and I lose." Not to mention imagine cards like 3feri/FoN, or Veil for Tarmotwin.

Splinter Twin just isn't fast enough to dominate Modern nowadays. It will certainly see some play but it doesn't hold up to the MH2 tribal decks which make up like 80% of the metagame.

If it weren't for the personalities playing, this would have been three of the worst games I've ever seen. It's not a magic game; it's two players playing two different games racing to see who gets there first. Thank god WotC isn't stupid enough to print cards like The Rack again, but they keep trying to help Mill become a thing.

The players, jokes/insults and pacing really did it for me here. As a returning player (unsure if this is the best time to return, lol) the card explanations and slower pace really helped me learn a lot compared to some other episodes. Thanks for the content as always :)

Love the episode! I play both 8Rack and Mill in Modern and was so happy to see this episode. Unfortunately the Prof probably should have lost game 2, both of you forgot to discard a card for Small Pox which would have allowed the double Raven's Crime next turn to force you to discard Tasha's Hideous Laughter but it allowed a third game so it was all good! :D

I think that April simply doesn't understand how good Leyline of the Void is, ESPECIALLY against discard. There are two possibilities: either it's in your opening hand, and so you get to start the game with it in play (this has never happened); or you draw it later in the game, and you have an easy choice to discard later since it's just a dead card. Super OP when you think about it.

So it takes away a card in your starting hand - exactly what you want to do when playing vs 8rack, right? It also hoses basically 1 card in the opponents deck, while also shutting down some of your cards that care about the number of cards in opponents graveyard. Sideboarding it in vs 8rack is almoast getting a handicap.
@Felixr2
@Felixr2 Жыл бұрын
By that logic, the best strat against discard is to only have unplayable cards in your deck so you never discard anything important. I think you just solved Magic.

As much as I love seeing the professor win games especially while laughing maniacally I did notice a mistake in your gameplay from 36:02 onwards that might have changed the outcome. When Spice played a Smallpox on his turn you both forgot to discard a card. That would have made it so the prof only had 2 cards in hand when Spice cast his Raven's Crimes twice the next turn and the prof would have had to discard his Tasha's Hideous Laughter. Kinda crucial discard to miss I'm afraid. I had to add the "Did you read the card?" 😄

Not showing what Prof discarded to smallpox seemed weird to me, but then Prof having 3 cards in hand on the following turn felt really weird to my mental maths, so I had to pause and make sure, but clearly he didn't discard to smallpox. 7 cards in opener + 2 draws by turn 3 (since he's on the play). 3 crabs (1 discarded, 1 sac'd), 3 lands (1 sac's), 1 card discarded to smallpox is a total of 7 cards accounted for, leaving 2 in hand, both of which get nabbed by Raven's crimes. I would just say honest mistake and move on, but that specific type of sequencing is part of what makes smallpox so good of a card. On the draw, assuming your opponent plays a creature on 1 and 2, smallpox on 2 means either your opponent is stuck on 1 land or they are left with 2 cards, meaning following it up with any discard 1 effect (if they play another card on 2 in addition to a land) leaves them hellbent or any discard 2 if they miss on the land or the nonland will do the same. Like, it's ultimately the crux of what makes smallpox decks good, and missing that is not just a simple misplay but is tantamount to "forgetting" to take any damage from an aggro deck on a key turn. Yeah, obviously if you just don't take 6 damage on turn 3 or whatever, that will give a huge advantage vs that aggro deck, kinda completely invalidating the strategy by way of misplaying.
