J.R.R Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories" is both a defence of, and a manifesto for, the fantasy genre. It was written and delivered as the Andrew Lang Lecture in 1939 and eventually appeared in print in 1947, while Tolkien was working on "The Lord of the Rings".
Here is a quick summary of the central ideas Tolkien's explores in this essay, including the purpose of fantasy, world-building and the concept of eucatastrophe.
