I generally thought this was okay, although I think you were a little dismissive of Buddha. And I think you are mistaken that, when someone puts on the ring, they become invisible to the good - remember the voice that called to Frodo when he wore the ring on Ammon Hen “take it off, take it off, take it off you fool“. Tolkien does not spell out whose voice this was - but it certainly comes from a point of goodness

I think it's implied to be Gandalf. As he says in book III, chapter V, "The White Rider": "The Ring has now passed beyond my help, or the help of any of the Company that set out from Rivendell. Very nearly it was revealed to the Enemy, but it escaped. I had some part in that..." When could the Ring have been "very nearly revealed to the Enemy" if not when Frodo was wearing it and sitting on Amon Hen?

LOTR Game Of Thrones Harry Potter All of These have pagan elements LOTR is just a christianization of pagan lore. Soldiers who fought to keep their city from the muslim turks around AD 1457 is a Christian story. As Saracens and the Ottoman Empire came to be in that part of the world.
@mstash5 Жыл бұрын
You are confusing pre-Christian mythology for witchcraft and sorcery, of which _The Lord of the Rings_ distances itself from. Also, Christ Himself delivered parables through *storytelling.* Furthermore, Christianisation of pagan lore is absolutely Catholic and was in fact done in the past. Again, though, Tolkien didn't delve into allegory.
@blsdanielmunster2449 Жыл бұрын
This is what happens when content providers care nothing for what Tolkien meant. Look at his introduction in the Fellowship of the Ring where he talks about how little regard he has for allegory.
@travcollier Жыл бұрын
Also what happen when people of whatever particular religion don't realize how much their mythology borrows / is inspired by other mythologies. Tolkien was keenly aware that he was creating a new mythology by mashing up elements and themes from lots of sources. He wasn't trying to just to represent a particular mythos in a different setting (like CS Lewis), but instead create something new out of somewhat familiar bits.
@daniels7907 Жыл бұрын
Yet he used it incessantly. To the extent that he doesn't seem to have even realized that he was doing so. Which is perhaps natural because, as noted in the discussion, Tolkien was heavily influenced by his religious beliefs (a fact which he himself freely acknowledged), which includes a scripture that makes heavy use of allegories and parables in such a matter-of-fact manner that many people erroneously believe that the entire Bible is meant to be taken literally. In actuality, much of it is of the "...and the moral of the story is..." The same is true of legendarium. Indeed, Gary Gygax, who invented Dungeons & Dragons, strongly disliked the Legendarium because it wasn't compatible with his mechanical view of fantasy. He was skimming past all the subtext and trying to reduce the whole thing to numbers and rules.

Tolkien missed an opportunity to preach the gospel by having this pitiful, hapless Gollum take the ring into the hell fire of Mount Doom. He should have had a sinless man voluntarily take the ring into the fire and then rise again on the third day. C. S. Lewis made that statement quite clearly in the death and resurrection of Aslan in order to redeem Prince Peter. Lewis got it right. Tolkioen blunderred.

This is a very bad take. Nothing in LOTR or Silmarillion symbolizes anything. If you read the Tolkien letters, he states very clearly that he does not write allegory, and he that he hates allegory. He says so multiple times, and anyone familiar with Tolkien will know this. Tolkien was historically minded, not allegorical. If you respect him, you should stop misreading his work and his intentions. It is true that he was Catholic, and very devout. The Valar fill the function of saints, and for that matter there are also saints that people call on (like Earandel). Mandos is basically Purgatory. When humans die they go there for a while before they pass on to Heaven or Hell. When elves die they remain there and are corrected before they reincarnate. So there are some parallels, but there is no allegory. You should read the Tolkien letters before you try to do a video like this.

@@TerribleScroll Yea it is, but not because of allegory or any hidden meaning. Mandos functions as purgatory for the humans, and the Valar fill the function of higher saints.
