Without it, it would hit the other side of the track directly and not land onto the track in the first place. It would just slam into it.

Back in the 90s, my wife and I almost split up before ever getting married because we went to Six Flags, and they had some sort of park-wide electrical failure which caused brakes on rides to fail. Wifey was very unhappy and somehow I was to blame. At the time, there was a whole lot of confusion, and very little in the way of answers. Wasn't until we got home and started watching the news that we found out what had really been going on. Apparently, some folks actually got hurt pretty badly by rides when cars ran into other cars.
