Tom and Jerry: The Movie is a 1992 American animated musical comedy film based on the characters Tom and Jerry created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It was produced and directed by Phil Roman, with a screenplay written by Dennis Marks, who also scripted some episodes of the then-airing Tom & Jerry Kids television series. It features original songs written by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse and a score also composed by Mancini. The film stars the voices of Richard Kind, Dana Hill, Anndi McAfee, Tony Jay, Rip Taylor, Henry Gibson, Michael Bell, Ed Gilbert, David L. Lander, Howard Morris, and Charlotte Rae.

Yeah, they've gotten worse. It's really not Tom and Jerry; it's more like that Itchy and Scratchy cartoon where they just sit down and have tea. Funny enough, the studio that made this went on to do The Simpsons after Klasky Cuspo departed but before 20th Television Animation took over. It also doesn't help that it completely lacks any ghosts voiced by Master Shake.

No, it hasn’t. I watched it for the first time 3 years ago with my girlfriend at the time, and it pissed me off. And she was laughing at my rant. The problem with this movie is not only the fact that Tom & Jerry talk throughout the movie, but it feels less like a Tom & Jerry movie and more like a ripoff of The Rescuers. Sure Tom & Jerry spoke sometimes in the original cartoons, but it wasn’t every single cartoon. Say what you want about the recent movie, but that felt like a Tom & Jerry movie. But whenever the humans were on screen in that movie, it felt like a spin-off to Barbershop. (Probably because it’s the same director.) Even though the opening 5 minutes were good, this was still shit. And one more thing, welcome to the mindfuck.

The problem I see everyone has with the movie isn‘t that Tom and Jerry talked but rather that they talked THAT long. Tom and Jerry are shown in their old cartoons that they are indeed capable of talking but just chose not to because they understand eachother regardless. Having them talk with eachother the whole time kinda destroys what makes their dynamic so special.

To be fair, both Doug and Rob did comment on that when talking about the movie in Sibling Rivalry. Basically, just because Tom & Jerry talked a few times in the old cartoons (especially when said few times were for very specific reason) doesn't make them "talking characters" and that's like if they made a Mr. Bean movie where he talks all the time bacause he did that one speech in the first movie.

@@DarkOverlord96 ironically you would think that's why robyn is there. have a talking character while they stay silent that they are just willing to be more friendlier and cooperative because they are all strays looking for a home. maybe robyn commenting that despite fightning a lot, they do seem to appreciate each others company... something both tom & jerry obviously deny but the audience kinda sees that yeah to some degree deep down they consider themselves friends... friends that love to get physically violent with each other wth slapstick. or see each other as a friendly rival and show that at the end with,even when now both of them are considered pets of robyn's household, they will still fight to see who is the favorite one.

I remember this film as a kid, it was probably the most memorable yet obscure thing that came out from the 90's, an era that was practically dominated by Disney in terms of animation. Art is subjective but I want to stand by this: This film was NOT THAT BAD. It did the most with what was written on page and was other than that really enjoyable, I loved this film as a kid and I wish I still had the DVD now.

I feel like people are a tad too harsh on the Friends to the End song. Even when Tom and Jerry are singing it, it's not like they're just going "Ok, we're friends now!" It's more that they're just getting caught up in the melody. Tom is flicking Jerry around, Jerry is tripping Tom up, and they're both clearly trying to upstage each other. That's totally Tom and Jerry to me.

As much as I think having Tom and Jerry talk is a terrible idea, I will say that I actually think the voices they chose to give them aren't bad. I kinda like that Tom has a bit of a New Jersey accent (fun fact he's actually played by the same actor who would later play Bing Bong in Inside out) and I think Jerry strikes that balance of sounding young but not annoying. Maybe it's because I watched this film a lot as a kid but whenever I do think what Tom and Jerry would sound like if they do spoke, my mind goes to this film You can tell that the actors are trying their best with what there given, it just doesn't work because by making Tom and Jerry talk your taking a big part of why there so beloved. It be like making Crash Bandicoot or Gromit suddenly talk, your actually taking away a lot of the charm and personality away by making them speak

I mean, it’s just so insane and makes a lot of questionable choices that I couldn’t help but be amused by it. Anndi McAfee as Robin wasn't that bad. I have a soft spot for the 'Do I Miss You' song, and she went on to voice Phoebe on Hey Arnold! and the main Ashley girl on Recess. She's still doing voice over work on various TV commercials and she's become incredibly hot!

Am I the only one who feels like the chase scene in the animated “Pippi Longstocking” movie is pretty similar to the one here? More interesting is that both movies end with the little girl getting reunited with her lost single father, the flea has the same voice actor as Bloom (one of the burglars), and Aunt Figg is pretty much a more villainous and redhead version of Miss Prysselius.

I remember working at Film Roman (studio that animated this) DECADES later & I got a random call from Rip Taylor asking if he could get a copy of the song he sang in this film for some charity show he was doing. We had no way to help him (everything had long since been archived & we didn’t have the right to say he could sing his song anyway) but he was super cool & nice about it. My boss’ face though when I delivered the message was hysterical. “Who called? The confetti guy?!? WHY????”

It’s cool how you have come to appreciate this movie more for the people who grew up with it and it’s definitely a good product of the 90s even though it’s not and never will be my favorite Tom and Jerry project. My favorite Tom and Jerry movie will always be “The Magic Ring”. I can certainly respect why people have an attachment to this movie with it being the first one but I still don’t like it very much. I love your original review though! Great times with early NC! Glad your Miramax reviews are going so smoothly!

I actually like the music in this movie. I remembered I liked it as a kid so I listened recently and yeah, I still very much like it. The intro music especially is a lot of fun.

I have always loved Tom & Jerry from the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon shorts especially since I have a soft spot for T&J The Movie (1992) especially when the dynamic cat and mouse only talk 'one time only' also I do enjoy the songs and classic score by Henry Mancini.

Tbh, I feel like this movie was meant to be just about a little girl who tries to find her father and is accompanied by two talking animals. But the studio told them to make a Tom and Jerry movie, and they just made the two animal characters Tom and Jerry and slapped their names in the title. I feel like this could have been an average, decent family film if they'd just made it its own thing. But instead we get a compromise that ends up angering hardcore Tom and Jerry fans who were expecting more Tom and Jerry, AKA the TITLE CHARACTERS. Also, if you want a really GOOD Tom and Jerry movie, I recommend The Fast and The Furry. It's Tom and Jerry competing in a race. Enough said.

I actually saw this movie before seeing any other Tom and Jerry stuff and that feels about right. Like to a kid, it feels like a generic animated movie of kid accompanied by animals movie that I for some reason was really into at the time. The characters in question did not have to be Tom and Jerry cause my background non-existent knowledge of Tom and Jerry didn’t signal anything wrong with it.

It's crazy how I'm both incredibly nostalgic for this movie and Doug's original review of it. I loved this movie so much as a kid for some reason. It certainly isn't good on a technical level, but I have a huge soft spot for it. I will, however, defend the songs. They go so bizarrely hard and will stick in my brain forever. I think Mancini killed it despite how ridiculous the material was.

What really surprised me when it came to trivia about this movie, but according to a SpongeBob BingePants podcast, Mr. Lawrence, the voice of Plankton, before getting a gig on Rocko’s Modern Life, he used to work at Starz, back when it was called Film Roman, and wouldn’t you know it, the film that Film Roman was working on was Tom and Jerry The Movie. Yes, Mr. Lawrence WORKED on Tom and Jerry The Movie. Guess making a bad Tom & Jerry movie was another one of Plankton’s attempts to try to steal the Krabby Patty formula.

Unironically, this film is one of my guilty pleasures. There are a lot of good elements in it, from the spine-chilling vocal work of Tony Jay to many of the slapstick jokes to Henry Mancini's fantastic score, even some of the vocal songs are legit good. Money is Such a Beautiful Word is almost a Schrödinger's Musical Song. It's pretty poor in terms of many of the lyrics and the odd rhythm it uses, but it's still a fun villain's song. Likewise, Friends to the End is a great theme, it is simply misplaced being used in this film when Tom and Jerry as characters are supposed to be about their antagonism. You all likewise have to be torn on the fact that Dana Hill (voice of young Max Goof from Goof Troop) is the voice of Jerry in this film. Jerry shouldn't be talking, but Dana Hill's distinctive voice almost makes it worth it.

Believe it or not, this was my first look at Tom and Jerry with this movie and really enjoying it when I was little. For those who says Tom and Jerry shouldn’t talk, take a look at some of the shorts and see there are some times they do talk.

Tom & Jerry can "sometimes" be friends. More like Frienemies. When something messes with their qouta, I enjoy when the two call it a truce to settle something. It happens a few times in the theatrical shorts.

I also think of The Night Before Christmas and Snowbody Loves Me, where in both shorts, Tom succeeds in keeping Jerry out in the cold, only to later be overcome with guilt and believe he'll die, resulting in him bringing him back and reviving him.

Same. Even though he put it as the fourth worst in his Top 5 Worst & Best Tom and Jerry Movies video, he still considered it a guilty pleasure. Unlike most people, including Doug/Critic, Josh didn't really mind Tom and Jerry talking and becoming friends. He actually enjoys the novelty seeing them become friends. He even found it refreshing to hear them talk, even though it goes against the formula and to him it was unconventional and interesting to hear their verbal communications. He also said that it didn't felt like it took away from his original vision of their characters as they talked exactly how he'd expect. To say I kind of agree with his opinion would be an understatement as I too grew up with this movie when it aired on albanian television in the 2000s along with the other Tom and Jerry movies, the theatrical shorts and Tom & Jerry Tales. It taught me that there's nothing wrong with seeing these characters just once working together. Ironically, this movie feels more original than the later movies from the 2010s, as all they do is just slap Tom and Jerry on another IP. Josh's opinions are exactly mine.

Honestly even without Tom and Jerry, it does feel like a knock off of The Rescuers, though I failed to see why people compared it to The Little Mermaid.
