Priscilla Tolkien's apology for taking so long to return the Ruth Draper sounds very like her father.

The animated film was my LotRs for many years as I was nearly 30 when the films came out. Think i first read Rings in the mid 80s.

How can we best distinguish a first state of a first edition first printing? How does one find the best bibliographies of any given author?

For Tolkien your best place to start is Wayne G. Hammond’s bibliography. It’s different for every author, and really every publisher (and era). There’s no single perfect answer!

Trotter is really small, Hobbit small indeed. The other guests don’t mention it. Stood up he can be no more than 15 inches tall. Either that or he has massive books that you couldn’t even pick up.
