I am delighted to reconnect with my dear friend, songwriter and super arranger Tom Bähler
Tom's journey unfolds with a fascinating tale of his initial encounter with a young Michael Jackson and later, the renowned Quincy Jones. Over the span of four decades, he would establish himself as their most trusted vocal arranger. Tom's indelible mark can be traced through the early Motown recordings with Michael, his collaboration with the Jackson 5, the intriguing backstory of "The Wiz," and his pivotal role as Associate Producer on the iconic "Off the Wall" album. Additionally, he reveals untold anecdotes from the making of "Beat It," the famous "beat 4 sound", delving into the history of the game-changing Synclavier synthesizer and its connection to Michael, as well as his contribution to the legendary "We Are the World," among other remarkable experiences.
Notably, Tom is the gifted songwriter behind one of Michael's beloved ballads, "She's Out of My Life." In this conversation, you'll gain insights into what it was like to witness Michael's astonishing ability to sing well beyond his years, and discover his unexpected fascination with figures like Leonardo Da Vinci. We'll also explore Michael's studio reluctance and his relationship with Berry Gordy. ABOUT ANTHONY
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns , Internal Affairs , The Man From Elysian Fields , 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles , been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller .
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones , Jack Nitzsche , Lamont Dozier , Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

i remember buying casettes and later cd's in the 80's and 90's and reading the linear notes because i was always interested in who the musicians and producers etc,,,,were,,,,and tom bahler was for sure a name i heard before,,,,so watching this video is really cool,,,,now i know a lot more about this person

I wanted to ask you a question on whether or not you're familiar with Paul Meany of Mute Math and whether or not you'd be interested in collaborating with him in the future. I think one thing that’s important for people to understand is a lot of these interactions he’s explaining were in person. “Are you writing a song? Come to my house and play it.” There’s amazing things about this digital age, but there’s also things that have been lost. Being in person and vibrating with other human beings is how great music is made. Also, for those who’ve made it this far in the comment, @58:45 are some very important statements. “These hands are finite” and Anthony explaining that the modern DAW, although amazing, is also finite. They’re all tools, not absolutes, and creativity should not live and die with the tools we use to create art. It’s from the soul.

What an incredible interview! So full of insight, charm, wit and human warmth. It goes way beyond just music and delves into what it is to be human. At the end I still felt there was so much more to be said and so many more stories too be told. Hopefully there'll be a Part 2 at some point. Your interview technique is great too - letting people speak and only interjecting with salient points and clarification. In hindsight now that we know that there will probably never be an artist in the world again that will have Michael's impact and influence. Tom should be proud that he made him weep 'so well' that it actually made the song feel more real then just being a typical ballad. It's 'The' Ballad cause of that crying!

Yes baby be mine is a deluxe pop confection ala quincy Jones. A carefully tagged demo that was given the 1982 quincy & friends deluxe treatment. One of the tracks that made the THILLER ALBUM so strong and well received.

OFF THE WALL was more true to MJ’s and Q’s roots. Thriller and Bad were more mainstream, influenced by MTV. I was lucky to have purchased one of the first 20,000 copies of OTW, this included the bonus 7” picture disc of ‘Ease on Down the Road’. This is a treat of an interview, thank you so much Anthony.

That's not quite what happened. Greg said he wrote arrangement on the bridge. He got arrangement credits. It was Q who kind of triggered Greg about it, he was just fine with arrangement credits. It has nothing to do with fairness, there is a legal definition to "co-writer". Why should MJ have given more credit than what's due? Because of "fairness'? To who?
