He refers to his hair as "THEM" because in the German language, the word "hair" is ALWAYS plural. There is no distinction between a hair, the hairs, etc. The hair on your head is plural. At least...I think that's it. I'm not sure if I am explaining it right, but in the German language you wouldn't call your hair an "it." You would call it "they" for subject or "them" for object, I think.

That could be because we Germans say: "Ich wasche SIE (die Haare)" ("sie" = 3rd person plural (of "es")). We say "Meine Haare", which is plural and means "My hair". Hope, you can understand xD I'm not good in explaining something xP

it's because in German, the word hair is plural. if you say it singular it refers to your pubic hair or something like that.

It's because hair is plural in German. In English we say my hair IS blonde. In German, Meine Haare SIND blond, which is my hair (s) ARE blonde :)
