Television was pretty low-budget in its early days. The opening credits included film footage of a German V2 rocket from WW2. Also, series star Frankie Thomas did a commercial during the show. The series' producer, Allen Ducovny, went on to create another sci-fi kids' show, "Space Academy".

Only 13 years between this and Star Trek. Seems more like a 100 year jump.

In retrospect, it seems a pity that Roddenberry didn't arrange for an homage episode, in which a Federation ship, the Polaris, with Captain Corbett and crew ("They were still talking about you when I was at the Academy!" -- Kirk) assist the Enterprise in some emergency. All the cast were alive and well; as far as I know, only John Fiedler appeared on both Tom Corbett and Star Trek. Certainly Tom Corbett had at least an indirect inspirational role for Trek (by getting kids interested in space as a final frontier).

Tom Corbett space cadet is set in the year 2353. 24th century. TOS Star Trek was set in the mid 2260's, 23rd century. TNG was in the 24th century , 2363-2370's.

This show was done LIVE - these are surviving Kinescopes (and if you don't know what that is, the first television shows were recorded by pointing a film camera at a in-house television screen). So, you're seeing the first take of everything here. They didn't start recording show on film until the late 1950s - until then, MOST television was live.
