Perfect. Couldn't agree more and it's great to see your push against plastic. We actually had to special order the ceramic/porcelain plates instead of choosing one of the hundreds of choices of ugly plastic plates. We do have a set of (actually really good high quality) drinking glasses in some sort of heavy plastic. I thought about wooded plates a while ago but wasn't sure until I saw this. Great video, thanks for sharing :) /Rasmus

Gawd bless ya....I tell everyone about my shoes that I bought 20 years ago and still look brand new...and some deck shoes that I bought around the same time that have now moulded to my feet and show no sign of deteriorating. Those deck shoes have been soaked many times in the sea, left out for days in heavy rain, used to walk miles inland...and are still going...they'll probably outlive me!

A good 'call to arms', Tom. Many thanks for the great yarn. Yes, and interesting boats in the anchorage? You're right - sometimes, not often! I am absolutely with you on the plastic plates, mugs and glasses Tom. My boating is on a much smaller scale and doesn't involve us cooking and eating onboard; But we have spent over 25 years camping, caravanning and motorhomeing... I have to say that I have tried all the plastic good on offer but we ditched them years and years ago. There is nothing worse than and nice trip around France, stopping off at a vineyard and picking up a few choice bottles and then drinking them out of plastic!! I have found that the plastic plates, glasses and mugs even blow off the table! Yes the ceramic and glass alternatives are heavier, less of a problem on a boat I guess, a potential problem on a caravan... just take less clothes I say! We too have had very few breakages. When we first took glasses with us we would carefully wrap them in tea towels... these days we don't even bother with that. Glass glasses are even very cheap from places like Wilco, a quarter of the price of a plastic one. If they break, replace them, but always carry a couple of spares!!
@columkenn2 жыл бұрын
Enthusiastically agreed on the plastic. The same for camping trips, avoid plastic plates, cups and glasses, they are nasty. It's a sad man drinks tea from a plastic cup)) Fully agree

I abhor the heavy colored plastic containers of the liquid laundry detergent. Totally unnecessary. The cardboard box of laundry powder is biodegradable. Of course in humid Florida it keeps best in the airconditioning. But out in the garage where the washer lives, I have a dedicated puddy knife to break it back into powder when I wash clothes. I'm a chef. Plastic cutting boards are bad for knife blades (and not any more sanitary than hardwood). Give me a wooden cutting board any time. My favorite coffee mug is a "china mug"; heavy ceramic that "helped save the Rockland Maine Breakwater Lighthouse". Single malt [fill in your favorite brand] only in glass too. (I'm partial to the product of Speyside but Islay is good too). I have no proof but I don't think wine tastes like wine in a plastic "glass". I hadn't thought about wooden plates. When I finally get my liveaboard, I will acquire some wooden plates, thanks for the advice.

My cruises might be some what more modest and my boat may be slightly smaller, but I have to agree, there is something inherently civilized about not earing off of plastic, good ceramics, and glass have a novelty all their own when used hundreds of miles from home. And while we're at it lets get rid of those cheap disposable paper plates as well, there's nothing homey about them. And when the weather turns chill theres nothing quite loke dipping down below after watch and settling in to a hot beverage next to the fire (Tom drinks tea, I like coffee, Tom's stove burns coal, mine burns diesel) and popping your boots off putting your feet up and listening to the hull and water interact, extra credit of you add a dash of rum to the coffee!

My gaff cutter is too small for glass, I drink hot stuff out of stainless double wall mugs and G&T, wine whiskey out of nice highly polished stainless stemless double walled goblets.
