woke up this mornin' and was stoked to watch this video of Tom - always been a solid stand-up guy and so happy to see him still livinin' the water world dream. An admirer back in those '80s and now in the 2020s-all the best from this 63yr old SoCal 'surfer kid' - cheers.

Tom is a special surfing talent, with a deeply personal relationship with the ocean and waves. I grew up surfing and hanging out with him in Santa Barbara in the 1970s. He was a friend of mine. I even had the good fortune of having his dad, the legendary big-wave rider Pat, make me a board. IMO, it’s no coincidence that Tom is not only a world-class surfer but also an accomplished musician. There are some athletes who are artists in their sport. Tom is one of them.

The true goat in my eyes (with much respect to Slater), I met Curren one time as he was packing his boards away at his truck in the Wimpy's parking lot in HB (during early rounds of the then OP Pro). I was 16. He took the time to speak to me and asked me what I was riding (a tricked out Lance Collins quad when no one was riding quads, so thumbs up to Lance and son Richie) and where I like surfing best in HB (cliffs). He took the time to answer my questions and ask me things important to me. Everything I thought I saw on TV/Video's about the guy out of the water were made true that day. Inspiration to my generation of surfers and reminding us that character out of the water is as important as character in the water.

Great video! This guy is a true legend and class act! When I first started surfing back in the late 80s, he was the king. Great to see him still at it and living such a pure, serene, genuine life. Beautiful.

Great times surfing with and watching Tom ripping it up along with Dana McCorkle and the rest of the Santa Barbara boys just shredding, the Fun times I had with those guys will always be cherished, I wished that Tom would have come down to my neck of the woods in Oxnard he would have been accepted to perform without any hassle, Kim Mearig came a few times and was treated with big respect and she respected and was stoked to meet the heavy locals as well, was always welcome without hassle, It would have been a pleasure to have Tom come and rip Silver Strand, Tom is very respectful and that respect would have certainly have been noted, Keep on ripping it Tom your an inspiration

Tom Curren the guy who made Al Merrick a millionaire. Having surfed in Santa Barbara in those halcyon seventies and eighties, I remember, nobody really thought much about Al's boards. Until Tom Curren blew it all up. Mostly my SB crew surfed with John Bradbury's boards made for point surfing From Rincon to Razor Blades. Still, Tom was the epitome of a Santa Barbara Surfer with some serious moves on an Al Merrick board. Nice to see him still at it with his music too. Jalama and El Capitan and the Ranch, forever.

True, but they both deserve every bit of the success they've achieved, and their individual success was/is only possible because their symbiotic partnership. Tom didn't shine a light on Al any more than Al shining a light on Tom. A wonderful and mutually rewarding collaboration between two gifted artists and craftsmen.

He gave me the stink eye on a big day with huge current at rights off the point some years back when i briefly drifted close to the contest after a good wave while his kid was competing out there. Seen him out there some other times at gravels reef away from the crowd where he got some really long lefts. Keep up the stoke!

I remember “Tommy” from Hammonds. He might have been 8, but he looked like 6. Four ft waves overhead on him. Spot on wave judgement. I made him some booties from old ones I cut down… lots of rocks there. Black dog as big as him …. he was a star then too. He even knew, at his age, about surf breaks all around the world … amazing even then.
