Eh. Blink isn't the same without Tom. But blink is the trio. It's not the same if you take out any of the 3. For example +44 was a pretty good band with Mark on vocals and Travis drumming with 2 other members in it and they only did one album. AnA wasn't that great and prolly only got some of the hype it did strictly cause of Tom. Then when blink went on without Tom and had skiba on lead vocals they just weren't as good either. It's just not the same if you don't get the mark tom and Travis show.

@@hazysundaysband yeah, i think dude ranch was their first record to be co-released with a bigger label ,cargo and grilled cheese, which were their first labels with which they released cheshire cat were a little more like indie-ish labels, dude ranch was released with cargo and MCA, and enema was with MCA 100%, back in those days i think they really had alot of influence if a band made it or not. (ironically the people at mca records hated dude ranch before it had officially released, thinking the band was going to be a failure, at a sort of pre release party, executives and other members of the label were invited to listen to the record and before the first song was over, all of them walked out of room and the band was like "we could've signed to Epitaph..." but when enema came out they apparently started sucking up to the band saying "we always believed in you, bla bla bla" according to tom) also i kinda of agree that blink didnt come famous with travis' arrival to the band, BUT, he actually managed to help the band write songs, or at least structure them, differently, it added slightly more substance to the band. according to tom, most of what started as enema was sounding alot like their previous releases, and during a session, travis got off his kit and walked over to tom and said "why cant you play something else?, im playing the same beat over and over" and tom said "im not the groove expert , thats your job, you tell me what to do to make it sound better" and travis was like "oh, so i can what i want? and that way you can change what you're doing on guitar" , so yeah, according to them, when he came to the band, he felt more like another songwriter instead of just a drummer, a few of drumming channels, like harry miree, have got more in depth how he has brought different elements through his drumming that added more substance to the songs.

@@ryline666 probably underrated isnt the best word to describe him, after all, he is pretty known, and to some level really appreciated by many people....but i think little under looked could be better term, i think when it comes to tom's earlier work, he tried to add alot more substance to the songs by adding some crazy parts on guitar, i think on some early blink demos and some of cheshire cat he showed that even though he wasnt a flashy guitar player, was adding more to the song, examples like touchdown boy, sometimes or tv, wasting time he was trying to be a little more flashy on guitar or like "solos" he made on songs like fentoozler, strings, everytime or marlboro man.. surely he was no shredder or killer blues guitarist but it certainly added to the song...after 2000 i think his guitar parts were way more simplified and basic but still the songs manage to be catchy as hell

For those who don’t understand how age and puberty works; Tom’s voice was bound to get deeper with age and more scragglier as he kept playing bigger and longer shows. That’s why his voice sounds different on Neighborhoods than the self-titled album. You can kinda hear his blink voice on the first AVA record, but I’m sure he used less Adams’s Apple and more throat to relax his vocals and use less strain. I’ve tried to replicate both vocal styles and Tom’s AVA version is a lot easier to sing. You can also hear this on I Miss You. So no, his voice didn’t change because he was on pain killers when he broke his back in 2001, or when he started playing a Gibson ES model in 2003. Hope that clears up any confusion.

If you observe younger Tom (20's) then you can see he had a really tiny head. It was proportionally smaller than that of other adults. I think this contributed to his voice being so high pitched. Generally when we grow up from child to adult gradually our voices get deeper (even without puberty). A 2 year old child has a higher pitched voice than teh same child as 4 year old etc). I think Tom's voice used to eb high pitched because he had such a small head (and thus smaller vocal chords). However, when he got older well into adulthood his head continued to grow into a regular sized head right now, which means that his vocal chords grew too and which result in his pitch being deeper than before. This is the same reason why elton johns voice change so much too. He used to have a normal headsize (prophertionally) and his head continued to grow and grow when he was well into adulthood. Now he has a really big head. He sounds much deeper every 10 years that go by.

That's because that was after AVA where he really challenged himself as an artist and to become good. He only 6 songs on the first 6 albums. In comparison to Mark and Travis at the time he didn't do much as far as the initial creation of the songs goes. AVA made himself challenge himself to be better as an artist and musician and singer. That's why he sounded so much better when they got back together. Because Tom got a lot fucking better by doing what he did and continues to do with AVA.

I’ve been a blink 182 fan for roughly 18 years and have seen them live with Tom and with Matt. The time I saw Tom was the absolute best concert I’ve ever been to in my life (plus that was my very first time seeing them). I would’ve seen them one more time, but they had to cancel their show in 2012. The second time...I was absolutely heartbroken hearing Matt sing Feeling This. Even though it was only my second time seeing them, I left before the encore because I couldn’t hear Matt sing Carousel, the very first song I ever fell in love with. It wasn’t the blink 182 I started listening to when I was 10 years old. I think Mark/Matt/Travis mesh well together, and I think Matt is a very talented musician. I hold absolutely nothing against him as an artist or as a person ...but leave OG blink songs alone. Music, esp blink 182, means SO MUCH to my life. Hell, I even named my son after 2/3 of this band! I think Tom is so incredibly talented and has a voice no one else can even come close to copying. If Tom ever came back and they went on tour, I’d spend what little savings I have on front row tickets to see my favorite band one more time.

very well said, and i appreciate the respect shown towards matt, i think is something fans should do more often, even if they arent that fond of him, as a bigger alkaline trio fan i appreciate that. and you said it very well, looking back on those old shows and stuff, there is a magic they had that cant be matched today. i personally believe i havent been a blink 182 fan for that long, i kinda started listening to them during the neighborhoods/DED era so a while ago but not nearly as long as people who started getting into them in the early 2000s like yourself, i kinda wish i could have seen them during their golden era. and while ive been happy with the current blink (except for john feldmann) i wish we can get something that involves mark tom and travis, though i think there could be something in a couple of years, this is kinda wishful thinking, but blink has many milestones (like 20th anniversaries of take off and the self titled album and the 30th anniversary of blink as a band )coming soon and i dont think tom would ignore those, we can only be hopeful that tom and mark are on good terms and could have talked about doing something, travis and tom are cool as far as i know

Always have, and always will love Tom. I think he sounds better now than he ever did. If you take a step back and look and think about all of the different stuff he's done, tried and succeeded in my opinion, I'm thankful that he didn't just stay with blink as mark doesn't want to evolve. Mark wants to do the same ole and Tom didn't and doesn't. The 2003 album was awesome, fresh at the time and I was excited to see where they were going; then split up. Neighborhoods was interesting, I liked it but it seemed broken up and pieced together. I hope they can work their differences out and work together but look at the current state of blink vs Angels and airwaves; to me AVA are head and tails over Blink and I don't mind Skiba. Blink should just sing their new stuff as Skiba doesn't fit the old blink of Tom, Mark and Travis

well said, i think blink has had a problem that i mentioned too many times before, but basically its trying to follow a formula that has worked for them before and replicate it (by this point it DOESNT work), though i think NINE was a good direction for the band, even though it was a little more outsourced (some say its a little disingenuous, and i can agree with it a bit, but not too bad)but i think some of the new producers have offered some really good ideas. as for tom, i like that he hasnt been afraid of trying new sounds with AVA, i feel over all the 2010s works had so much variety to them, its pretty cool, it was refreshing. And you can tell he really takes his time with his work, sometimes id say too much time, he announces something and he takes forever to release it (i was hoping his new ava record would have come out last year but he only released a few singles of it), but over, all its really good material, and is always welcomed. But anyway, i hope he finishes it this year cause also alk3 is making an ep and im so ready for that

I feel like Tom's one of those voices that has only gotten better over the years. No offense, at the start of Blink he was pretty bad singer, even for pop punk standards. (Same goes for Mark tbh) but as soon as their untitled album came out Tom went from kinda a bad singer to something better, and I find his voice for when he's in Angel's and Airwaves to be his best Material. I find that when he joined Angel's and Airwaves, he found his true voice, and has kept with it ever sense. Not to mention Tom's a REALLY good Guitarist. Alot of people may give Blink alot of shit for being pop punk, but out of all the bands in the genre, no one can play their instruments as well as Blink. Tom's Guitar riffs are very impressive. I remember when I first grabbed a guitar thinking I could play them like "Most pop punk stuffs easy" and it was really hard. Just listen to M+M's or Dumpweed. But its not just Tom who can play really well, Travis and Mark are really good at their instruments which is why I find Blink to be better than other bands in the pop punk, or even Alternative category because of how well they play.

In the beginning it was his pure, inner voice. Later on I think he 'tried' to be more of a singer. Maybe because the other style was hurting. I often laugh because of the live performances of Tom singing. In the beginning, say Big Day Out 99 it was great... but throughout the years, the studio recordings were more singing... live shows was more.. yeah, how should I call it? Just not good. I think I could write a book about the voice-evolution of Tom Delonge. But the market is pretty small, I guess ;)

i liked that analogy haha....fair enough, truth be told i kinda miss tom, mainly for the humor during live performances, but i didnt like the 2009-2014 era of blink mainly because of what tom was doing, i do think he made some great songs during neighborhoods and DED but his playing, his singing and getting drunk before shows was kind of a killer for me and why i was forward with matt coming in. as of why he left, he couldnt commit to blink, the way mark and travis wanted, or needed, i guess. plans for recordings were getting pushed back, shows were getting canceled because tom had so many things going on, writing books, making short films, making AVA records, the whole to the stars company, the UFO research etc. tom has said that there was more to him than just music so thats why he wanted to pursue other things. but, i think, and take this with a grain of salt...tom could come back in between 2021-2023. i think blink is hitting many milestones during those years that i dont think he would ignore, like in 2021 is the 20th anniversary for take off your pants and jacket, 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of blink 182 as a band and 2023 is the 20th for the untitled album. also as of now, 2020 blink is eligible for being an inductee to the rock and roll hall of fame, so who knows plans for something with mark tom and travis could happen sooner than we expect.

@@zacharyallen495 i dont believe they arent good without him. surely, the current era of blink can never compare to the golden years of 1999-2003, and surely i do miss the mark/tom banter and the delonge signature style on blink songs with the hammer ons and crazy riffs, but the post reunion era was just a bad time for the band. tom being drunk while performing, singing kind of weird, and recording wise, the band only worked together on neighborhoods for a month before they went and worked separately mainly via emails, that record does have a few killer tracks but as a whole doesnt do much for me, because it didnt really had a clear vision of what it wanted to be, tom wanted something more experimental and mark and travis wanted something more classic and as time went by the follow up got delayed to the point it never happened and yes the matt era definitely has had its fare share of flaws, believe me, as an even bigger alk3 fan i had more expectations for matt in the band, but i think that over all, the band had alot of drive again when matt joined, they looked really stocked to be touring and being out there making shows constantly and even california as a whole (normal and dxl) even though they made the mistake of making it too repetitive, it actually has some quiet a few jems, even though some of the songs are kinda filler, you can make a pretty good mix of both regular and dlx songs. and nine really was a good direction for the band, while a little more outsourced, i think it was the right direction for the band, its a little more thought out, they did took their time to make it and it had alot of good tracks. so personally im pretty happy with this era of blink, surely i wish we could have a blink similiar to the old days and there are some things that i really miss about tom, but i wasnt a huge fan of the post reunion years, and if were are just gonna have 1 record and less and less shows per year and tom singing really weird, i think id rather stick with this lineup for now

same, i love travis to death and i love every era of the band from cheshire cat to nine but my favorite era for me will always be from 93-98, i feel that toms guitar work was the best during those years ,and both mark and tom made great lyrics, even back in the day, for a starting band they were actually pretty good , they were mostly humorous but they knew how to be deep at times (ex. toast and bananas, apple shampoo, untitled, waggy, cacophony) granted when travis came, i think they were writing songs more as a band, when he came along, he had more saying about how song should be structured and he helped arrange ideas differently, he definitely was an upgrade to the band, but the scott era/pre EOTS travis era definitely had a charm to it that i just enjoy the most
