Football is so far up its own arse it thinks that Football Clubs should commemorate loads of occasions. It’s nonsense. If you want to respect the dead of 2 WWs or even all the military who have lost there lives in conflict, then get off your arse and go to a commemorative event. Ridiculous that sporting occasions have been taken over by these issues where everyone is expected to follow a single line of thought. That’s not freedom. So if the authorities are not happy with dissent, don’t use football as a tool.

You are supposed to take a minutes silence on the the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to remember your fallen, what we see at the football is nothing short of a fascist citizen test.

Every other club seems to be able to keep the silence. Celtic fans can't even take 1 minute a year to remember Peter Johnstone, one of their own players who lost his life in WW1. Celtic claim Irish heritage yet can't be silent for 49,000 Irishmen who died during that war.

Didn't the remembrance Sunday thing not start in 1946 after ww2? Tom's arguement about Celtic players dying in first world war may be correct but the poppy wasn't around that time although was later to include the first ww, it's now just a nod to the empire for past atrocities, I respect the minutes silence for all fallen in both ww1 and 2 which is as i always remembered it but will not recognise any war since
@WHU632 ай бұрын
Remembrance began with those who died in WW1. That war ended at 11am on 11th November 1918. So why do you have respect for the fallen of the two World wars but not any subsequent wars? Soldiers go to where they're posted by the Government. It's not a choice.

Typical. Shameful that some Irish will always support the British. Conveniently ignores that the poppy is not related to the 2 world wars alone but also remembers their murderous campaigns in Ireland. Maybe he should listen to James McClean on the matter. Also no comment on the song Celtic fans were singing about Aidan McAnespie an innocent Irishman shot down in cold blood by the British army on his way to a Gaelic football game in Co.Tyrone. No mention either that he was subject to ongoing harassment each time he crossed the border to work prior to this. British soldiers even urinated in his lunch at times. Some heroes.

The tradition of observing the minute's silence on November 11th at 11 a.m. started in 1919, a year after World War I ended on November 11, 1918. Remembrance Sunday was introduced in 1946, 27 years later, to allow people to honor those who lost their lives in both world wars on the closest Sunday to that date. Given this long-established tradition, anyone demanding an additional minute’s silence later on should be considered as overstepping. The current observances are well-respected, and pushing for more silences outside of these established moments may come across as unnecessary or divisive which is what people like Tom English want.

Remembrance Sunday is for honouring all fallen armed forces and many Irish people, people with Irish relatives/strong ties to Ireland or even just of Irish heritage justifiably can’t bring themselves to betray that heritage by observing a tradition that includes honouring those that occupied, brutalised and murdered their kin, not to mention the institution that ordered it. Nobody is balanced enough to even consider if those objecting to the minute silence are offended by even being asked to observe it in the first place. They object to Protesting a minute silence with silence (eg turning their backs) because it may be more respectful but it isn’t very effective. Had they simply turned their backs they’d be getting heavily criticised for that also. Perhaps it would be more sensible to not ask people to observe a tradition who are widely known to object to it. If we’re honest and rational we can all agree that there were simple solutions that would completely avoid this outcome, such as putting more thought into fixture scheduling.

@@Dave-s8y All of them? Those who do are free to make their own decision. However, not even that many African and Asian countries observe it. Some Irish do though. Ireland observes it’s own day to remember/commemorate fallen soldiers. Regardless, I don’t think a sensible argument is to tell them they should get over it. Certainly not when, as I mentioned above, you clearly have no real knowledge of the history of the occupation. Surely that should be critical when attempting to form a criticism of or argument against the protesters actions?
