Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like you see freestyle football as a subclass of football (your last sentence makes me think that). I think freestyle football and football don't share the same concept: the first one is an individual activity in which the "baller" tries to improve his/her skills, while the second one is a team-oriented sport. The only mutual thing is the ball. Of course, I agree with you by saying who does freestyle football doesn't learn to play football: but I don't really get why freestyle football is a waste of time. It's an activity just like practising sports (it often can be a passion for those who do it), or playing videogames, or anything that can be an hobby. Every hobby can be pointless if you are not the person who does it, even your hobbies can be considered pointless by other ones. I really don't know what do you mean with "pointless": You didn't specify in what thing freestyle football is pointless to. Is freestyle pointless to learning soccer? Is freestyle pointless to getting money? In these two cases, maybe it is so. But, was it your meaning of "pointless"? Let me know, if you want.
