We are all so different and life is so interesting because of that. I was just a happy kid that was grateful for my elm tree in the front and my rope swing that swung from one end of the backyard to the other. Nature and animals were my world. Tom is still that happy kid inside and out, aren't we all so lucky he has been in our life.❤

As a military brat moving every 3 years I can relate to what Tom narrates. My takeaway was making friends was not tenable because you never knew when you peers were moving to their next duty assignment. It was a good way to learn how to ADAPT to your environment quickly.

I'm glad it worked for him. I loved that I grew up and lived in the same place with my wonderful parents until I was old enough to move out on my own. I didn't know Tom but we shared the same town for a few years I found out recently.

We all knew kids in school who just magically appeared in class midway through the year. And magically disappeared at the end of the term, never to be seen again. Even as a kid, I’d sometimes wonder what might have happened to them. This wonderful interview gives insights into nomadic families. I believe in other instances it comes down to inability to pay rent and being forced to move.

I'm so grateful to God to have grown up in a stable community during a time of stability before no-fault divorce became rampant and family-destroying feminism had taken root.

@ These days women are forced to go out and work because a single low-salaried job may not cut it. My mom worked out of necessity, not because she was a bra-burner. 🙄

So much of this resonates with me, my family moved nine times when I was little, I went to three elementary three junior high and three high schools. It makes you very accepting of change. But what I really agree with is how in our generation the parents did not bring the kids into any decision-making. It was just here we go again Sometimes hard and sometimes for the better but it does make you a very strong person. Kudos to Tom so good to hear your story.

I attended 15 primary and secondary schools. Members of my late wife's family basically grew up and were educated in the same schools. Just different life experiences. Moving? I celebrated my 31st birthday in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1977. How did I get into Afghanistan? I walked in from Iran. Now that is "moving!"

I did the very same, Tom: attended 7 schools. And I believe it helped me develop people skills. First thing done at every new school, was to seek out the class-bully before he found you, and get past that initiation quickly ..!!.. and after that, they often became your friend and protector.

“The Food Chain of That Type of Family” 😂😍🤣😆 - leave it to Hanks to come up with that perspective! That’s a pretty darn appropriate term…one is within the fall-out zone of, or under the umbrella of influence….and each member of the family is affected in different ways. Hanks’ survival skills included a certain perspective- I suspect that is part nature/ part nurture, and he had a different mother from the other three kids. My brother and I had the same parents and environment, but he needed more stability, predictability, and protection than I. Unfortunately he did not get it 😢, and his experience growing up was tough …had a genius I.Q., I suspect he was “ high on the spectrum,” “ADHD”, etc, & was victimized both inside and outside the family . My I.Q. wasn’t quite as high but I was able to navigate my environment much more successfully, had good school experiences, and as my mate describes it “ have some deep well of inner strength and optimism to draw upon.” . All of this is to say that the family food chain can either adequately or inadequately nourish its members, and the sequelae of its inadequacy can be devastating. 😢🤬😭🥺

I can understand moving around as a child may be somewhat exciting, but when you find yourself poorer and poorer with each time, it takes the excitement out of it.

The new business model is immigrant labour across many sectors. Who is going to employ a local to work in a supermarket when you can employ a practising architect from another country?
