I once had the pleasure of playing alongside Tom in the late 70s when I attended a Jamey Aebersold clinic. I was 16. He was amazing.

Bruh the way he phrased the melody and outlines the changes in his solo is incredible, listen to his latest record with Ethan Iverson, Common Practice. What you describe is entirely not the case
