Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, is a GRAMMY-nominated and multi-platinum producer, film scorer, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical style sets him right at the cutting edge of contemporary music, and his approach to film composition is a refreshing spin on the art form.Tom’s scoring credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Batman v Superman and many more - along with the upcoming Alita: Battle Angel (out everywhere February 14th).
Tom’s background in and knowledge of classical forms lends itself to his music production style, while he’s simultaneously able to keep a finger on the pulse of popular contemporary music and culture. His unique background and skill as a multi-instrumentalist (keyboards, guitar, drums, violin, and bass), as well as his knowledge of pro audio, provide him all the tools he needs to create without limits.

@@Producelikeapro, yes Warren. Bauhaus is still one of my all time favourites. Daniel and David were not only great on bass and guitar. When they had to sing on "Burning from the inside", it took quite some time to recognise, that Peter Murphy missed almost all of the recording, because he was ill. Although Peter Murphy is one the greatest male singers alive, even if I do not like all of his later work. Speaking of 80's heroes. Is there a chance, that you maybe are going to interview Alan Wilder, when you're in Britain again?

Hi Warren, I have been following Tom for some years now, Studio Time and his music, but I think you captured an informal portrait of him with this video, close to the passion and nature of music as you both represent. And richly informative for the closeups on many synths. Thanks

I'm so glad you got the full tour of his insane setup. Jeeezus, this man is a bit of a mad scientist!! This is absolutely incredible. I am COMPLETELY awestruck. Thanks so much Warren for such an in depth interview and tour of his work space.

I don't know the details either nor the math, but I vaguely can remember that basically, the Fourier theory says that if you oscillate a sinewave, or let's say you draw a sinewave on paper, and you superimpose all the harmonics/octaves on that fundamental sinewave, you'll eventually end up with a square wave. That means, at least in theory, that if you oscillate a square wave, you can create any possible sound by decomposing harmonics. Cool video! I really admire this man and not only because he's dutch. : )

great interview! back in the day when i studdied at a dutch conservatory he was also a teacher there and he became and still is one of my biggest inspirations. just the way how he likes to tell about stuff and teach you things is so extremely addictive. he knew how to push the buttons on people to make them more active and inspired to write new music and learn new recording techniques. i really miss those days.

Tom, I missed it if you have an original one in your studio. I see that Eventide has a new plugin Instant Phaser MkII emulating the Instant Phaser from the early 70’s. I think that it would be right up your alley. You’d like it as well Warren. Very cool.

Still watching, but I have to say, I almost started fainting, when I saw the VL-1. It's bigger brother / sister the VP-1 was demonstrated in Frankfurt back in the day and should cost 70.000 bucks (German Marks). These were the first physical modelling synthesizers and besides the brass, plucked, woodwind sounds, the VP-1 created some sounds I never heard somewhere else. Great interview so far, great guy. Thanks :) P.S. These modular systems are incredible, stunning and unbelievable. Fourier btw. had nothing to do with music. He was a physicist and the Fourier transformation describes a mathematical way to fit sine waves into any kind of frequency as long as it is periodical. This is done by approximation and repetition. I can't explain that in English, it would be even difficult in German :D.
