The food bit isn't entirely accurate, but it's a fun conversation. Barbecue originated in the Americas, Spanish explorers/conquerers put a name to it and spread the cooking technique around to more parts of America. Others attribute the style to European settlers who would smoke a variety of meats to preserve them. Modern US BBQ has several different "Regions" including Texas, Kansas city, /MemphisTennessee and Carolina. Not to mention the modern pit roasting techniques that have been developed over the years, many within the United States. There's also a lot of discussion regarding the sauces, rubs, cooking techniques etc. Personally I think the best foods offer a taste of multiple cultures and ingredients. Food history is fun, and you can trace a lot of meals down to ingenuity and available ingredients.

Exactly! It isn't a valid argument to say American food isn't American because it's an amalgamation of many different cultures into one dish. Chinese-American food isn't really Chinese. It's inspired by it! The history and cultural study is so fascinating. I wish people understood that mixing cultures is how you GET new cultures. It's awesome!

The story goes that in the late 17th century, French-speaking Belgians living in the region of Wallonia had a tradition of frying small fish. The term "French fries" is believed to have come from American soldiers stationed in Belgium during World War I. Actually it's not true, even Belgian historian like Pierre Leclerc have proved that the French fries were born in Paris during the 19th century. Over the course of the 20th century, the fried potato disappeared from the streets of Paris and made its way to Belgium. And it became the national dish in Belgium. The Belgians naturally believed that the Chips originated in Belgium. As Belgium is a small and proud country they make a lot of noise about it but they don't really know their history.
