A perfect example of “riveting restraint.” He doesn’t oversing a single note. Other, younger singers would incinerate this. He goes for glow and slow burn. He serves the song impeccably. A master, this man.

As you said. But not only this. It takes a lot for an artist to break what people might expect from what he or she performed for a long time. I am coming back to this song and his voice every so often. Maybe mostly only every year. And it touches me deeply every time, all the same. Not only the melody or Tom Jones voice but the sincerity of the presentation.

But love the tweak the JMC brought to it. It's cool if y'all hate it too. We all have our takes on what is aesthetic. Didn't come to bitch, came to hear every take on this one as it touched folks. Hello amazing fan. It has come to my notice that some of my fans thinks I was the person who died. Late jones was The one who conceived the twist on Romeo and Juliet with composer John Donald Robb. He died 11th August, of cancer in his home in Sharon. I’m still alive and much healthy. Thanks dear fan....

Now if only Tom had written this he would be a true genius, but I suppose it's enough that he brought it. Gave me chills.

***** He's not even singing. he's just throwing out words. If this is your fav song. you are missing a lot in the history of music.

zougoulogo For one, he is singing. And two, you don't have to belt out vocals to be a great tune. In fact, most would say the writing is what makes it great. I like when people that don't know crap try to correct people. Makes me laugh

I had the album “This is Tom Jones”. I have to say the song “Tower of Song” is Tom Jones at this stage of his life. Sir Tom if you could please cut one full album with Jools Holland or at least a few more songs it would be greatly appreciated. Your collaborations with Jools are my favorite.

It's the heart behind the voice that brings the tonal colours to the songs. That's Tom Jones. He lets the song sing him ! What a gift to us all he has been for decades.

Eine tolle Interpretation von Tom! Genau so gut wie Leonhard. Ich höre beide immer wieder, wenn ich mich aufbauen will. Das gibt Kraft!

Austin Hackney: That'as only your opinion. This version of the song is a lot more melodic than Cohen's version. Sometimes a song comes along and it is more of a fit with a different artist than the original one.Such as Cohen's song Hallelujah. The version by the late Jeff Buckley is more deep and sensual than Cohen's is. Although, picking which is the best is relative. Each person has their favorite. * This is a link to the critically acclaimed version here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2mkiHmcbKp0mZY

@Austin Hackney I don't care what the rest say, I'm with you on this. Don't get me wrong, Tom Jones has a great voice and heaps of talent, but I have been listening to Leonard Cohen and really prefer his singing. It might be because I'm not a good singer and I can sing with Cohen. That is why I will always probably prefer listening to Leonard Cohen singing his own music. Matter of taste and opinion.

Never really paid attention to Tom Jones b4. Heard this song on XM channel, raced home to You Tube it. Found it incredibly moving, a man contemplating his own mortality, in a rather desolate environment. Honest, moving and slightly brutal. My opinion of Mr. Jones has certainly changed!!!
