This is a CNN and ESPN clip from 1989 when Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry and team President Tex Schramm left the organization. These two men, along with team Owner Clint Murchison and Personnel Director Gil Brandt built the finest and classiest organization in all of team team sports.

If you ever have a chance, even though Coach Landry is buried in the Dallas area, stop by the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas to see a huge stone set for the Coach. It sits near Barbara Jordan and Stephen F. Austin. Just a beautiful tribute.

Yes by today's NFL standards you can't even figure out who's the real boss on the sidelines. A few years ago Dick Nolan's son, Mike, who coached the 49ers, had to get approval from the NFL to wear his suit in honor of his Dad, who also coached the 49ers. Can you believe that? The NFL used to be a lot more fun and easy going. They are so into the marketing of their NFL gear everything just gets lost.

He wasn't going to step down willingly. He thought his success had bought him some down years but the Cowboys had been in a decline for years. Unfortunately, as a Packers fan, I find you argument hard to align with because they were so dominant in the early 90s. They were not winning any more Super Bowls with Landry. Favre and the Packers were denied three years in a row to Jimmy Johnson's team twice in Divisional and once in the NFC Championship. Who knows what would have happened in 96 and 97 had Jerry and Jimmy not feuded. Bottom line is the move made you a powerhouse, mostly due to Jimmy's brilliance and a sweet trade. Jerry's issue has always been personal relationships. He picks fights and favorites and needs to be so involved that he let a HOF coach walk. He probably should have been more graceful with Landry but Tom wasn't leaving willingly. I at least respected that he told Landry even when the old owner offered to fire him before selling off the team to Jerry. Jones made it a point to say it himself which I at least respect.

It was a sad ending and it did not have to go down that way. The demise of the Cowboys near the end of Tom Landry’s tenure was not his fault. Dallas kept drafting for positions instead of talent, and there was very little to no talent at the positions they were seeking to fill those voids with. Some great talented players slipped past them, which proves the point that in draft day, teams should go after the most talented player available instead of a position the team has a weakness in.

Tom Landry was the Dallas Cowboys. The team has never been the same quality since he left. As a teenager in the 70s, the Cowboys were the greatest. Roger Staubach was my hero. Each time the Cowboys make a huge play or a game-winning score I get a huge smile on my face. And then the cameras go directly to jErry and that huge smile is suddenly wiped right off. My Mother was a Dallas Cowboys fan right up to the firing of Tom. She has never watched football since. She is a West Texas native and I am a Washington native and a Cowboys faithful for 45 years. While Tom Landry had the reputation to be calm and collective, I recall many many years ago on Monday Night Football where there was a camera on Landry that caught him in a fit of excitement . . . as about as excited as anyone ever got to see him. I'll never forget that video replay MNF did of Landry's reaction to a momentous play that happened a moment before, where he was wide-eyed and expressed his excitement with a subtle hop into the air. xD
