This song really separated the real Tom fans from the fake ones. A lot of his “fans” couldn’t see what he was doing or try to understand what he was saying. The real ones have an open mind, and while we may not know about the struggles, we will at least listen and try to understand.

Just be aware that you and your beautiful family were created by father with the freewill to do as all of you wish, and if what all of you do with your freewill hurts someone, but not on purpose. Then what they have to say about it really doesn’t matter. Plus all of you have the right to choose. So fuck’um. And always remember. Your body, your mind, your control.

My father-in-law is black and one thing that I’ve noticed is the people screaming racism and protesting in the streets are middle to upper class white liberal SJW’s while he says nothing at all and looks at them like they’re out of their minds. Lol. There will always be racism in the world but it’s not anywhere as bad as what the media portrays it. I grew up and still live close to a town in KY that is 99.99 % white and I know a lot of people from there still and I can honestly say that not one person that I know from there is a racist. You would think a small town of all whites in KY would be where racism is at its highest but it really is not.

The idea is to show others that dark and light can coexist on the same plain. You are showing just that with love for one another, and you both created something beautiful because of that, with love, true love. As long as you are his only focus and he is your only focus. The two of you will be as one until you shed your earthly vessel.

His distributer even tried to stop him from releasing this song. But he took to social media and fought to get it pushed through. I love the fact that Tom uses his platform and influence to spread awareness on these kinds of things. Not all people have parents that take the time to teach their kids the real history and truths that people have to deal with. Its why 2Pac was always one of my all time favorites, He shed light in the dark corners that the elites tried to keep hidden. And not saying Tom is 2Pac but he uses his influence to do the same. His music has a purpose and that is dope.

As a white man of 53 having grown up in the southern part of Louisiana, I’ve witnessed racism and perhaps at an early age learned some bad habits and expressions that I was ignorant to that would be offensive. I find this song engaging especially with reaction videos from Black Americans, because as you stated in your reactions Tom MacDonald, a white man speaking from if he where black spoke things that you have been thinking your whole life. Lol he does that for all of us by the way. But that being said, so many times I’ve heard that I don’t know what it’s like to be a black man in America, I get it. I agree, I’ll never know what it’s like to be a black man in America. But as a human in America I can look, listen, and imagine just like Tom. We are the same, we just live different perspectives but we live within the same system. ☮️

I spent the past year reading and researching. I thought I knew enough having lived with every race over years in the military. Learning what the phrase "black culture" means relative to ethnic heritage and reflecting on things that happened over the years from a different perspective changed a few things, as much as watching police doming kids with 40mm baton rounds with no apparent need.

I'll be honest as a white guy. This song does highlight what some of us know to be the issues many Black people see as their (for lack of a better term) cross to bear. The problem, as I see it, is still one of communication. I've been told to just shut up and listen but that doesn't end up being productive. For instance, certain theories ascribe racism to local stores for having products on the end caps that cater to a more white clientele. That is then called racist. To me, that is more about economics than racism. If X product sells the most (or you need to sell an excess of a certain product) it goes on the end cap. Race, itself, doesn't play a role. The problem with defaulting to calling that racist is that it creates a divide and makes groups feel put upon or left out. That, simply, stokes the feeling Tom is talking about. Add in the media and elite talking heads pontificating about the ideas Tom is talking about here, and there is a break down between reality and perception. Telling others to "shut up and listen" ends up stifling conversation and all nuance around the issue(s) is lost. When the fact that Blacks are more likely to be in prison is taken at face value, minus any nuance or exploration of why, it becomes a racist statement. Unfortunately, the solution, in my opinion, is then lost because the root causes are lost in the racist rhetoric from both sides. Are inner-city communities prone to more crime? Are poor people less likely to get a fair trial? Are public defenders simply not that adept at giving their clients good representation? Is the break down of the nuclear family part of the problem? Are there a lack of good role models for inner-city kids and young adults? All of those, to me, are potential root issue to a higher incarceration rate. Making the higher rate be only about racism eliminates all those questions as more racism (too often) so I can't perceive a viable solution to solve the incarceration issue (other than stop arresting people for those crimes). Heck, there might even be a discussion to have regarding WHAT people are locked up for, but it is not the only issue in my opinion. I could touch on most of the broad assumptions Tom touches on in this video (and I think he has flirted around the edges of some of these issues in his other songs). I just wish everyone could take a step back, breath, and then come back together and figure out solutions. I'm just afraid that my voice (simply because I am white) is not welcomed. Thanks for the reaction and letting my rant (somewhat )

Backstory: pre-pandemic, Tom & Nova sitting at a pizza parlor preparing to shoot the video for Buttholes. In walks in 2 black guys, the 2nd guy has dreads with yellow frosted tips, the front bangs tying wrapped to the back holding the hair back. Tom comments out loud, 'If I was Black, I would rock that doo'. Thinks to himself, *What an odd thing to say, If I was Black, what would my life be like?* **opens phone, starts taking notes** Tells Nova that he thinks that he has to go to the booth immediately that he has an idea for one of his most important songs. She asks him about the Buttholes video, and the booking, the props, the actors, and the day rate. He tells her that this track is more important, and that to go ahead and call it off but to go ahead and pay them. Fast forward to releasing the video, the independent distribution company said that Apple music, wants him to change the cover art, so he does, then they tell him that Apple is saying that he has violated some terms, and that he needs to change some lyrics. To which Tom is absolutely not. He gets on the phone with Apple, and they have said no such thing. Come to find out 2 people at the distribution company are offended. He gets p*$$ed and gets into a legal dispute to the point that Tom is like, he doesn't care if he doesn't get paid for the track, as long as it gets released. Their standpoint is afraid of being sued. He argued a distribution company takes place of a label, because labels limit people. So Tom goes into the legal battle to reclaim it, and finds a different distribution company, and still released on his target date. Come to find out, they weren't offended in the manner that you think, they didn't want a white man sticking up for blacks because it meant progress in bridging the gap. Trapp Terell, and YellowPain make a diss track after pulling a positive reaction on their reaction channel of Tom. They also do a sample of 4 different reaction channels 3 of which are positive of the message the take the samples and clip it out of context, so it appears they are anti-Tom. 2 weeks later Tom shoots Buttholes with a different concept.

Can't love this reaction enough. This song resonates with me on a lvl of I have worked in 4 states in this great country. I am a subcontractor that has worked in multimillion dollar homes and I have worked in some of the most impoverished areas. Since I come from an area that has a large amount of black people I was always scheduled to work in the black areas when the time came. What I have witnessed in this country is a whole lot of cool white people and a whole lot of cool black people. Of course about every decade or so I will come across someone that is openly racist and that makes no difference what color their skin is. I can say that I am around your kids, I am around your pets, I am in your closet, and I am in your face. In 24 years the worst thing I've heard was from a white cpl telling me they call y'all sreggin, disgusting. And the worst thing a black person ever said to me was "y'all don't even care about us" cause I showed up without a mask. Funniest and most awkward comment I got from a black person was "boy you strong, I'd have to pistol whip yo ass". He was an older gentleman lol. All that being said I have been demonized on social media as a racist for supporting Trump and Q for 4 years. We all get stereotyped and that is intentional. The powers that be are terrified if we unite. Peace and love. ✌♥️🐸

This song, when I first heard it, it made me cry. And watching yall's reaction to this and listening to it again, made me cry all over again. My momma raised us kids that it didn't matter what a person's differences were (skin color, sex orientation, etc) if two people loved each other that's all that mattered. And From what I know of my ancestry that immigrated to America, none of them ever owned slaves. I have a lot of native american and irish heritage. So it does hurt to hear it when people say that ALL white people should be demonized because their ancestors were slave owners. Which is a totally FALSE statement and perception. So many whites died fighting a war to end slavery because of how WRONG it was. Throughout history at some point every race has been a slave to another at some point and it is one of the most awful things to have ever occurred in the history of mankind. I was brought up on, and still wholeheartedly have, Christian beliefs and believe that we are ALL Gods children and should love one another as Christ loves us. My brother when he was a kid told my mom that he didn't understand why we call ourselves white and black, when we are actually peach and brown. lol. I actually loved that and think we are all beautiful shades of peach and brown and wouldn't want to live in a world where we were all the same. Just like how nature has animals of all beautiful colors, we are made the same. I can not stand the fact that people ever discriminate against a person for something they have no control over, Skin pigment, Gender, Disability, Etc. It hurts my heart that black people do or have ever felt the way Tom talks about it in this song. All I can say is I am a person that would stand up and protect anyone being bullied or discriminated against no matter what and I believe we all need to come together and unify as one race, THE HUMAN RACE and go against those trying to divide us. That's how we stop this and make change. Sorry for the long rant. I just feel really strongly about being against RACISM and DISCRIMINATION in any way shape or form towards any group of people, that I have to speak up. I Love yall's channel and your points of view. God Bless you both.

I will say this I am a man that is of mixed race. I am Japanese, Chinese, Korean, North African, Scottish, and English and I have grown up dealing with racism from all sides. I have had people think I am Mexican and call me names and throw slanderous statements at me and then I had people think I was just some tan white dude and I have racism thrown at me because of that. I say this to say that for me I in a way have an odd perspective on this subject. Honestly his saying racism has made me racist is one of the most powerful statements in the song. Both sides have perpetuated and even caused racism to be created in people from other sides. The real issue is everyone wants to play the blame game and not do what is right and just say ok this is what has happened but in order for this to actually be solved I myself have to drop the anger and hate and extend an olive branch. If the person refuses the olive branch then you know you did what you could. So for me this song speak on many different levels that I think someone who considers themselves just on one side does not have. It is a touchy subject and many (Even those who say they are willing to listen) are not willing to actually hear others out and it all comes down to pride. So remember prides comes before your fall.

Between Whiteboy and If I were Black just goes to show we have a long way to go to get better, but if we can see each other's perspective we're on the right track.

I'm mixed Hawaiian/white and my kids are mixed and we live in a very diverse area near south Seattle with very few white people. In fact my husband is pretty much it. I can see both sides of the fence and struggle. It got (and still is) pretty crazy out here with BLM/Antifa but I gotta say that our neighborhood has stood together. I just hope songs like this and whiteboy can reach people with different perspectives. Perspective is key, we're all human. Long comment over, you guys are great!! Edit: I realize that saying diverse while simultaneously saying very few white people is an oxymoron but you prob know what I meant.

I'm in Federal Way. My family is a mix of Native American, Hispanic and White. Both of my son's grew up with friends of every color. It seemed to be a far gone issue until the media started harping on it a few years back.

Agreed, I'm in fed way/burien but my family lives near capital hill. Used to be nice up there, now it's needles, graffiti and human feces. So sad

@@maliasiwel7015 Yeah. The closest I get to downtown is waving from I-5 on my way through. Inslee and Durkan's choices have really made a mess of things. Our neighborhood has been good so far. You're right, we have a terrific police force here.

🤣🤣I know the feeling, I don't go downtown ever anymore. I grew up in black diamond/enumclaw so burien is too close to the city for me. Never thought I'd miss dirt roads and cows.

You know it's fun, as a white man married to a black woman, living in North Carolina,. My wife is the first one to tell her friends/family that I'm the one who constantly hit with racism from them. She's had to get onto them quite a bit. After 7 years of marriage, all of my friends/family love her to death, but I'm still treated like a 3rd class citizen by her people. Here's just a small example. We have 2 kids, a 6 year old girl & a 1 year old boy. Her parents, grandparents, aunts, & uncles haven't been to a single one of our kids birthdays, however, they make it to EVERYONE of her older sisters kids parties that have two black parents. I could honestly careless about how they treat me, but to do that to their grandchildren is just wrong. I enjoyed your prospective & always love a good conversation. You should go check out Brad & Lex reaction to this as well. Much love to you both.

Tom is really good at writing songs that try to see all walks of life’s perspectives. He’s did a few songs about different races and/groups of people.

I agree with Asia even people do not have a racist bone can still not understand the struggle all we can do is stand up when we see injustice and stand with our brothers and sisters. We will never know what it feels like to walk in your skin. Just know there are a lot of us that support that and feel like Tom we see the injustice in things and will stand for change and equality shoulder to shoulder for real!!

Agreed 100%. If you listen closely, a lot of the things he says in this song, he's said the opposite a number of times in other songs. But he is empathetic towards how other cultures feel, which is awesome.
@timweber16953 жыл бұрын
The song was satire. I am not 100% sure, but from what I've read and listened to, he is not necessarily making fun of these things, but making the comment that this is the negative things many blacks believe, but mixed with things that are true as well

I am giving you a SUB! I really appreciate you acknowledging that we cannot completely understand what it is like to be a different race! It hit me! I am a 50 year old white man who grew up very poor! My parents divorced when I was 14. My Mother took a job in Moreno Valley, CA. and the only house we could afford was in the predominantly black area of Edgemont… which should tell everybody something about racial division! There were only two white families in my neighborhood. Spent the next 5 years trying to fit in, listening to gangster rap and dodging bullets. It was extremely difficult! I thank God every day for my black friends that didn’t judge me and had my back! I would not be here today to comment on your reaction if it were not for them! What Asia just said about knocked me on my ass! I had to stop to comment and SUB! Thank you both so much!!! Love ya!❤

Some of that animosity is portrayed to divide us...listen if you go and learn what really happened during the slavery era. There were actually blacks that had black slaves...not saying it's not horrible but there was alot to that era that were not told and is kept from the masses!!!

I heard Tom McDonald on an interview say that one of his steps in his writing process is to share his latest song with his black Neighbors and get their criticism of the song. The criticism could be good or bad but he always takes in their opinion and adjust his song. It's really what just like any other artist would do whether you're a singer, musician or a painter, you always want to receive people's opinion on your latest piece. One thing as an artist you have to take some criticism yeah even if you get your butt hurt. In the long run, it'll just make you stronger.

If you look at the date that song was released, it was around the same time he did ''Straight White Male''. Most likely the goal was to shock both sides of the fence by showing the point of view of a black & white person. Similar to what Joyner Lucas did, but in 2 separate songs (And less biased in my opinion).

Love yall. Amazing. I feel like the most important line that people miss is when he says if he was black the only role models he is shown are rich black rappers pushing guns and drugs and hoes and i feel like its something people dont see. And yes it isnt just black rappers doing it but the point is thats what our youth hear black or white and its a problem in our society. But i was that person saying black people have to take responsibility for the actions and i still believe that but this song did open my eyes to see why black people feel the way they do which breaks my heart. But again i love yalls reactions and keep them coming

I'm not American and we don't have much black/white issues here. I'm not saying we don't have racism here, because unfortunately we do. But it's more towards immigrants from Arabic countries in regard of their religious and cultural differences. So for me it's interesting and bewildering at the same time to hear about the issues Americans have with skin color.
