As far strongman competition, steroids are required to succeed in the sport. but are not what separates the top guys from the thousands of others that never qualified. Do you know how many PED abusers would love to succeed in strongman and suck at it? It takes a lot more than steroids to reach the top. And this is why Bret Hart is the greatest in ring wrestler of all time. In a time of kayfabe, Bret Hart made you second guess whether or not wrestling was fake. He could turn a turd into gold in the ring. What puts Bret ahead of Shawn Michaels is that, when he entered the ropes, all out of ring factors were gone, it was all about the match and making as flawless as possible. Whereas Shawn, as talented as he was, would often put himself above the match, for instance his matches with Vader and Hogan. Yes Hart had diva moments as well, but that was left in the back. Bret Hart was like the Jerry Rice of wrestling and Shawn was like Randy Moss. Yes, Moss was more exciting to watch and had more natural talent, but he would take plays off and even said himself that he only plays when he wants to. Rice on the other hand, was not as naturally gifted, but he honed his craft like no other WR in history, and as soon as he stepped on the field, there was only the game and nothing else.

I mean this man is doing SSP flips before it was cool in Wrestling. He's really like a prototype of guys his size who can do flippy shits. Yet he didn't capitalized on that. His strikes were awkward, especially his kicks. His stance is weird. His walk and hulking up is worse than Ultimate Warrior's. Yet there's so much potential to him but when like 5 years had passed and there's still no development y'know that you're just not really meant for Wrestling. Which sucks. I have him as World Champ on Fire Pro right now so at least I get to honor his wasted potential.

As a Canadian, it definitely would have been awesome to see Magee become the star Vince envisioned he'd be. Although once Vince has his champion, we know how overbooked, pushed and dominant they become until most fans get sick of them. It's all moot now but somehow I imagine that if Magee became "The Mega Man" (which would also have been cool since I am a huge fan of the Mega Man series), Vince would have likely advertised Magee as an American to seamlessly transition people from one red, white and blue character to another. Vince is as patriotic as they come and especially during the 80s and early 90s, the majority of foreign wrestlers were heels because USA good, everywhere else bad. Magee must have really stunk for Vince to give up on him as other bigger guys would be pushed even though they offered little beyond size and perhaps becoming a monster for go figure; a Hulk Hogan, or other top guys to slay. So who thinks Magee is going to get inducted into the 2020 WWE Hall of Fame? Just me?

Every time there's a discussion about Magee online, it seems that generally the most clueless of wrestling fans tend to comment. If you can wade through the 25,000 HE LOOKS LIKE KENNY OMEGA AF SMH 100 PERCENT SIGN comments from millenials, then you get the TOM MAGEE DIDN'T HAVE WHAT IT TOOK comments. It's 80's pro wrestling, does anybody remember how that worked? If you can make Lex Luger into a star, Tom Magee could EASILY be a star. Flair Carried Sting to good matches. Hawk & Animal wouldn't sell and were wacked out on cocaine just doing power moves. Hulk Hogan did 4 moves tops. You could've just painted Magee up as Ultimate Warrior and he could've done as good of a job as Jim Helwig, probably 10X better actually. I'm pretty sure there's more to this story behind the scenes as opposed to what happened in the ring. Lex Luger was a much worse wrestler than Magee by a mile, and they made Luger into a legend. Sure, Magee was no where near Flair, Steamboat, Macho or Bret Hart but he could easily be on par with the in-ring work of guys like Sid, Luger, Nash and Hogan. I mean, you guys think that Mongo McMichael could be a Horseman, but they couldn't get Magee over???????

I am STILL shocked that match got booked.... Like WHO THE FUCK THINKS "Ahhh... The Butcher vs. Zeus! That's masterpiece in the making of I've ever heard of one! Sure to put thousands of highly interested asses in the seats!" Like what the FUCK is wrong with some of these bookers!!!?

There is a plausible reason for the Magee/McGhee spelling error. At about the time that Tom Magee was arriving in the WWF, there was a wrestler working the NWA Florida circuit named Scott McGhee. McGhee got a small push in Florida, winning the tag and Florida titles, and then pretty much disappeared (although he apparently worked for WWE as a jobber in... oh my... 1985-87, not that I remember this - I do remember his Florida run). But anyone in the business at the time would have been forgiven if they crossed up WWF's Tom Magee with Florida's Scott McGhee (especially if they'd seen McGhee work as a prelim guy in WWE). And if that's what helped keep this match hidden, then it was frankly the biggest thing Scott McGhee ever did in wrestling. :)

That match wasnt awful! It was great! Also you spelled Hogan's last name Bollea wrong. Also, Vince never told Magee about any of his plans for him. Tom never knew until this tape was found, and learned about how legendary that match was, and Vince's plans for him.

I see you had a clip of the match. Why not show us the whole match?

Bret would still rate Tom Magee in his top 1000 wrestlers, but not Triple H.

So really, what's the big deal about this particular match? Was it that we can't see it? (yes I know WWE is about to show it) , or because Hart did business for the guy? McGee just washed out, so he's nothing all that special in the Wrestling world. What's the big deal?
@danieltroche60195 жыл бұрын
Basically that Hart hated jobbing to basically an unknown that was getting a push that wasnt ready for the big time. I don't know if you watch these "shoot" interviews you'll learn that many wrestlers had that issue.

So did you do any of your own research or did you just take all your info from Colt Cabanas video of the same subject?
@peterjohnjoseph5 жыл бұрын
DId you watch more than 5 minutes of the video, or did you just start typing because you felt the need to? He clearly credits Colt's podcast for having the most info on the subject. Colt's video is a clip from his podcast from awhile back. He released it as a clip because the tape was found on the 29th. Thats also why this video and several others have been made.

Yeah. I added some detail to fill out Magee's background because I feel like Colt's podcast was a little light on Magee as a person. I also credited Colt and Meltzer since that is where a majority of the info on the match itself came from, but I also used posts from old Wrestling Forums and Bret's Autobiography. And since the video finally surfaced I added a good amount of detail on that. I also covered some of the theories on why the tape was so obscure/rare. It is obviously going to be similar to Colt's podcast since its the same topic, but consider this video an unoffical "sequel".

Boella, LOL. It's Terry Bollea. Cool video though.

Vince always tells guys he is gonna give them the belt. Mr Kennedy, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, Mustafa Ali, just to name a few guys that he changed his mind on at the last second.

As someone who does karate and jujitsu I can't grasp why couldn't Tom just base his style around a brawler or shoot style like he could have been a early version of dan severn or ken shamrock like in martial arts you train for fighting scenarios just transfer some stuff to the ring like don't actually whale on the guy but make like he was
@Realest6365 жыл бұрын
cholewars yeah I’ve always wondered this myself. You would think he would take to wrestling like a fish to water.
@3Bros0015 жыл бұрын
Vince(& wrestlers) back then probably thought it would hurt someone in the ring. Now it's a no brainer.
@theamericandreamdave5 жыл бұрын
Shooters or Hookers are more likely to be terrible professional wrestlers. When your are legit your are thought to protect yourself always in professional wrestling your are asked to do things which is the exact opposite of your trained instinct. That is why Kurt Angle is such a unique talent.

cholewars if brad reaighans trained him it would have been a different career. Brad would have made him be a shooter with Inokis NJPW. Inoki loved shooters.
