He says, "But I'm ready." Wrong. You're never ready for parenthood the first time. You can be a great parent, but until you actually have children, you aren't ready. Just like any other leadership position, you can never be ready until you actually do it. You can say with authority, "I'm ready" for the 2nd and subsequent child, but for the first, nope. That's like someone given their first ship command. "I'm ready for it." No you aren't. You can do it. But you can't be ready until you are actually in command.

the anxiety stems from two ways: whether the parents will be good enough for their child, or more tragically if their child will be able to survive to birth: remember back in Season 1 where one of the officers had to have their child Transported out of her mothers womb because her cranial ridges threatened to tear her uterine walls, only for this to cause a life-threatening chemical imbalance in the childs' biology.

While I don't hate Neelix as much as others do, you have a point about his cooking. But maybe in the 24th century none of them could cook so they didn't have a choice. Also they wouldn't know how to prepare food they've never seen before. I'd trust him around the baby though.

This is a bit of a story, so pls bear with me....No amount of advice on earth could ever prepare someone for parenthood!! (Anyone who’s been a parent would agree). It’s funny...because I’m an openly gay man, being a dad was the furthest thing from my mind (I did want to be a dad, but when I was older) when I was in my early 20’s (I’m now 51), but after meeting my husband 10 days after my 20th birthday, back in December 1988, I was in for a rude awakening! What 20 year old man, let alone a gay man (back then, it was illegal for a gay person to get married or have a child by adoption or surrogate) thinks about kids? I was just looking for someone to share my life with, someone to love (I wasn’t your typical 20 year old guy, I wasn’t interested in being a player, and sleeping with as many people as I could, at all, I always knew I wanted to be in a committed, monogamous, and loving long term relationship). Well...we met on December 10th...I was desperate to start living life as a gay man (remember, back then, there was no internet, and homophobia was rampant), so when I met my hubby, it was indeed love at first sight (we met through an old fashion dating agency...I’d already met many, many guys, none of which were a match). He, a newly arrived refugee to Canada (from El Salvador), and I, a young man about to start university (I took a year off to work FT, so I would have any student debt), and absolutely desperate to live the live I’d dreamed about for so long. Our first date I spent the night (I has done so with a few of the many guys I had already been matched up with, and while desperate, I wasn’t going to settle for second best, I NEVER allow desperation to dictate my actions), awoke the next morning after a wonderful night of unbridled passion, just watching him sleep, thinking to myself “he’s the one”. What I didn’t know was, he had a girlfriend (which he dumped immediately after meeting me), and had fled his country not just because of the civil war, but so he too could explore his sexuality freely (in his country, at the time, getting caught with another man normally resulted in your extremely violent death, a chance he didn’t want to take). Anyways...we hit it off immediately, and I hate wasting time. He had been looking for a roommate at the time, so on the 17th, exactly a week after we met, I moved in with him in his very large bachelor apt (it was over 750sq feet). I rented a truck, told my family the truth, which they actually took pretty well, especially since it was a week before Xmas, and helped me move out and in with my new hubby. Now...during all this, I notice many pictures of a young boy in his place. At first, he told me it was just pictures of him, and I believed it, because it looked just like him. It wasn’t until 6 weeks later that he finally admitted that it was really his son! When he was 15, he was sexually assaulted by his family housekeeper, a woman 10 years his senior! I asked if if wanted to immigrate him, and he said no, not for a long time, and that was that, or so I thought. Immigration Canada is HORRIBLE, having lost all his paperwork applying to become a permanent resident, an then a citizen (you had to be a resident before applying for citizenship). It took him 8 years to finally get his citizenship...then he asked me if I would be willing to have his son move in with us...I was 28, but was still caught off guard...but how could I say no? Besides, I always wanted to be a dad, and a year later, I was, just not legally. It took years before I was able to legally adopt him as my own. He arrived here on his 9th birthday, fully aware of his dad’s relationship with me. All I can say is parenthood is the most rewarding, and the most heartbreaking thing anyone can do. I’m now a grandpa to two beautiful boys as well, which we spoil rotten...but if you’re thinking about having children?.....don’t think, just do it! Your life becomes beautifully chaotic, and a joyful chaos you can’t imagine living without every again. The day our son left home for collage, then marriage, was both the happiest, and most painful times of our lives. We did consider adoption, but when our son had twin boys shortly after starting university (he’s too much like his dad!), we suddenly had 2 babies to care for, as he got sole custody (she was a one night stand, and wanted nothing to do with the boys), we became their legal guardians, so our son could finish university (top of his class too, now an absolutely brilliant computer engineer making a fortune, thank god!) without worry or distraction. Now? We’re a family of 5 guys and one girl (our daughter-in-law, who’s parents abandoned her from birth, was never adopted, so we just call her our daughter, she’s such a lovely, beautiful girl, inside and out.... she is brilliant, and started university from all the grants she was offered, where she met our son). Now our grandkids live with their dad and his wife, be we still see them every day, we babysit as they both work FT...I just can’t let them go. From the second you hold them for the first time, children will melt your heart, and break it many, many times..so stop reading this, and start making babies (if yours straight, getting there is half the fun!).

I read most of your long comment but about your point at the beginning that "No amount of advice can prepare you for parenthood", it's true that you can't be 100% prepared, but even that is advice in itself that parents should know so I think you would agree that not all advice is bad. Although it would be annoying to receive a lot of it as they did, and Tom and B'Elanna aren't necessarily great at receiving feedback.
