Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Күн бұрын

The album, Wildflowers, released in 1994, is commonly vaunted as Tom Petty’s most personal, most heartfelt, and most revealing artistic statement of his career. Recorded over the course of two years and originally intended to be a two-disc album, it was perhaps the most creative period in his life.
The release of Wildflowers & All The Rest finally gathers together all 25 songs from the original recording sessions - the 15 songs from Wildflowers, plus the 10 songs that were left off the original release.

My dad died a week ago today, and my last memory with him was screaming our hearts out to this song while driving late at night, I personally believe that he is the biggest Tom Petty fan of all time. And every single night since that day I’ve stayed up all night and just listened to this over and over again. Man I miss Tom Petty;and god damn I miss my Dad. LLP 🕊️ 09/16/24

I owe Tom so much. In my lowest times of my life he was right there. Comforting, making sense of the things I was going through. I will be forever grateful for his music, especially Wildflowers. I tear up when considering it all.

“Wildflowers & All The Rest” is the best thing to happen in 2020. We need Tom’s music now more than ever. This is my favorite song by my favorite artist. This is truly the song I put on repeat for hours at a time. I listen to this masterpiece everyday. Thank you to the Petty Family, and to the Heartbreakers for all the love. It's 1am and tears are rolling down my cheeks. Your words "I'm so tired of being tired, sure as night will follow day, most things I worry about never happen anyway" resonate so hard in me... All your albums are excellent you never did a bad one. Hope you are happy where you are.You are and always will be a treasure and one of the best artists in the world ! I dreamed of meeting you but it's too late you're already gone I hope that one day, in another world we can finally get to know each other... I miss you so much... I feel like I lost an old friend... @@marialane1805 it's because I've been listening to Tom Petty since I was 8 years old (I'm 19 now). He accompanied me for 11 years and I hope he will do it for a long time. I had several times very hard times to live and each time his songs gave me back the smile and gave me hope. He was also the one who pushed me to learn to play guitar. I love him so much I wanted to pay him a tribute in my own way with this comment.

I'm a lover of most types of music and I identify as a rocker but, as a young man of 21 in '94, I got my first brand new vehicle so naturally I put this bumping stereo system in with as close to surround sound as I could get. Bought Wildflowers for You Don't Know How It Feels and to cut to the chase, that system brought this song to even more life than it already had & brought out notes and sounds that immediately made this one of my top tracks from this and many albums from this wonderful & amazing artist. Thanks for the songs & memories Tom and thanks for giving my little story a read y'all! ~ Scott

'Bout 15 years ago I went to see Tom at Jones Beach in NYC. I "liked" him well enough and really just went to hang out. I'd never seen him live before and frankly didn't think it'd be all that great - I was so wrong. So towards the last few songs of the night he tells the crowd something like "we don't always play this one, but its a special song for us and we think you'll like it" and they went into this song... I've been to ALOT of concerts (ALOT) but this was something truly special, I'm happy/lucky to have been in the audience that night. ✌

I have always loved this song. I also love all the previously unreleased songs that are on Wildflowers & All The Rest. But I had the most unexpected reaction to the 4 CD album. I also felt that Wildflowers, which I bought in 1994, is the most personal album Tom Petty put out, and also one of the best. And after more than 20 years of listening to it, I can't really listen to the new one. I bought it. But I love the original " Wildflowers" and " She's The One", which I think is also a very personal album, as well as a movie soundtrack; I personally can't listen to the new one. I highly recommend it; but it turned out not to be for me. Imagine my surprise! I love you, Tom Petty, and I miss you so. Your family and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and Ryan Ulate have done a fantastic job of honoring you and keeping your profound legacy alive. I would never have gotten over my grief without " Tom Petty: An American Treasure". And to his family and bandmates: All that you have given to the fans is SO generous, and SO meaningful. Thank you. I would still be crying 3-4 hours a night, except for you.

I associate the song with Tom’s life and death very strongly. I have issues with anxiety and hypervigilance, and I always empathized with and took comfort in the last lines: ”I’m so tired of being tired/sure as night will follow day/most things I worry ‘bout/never happen anyway.” I was a little ways into a period of my life where a number of things I worried about - and some I never saw coming - did start happening, when Tom, in terrible pain from his hip, erred with his meds and passed away. I still love the line, but it has a different meaning for me now, and it doesn’t console me any more. 😓

Adding to my comment: I love the live versions of songs from " Wildflowers", which is one of the CD's in the 4-CD version of " Wildflowers & All That". I love that some of Tom Petty's hilarious sense of humor was included. When Tom Petty introduces the song: " To Find A Friend", which is about a guy who had a mid-life crisis and leaves his wife and kids, anyway Tom Petty's introduction to the song was HILARIOUS!!!! I was going through a bad divorce when the original " Wildflowers" came out, so I've always just skipped the song. But Tom Petty's saying that the most interesting thing about the song is that it's about a guy who leaves his wife and kids and drinks a lot, during a mid-life crisis, made me laugh SO HARD. Because every male musician, and male musician's dog has written a song about male mid-life crises; so that couldn't possibly be the most interesting part of the song. At least that's how I personally interpreted it. If you've never seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live, you've missed out on a lot, I believe. I never got to see them live. A bunch of radio broadcasts recordings have recently come out, that I suspect are bootlegs, but I love hearing Tom Petty talking to what was probably fairly small audiences, at FM radio stations back in the day. Ordinarily I wouldn't buy anything I thought was a bootleg, but I have bought every album Tom Petty, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever made, since his passing, and I believe he wouldn't mind. On one such album, in the middle of a great concert he says, very deadpan: " You guys are nuts!" And the whole audience cheers. And they were! Talk about enthusiasm and love for the band!! Great music, great audiences who didn't hold back. Not edited at all, which makes me feel like I'm there with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live, something I never got to do.

I’m so tried of being tired. And then he returns to an old an probably dysfunctional relationship. And I think the Indian that turned out the light was god. And the light was Tom. The really good songs are usually meloncohly or even sad. The singer needs depth of painful life experience to convey the meaning. In this manner we live part of their life and they write vague enough lyrics that we may appropriate them to our lives.

"Crawling Back to You" by Tom Petty is a song about returning to a familiar, yet complicated relationship. The protagonist is waiting on the side of the road to meet someone in Los Angeles. Despite the difficulties and hardships they have faced in the past, he keeps coming back to this person. It seems that the relationship is a source of comfort, even though it's not always easy. The chorus "Ooh, I keep crawling back to you" emphasizes this idea of being drawn back even when it may not be the best choice. The verse about the ranger and the chambermaid suggests that the protagonist has been through some tough times with this person. The fact that she lets him in despite her initial surprise indicates that they have a history together. The bridge suggests that the protagonist believes that everything will be okay if he believes in this person. It's almost as if he is seeking validation from her. The following verse about being caught up in a barroom fight and an Indian shooting out the lights suggests that the protagonist is living a gritty, rough life. The final verse, however, suggests that he is tired of all the drama and wants to find a sense of peace. Despite this desire, he keeps crawling back to this person. In the end, the repetition of the chorus suggests that the protagonist is unable to break free from this complicated relationship. He continues to return to this person, despite the costs involved😢

Absolutely. Tom Petty knew how to pick the best of the Best musicians.

I can’t even breathe when I think that Tom Petty is no longer here. How could this happen? It is not supposed to be this way. Tom Petty was supposed to live longer than all of us.

@@bobwowk8440 I totally agree. You had to be the best for Tom's discerning ear. But I also think Benmont knew at an early age he wanted to play with Tom and kept following him around like a little brother. I love how Tom, Mike, and Benmont found each other at such a young age. Like they were brothers or band mates in another lifetime born in Gainesville so they could find each other again.
