I have to agree that the DK mine cart roller coaster feels like the ride that's going to carry Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country. But its looking like Super Nintendo World is more alive than anything Disney has ever created. Even the Power Up Bands can be used with Nintendo consoles (3DS, Switch and Wii U). That's a bigger selling point than using Magicband + together with Amazon's NSA listening device.

The one thing I give Universal a lot of credit for is they are aggressively innovating new ride systems. Forbidden Journey, Gringotts, and now Mario are all industry firsts. The upcoming Donkey kong ride may be the most impressive yet. Their plan for Zelda, although still blue sky, is incredible. Also Universal lags way behind Disney in Family friendly attractions, so I think that was their overall goal with this. That's why Yoshi is so slow and Mario Kart is not intense. Universal has plenty of thrill rides and simulators, what they need are family friendly rides with practical effects. When you look at Universal's long term strategy to rival Disney, I think they made the right choices here, and I think it's going to be a massive success.

I think making a Mario Kart attraction is tough given that such a wide range of people play the games, so you have to make a ride accessible to everyone. I honestly think what we got was a good outcome (given I haven’t actually rode it). It looks like a fun little ride for everyone with quality set pieces and a great queue. It’s also good we are getting the DK coaster for a more thrilling option, can’t wait to see that thing actually jump the rails, should be an insane pov. One thing is for sure though, this is smoking Disney compared to anything they have made in recent years. Nintendo is a power house property, and this land alongside the Mario movie actually looking good, Disney should be terrified.

Thank you very much for this detailed and honest review. My family and I are very excited when we saw the initial footage from last year, we are a very Nintendo household with every game for Zelda and Metroid in particular. Now that we have heard your thoughts on Osaka's version of this land, we have tempered our expectations especially since we will be visiting the Hollywood version since it is closest to us. In all honestly it may become like Wizarding World for us (since none of us do well on screen heavy rides) and become a place to hang out and eat more so that ride the rides. We are looking forward to playing around with the POW blocks and such but we'll have to see what those lines will be like. Hopefully this land will as time goes on especially if the planned Donkey Kong and rumored Zelda expansions show up in Orlando (no hopes for Hollywood unless they acquire more land). Appreciate all of your honest reviews and am looking forward to your next one.

Tom ,you hit the nail on the head. Art over CGI. In fact, I will go a step further and say painted and sculpted art with black light over monochromatic resin. Disney is over thinking things with their rides. A 5th park at Disney that has tracked rides based on their best animated movies would be killer and I bet those rides would be in the 5 - 10 million range vs 30 - 100 million.

I kinda picture a quick-moving trackless ride when I think of a Mario Kart ride. I think of the faster-paced RotR scenes. They could've figured out some visual illusions to make you feel more like you're racing. And the "race" would be against the other riders w/ no characters so everything is physical and you could use some sort of interactive element to make physical objects move and such

It looks to me like the Mario Kart ride is less Kart and more shooting, which is too bad. My hopes for the Yoshi ride was that they would extend it into the Donkey Kong land. It could look into that land as well, or if they didn't want to mix Yoshi and DK thru could just make it enclosed. I think you nailed it with Nintendo meddling. I know they insisted on interactivity with the Mario ride. I also wouldn't be surprised to find out that they insisted on making the rides to Japanese tastes, or at least to what they thought the Japanese tastes would be. They are into photo ops and shops at about the same level as rides. I think Universal may not have fought back enough...

Love these honest reviews! Their candid and casual nature makes them feel like a conversation. Couldn't agree more with Tom on the interactivity; Galaxy's Edge is such a boring, static land because nothing moves or changes. The Star Wars datapad games don't change the way characters interact with you, and they don't create any tangible effects. While Galactic Starcruiser certainly solves many of these problems, it is locked behind a steep paywall. The wearables at Super Nintendo World, on the other hand, are much more affordable and accessible to all. Plus, those who don't choose to pay for a wristband can still enjoy watching the actions and results of those who do, unlike Galactic Starcruiser.

That Mario kart ride looks so unfortunate. I wish they made it somewhat fast. I am one that loves dark rides even more so than most coasters, but above all I love theming and a slow moving dark ride just doesn’t fit the bill. A radiator spring racers/ test track system would be a bit better but I think they should’ve put more innovation behind the ride system than the AR. If there was a new exciting ride system that doesn’t have the interaction seems better than a misused system with a lackluster AR element.

I'm sure Mario Kart would be better as AR technology advances and if they decide to add more physical elements to it, but to me at least it should've been a Luigi's Mansion ride. Also, if Mario Kart was a more thrilling ride (like RSR or Hagrid's, what I think it should've been), then Yoshi's Adventure would work a lot better as a tamer secondary attraction rather than two having slow-paced family attractions, but I blame Nintendo for making the Mario Kart ride the way it is. Even if the rides are just okay at best, the land beats any of the newer Disney lands (Pandora being the sole exception).

That should have been the blue print, Disney should do what they did with Dinosaur, make a better version of the Universal ride. I think the mario kart ride system and the whole mix with VR works in Japan but I don't think it will translate well into the states because the two societies are very different in what makes us tick. People in the US react positively to more immersive environments without the use of screens and adding that thrill factor ( Speed, drops etc..) . I think that is why Jaws the ride and king kong were such great attractions. Furthermore I think Nintendo has more say in the type of attraction and how it will be done rather than universal.

I think that is also a big issue for Epic Universe overall, the hype/expectations are through the roof right now. This thing has to change the industry and then some, for it to live up to fan expectations. The expectation game is Universal's BIGGEST enemy with this new park imho. Much like Mario Kart, will Epic Universe fall short of those fan expectations? we will see, but its a huge hurdle to say the least.

What makes this even more strange is that I rode a Mario Kart in VR, on a motion seat with pedals and a steering wheel in Toyko in 2018 at the former VR Zone. It was one of the best VR experiences I have ever had. Reaching up to grab a question block with you hands and then literally throwing not just pressing a button to release was so well done. Why would Nintendo and Universal just super charge that experience? Makes you wonder who is making these decisions as they really missed the mark on this one. Sure how they are not just blindly building the same ho hum ride in the USA but they probably are. VR Theme Parks are really going to shake things up so shocked we are not seeing more physicial sets.

I think translating that experience to a ride, where you can serve thousands per guest per hour is going to be hard. You have the Milemium falcon smuggler's run ride at disneyland, and I think it kind of falls flat with the driving/steering mechanics. If it was a driving experience, then I think you'd need a motion simulator, and those would cost a lot more than a tracked ride as well.

I agree with you completely about the Mario Kart ride, Tom. I do also think it isn’t really Universal’s fault because they were probably pressured into making a Mario Kart ride because everyone wanted it and expected it. The issue is that nobody exactly knew how a Mario Kart ride would even work functionally (I honestly never thought it could) but Universal tried to make it work and this is what we’re left with. The general audience will be disappointed but you can’t really blame Universal for everyone having huge expectations for something that barely seems feasible.

"General audience will be disappointed". Y'all are so out of touch with the majority of the market. This IS what the general audience wanted: an extremely accessible ride that incorporates game elements like the source material. This is what Nintendo envisioned, and the general public has completely eaten it up. Not to mention the technology to pull off the AR is incredibly impressive, so even if it's not what you "theme park junkies" wanted it's still nice to appreciate the engineering that went into it. But nope, it's all "wah wah not thrilling, wah wah video game".

@Αρκαδικό αστέρι What y'all can't seem to understand is that people like you aren't the main audience. Universal is pretty obviously moving towards a more family friendly approach, which also aligns with Nintendo's brand. Sure they could make a fast ride, but then many younger guests could not ride. They also envisioned a game feature on the ride, to go along with the gaming function of the entire land. Combine that with the AR, and it's just not really possible to make a super thrilling experience. Despite that, Super Nintendo World, and Mario Kart by extension, has been a smash hit so far in Japan. The accessibility attracts people of all ages and invites families to bring every member along. And don't even try to lie to yourself about the video game aspect; there is no way you can name another place where you can play an AR game, while on a moving vehicle, and inside some amazing physical sets. It's more than just another "screen ride"; hell, it even won a prestigious award for innovating technology. That doesn't come out of stuff like Toy Story Midway Mania, as many have compared it to,. With that said, it's okay to be disappointed by the lack of thrills, not everyone can be pleased. But you should just accept that fact and enjoy something else, instead of continuing to bad mouth it just because it didn't fit _your_ expectations. Even if you are disappointed, there is still lots to do with playing games, exploring the area, and admiring the incredible rock work and set design in the land and in the ride. It's okay that not everything in Universal is big thrills.

Donkey Kong ride capacity is going to be horrible. Its a wild mouse coaster on a short track. 45-50 secs ride time if that.

Oy. The land sounds like a lot of work to enjoy. For a person who doesn't like video games this place is likely a pass for me. when I eventually visit Universal Orlando.

Slight correction: Peach doesn't bake the cake as a reward. Mario arrives at the castle in the first place because Peach invited him over for cake only then to find that she had been kidnapped.

Will still draw people to the parks and will still have long waits for many years to come... so goal accomplished by the park I suppose. I’ve been on the rides several times, they are both OK. They are fun but nothing great. Not worth the wait time. Hopefully the Donkey Kong ride at USJ will be better

I just left the Bowser ride at Universal California. What a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! Literally one of the worst rides at the park. I enjoyed everything except this. People camped out for that? Waited in line 3 hours for that?.wow. almost everyone who exited the ride was saying the same thing "I spent two hours in line for that?!" I won't say how but I was able to walk right up to the front of the line on opening day and walked by everyone looking miserable in the line. We had to wait 5-10 min to get on ride and that seemed eternal. I feel bad for the 2-3 hour people. And to get on that stupid ride? Wow. Do yourself a favor. Do not waste more than 5 minutes waiting for this ride. If possible don't even get on it. Trust me.

28:50 "Mario Kart is an absolute failure". OK, Im adding u as a sub. That's 100% correct and Tom is being extremely honest with Mario Kart ride. I have ridden it and I so agree. This ride should never have been AR. This should have been a high speed ride. Period. It's sooooo disappointing. And since it's the core of the land, and the Yoshi ride is worse than people mover, the land itself is just mediocre.

23:20 THIS right here is the reason why the Kart ride is a low tech 1950's Mr Toad Wild ride. I've been on it. Twice. If the AR is off (and it's commonly off) they already meh ride is a headache. SOOOO disappointing that Mario Kart ride is the ride they made vs a high speed dark ride like Radiator Springs. Trust me folks, this is ride a huge disappointment. And I love Nintendo!

@@UPNT are the animatronics so bad? I’ve not ridden the Jurassic Park rides in the states, but I rode both the one in Japan and the one in Singapore and I absolutely love those rides. This is coming from someone that really isn’t a big fan of the drop at the end of a water ride as well... the theming and animatronics were so awesome for me
