@@itsjemmabond Well for starters, in this adaptation, Tom and Becky look nothing like what they should look like. Also, why did they change this scene? In the book, Mr. Dobbins was trying to find out who tore his anatomy book, not who broke a slate and Tom was totally innocent and not involved. That's why his volunteering to take a paddling to spare Becky was so noble.

Well how many movies have you ever seen where they did it EXACTLY like the book? From a time standpoint, that's materially impossible. It may be possible for a TV Series like "War and Peace", "Lonesome Dove", or "Band of Brothers"; but, for a single movie like you're talking about there is absolutely no way any production could include every nuance in a book like "The Adventurers of Tom Sawyer". It would take much more than the two hours of a movie....and that's a stretch considering today it's industry standard to bring a movie in at well under two hours.

So, only 2 states have fully banned it in all schools, and 31 states have banned it in public schools. I wish you were right, but we have a ways to go to get to that reality.

I have read that it was common, in the 19th century, for naughty pupils to get caned, or whipped. Reminds me of the old tradition of nuns, in early part of the 20th century, especially-they, too, were especially known for caning disobedient pupils, in Catholic elementary schools back in the day.

+Aimee Doyle I don't know about the Victorian times, but in the 1970s many schools had a policy that girls should only be caned on the hand, though caning them on the bum was perfectly legal and did happen in some schools. One example was in a London school in 1976 in which a 15-year-old girl got four strokes of the cane on her bum for playing truant. Initially they were going to cane her on the hand but she refused to hold her hand out, so the headmaster and a female teacher grabbed hold of her to stop her struggling while another female teacher caned her on the bum.
