I met Tom back in 1987 during the 3rd stage tour at Alpine Valley Music Theater. The short version of the story.... It was Sunday morning and I got a tip what resort Boston was staying at, so I went for the slight chance of meeting some of the band. I talked with drummer Jim Masdea after breakfast. Then went for a walk. I had taken my Rockman amp face plate off and put it in my back pocket just in case I found Tom. From a distance it looked a little like him walking around the resort grounds with his little boy when I approached him. He was polite but a little cool & distant, then I pulled out my Rockman face plate to show him, he got this huge smile and we had a nice talk, have a picture with him. Having a Rockman he knew I was a guitar player, then he got real serious and asked me if I was at the show last night? I said... "Tom I've been to all 3 shows now" ... "Really? all 3 shows? ... "Yes Tom I love your music" "Well thanks for the support" Then with a very serious look on his face, he asked... "How did it sound? Now here is a guy who the last 3 nights had played in front of over 30,000 fans at each show, and he's asking me how it sounded. I told him great, and offered some of my observations. In his presence I felt that he was a kind gentle spirit. We said goodbye and shortly after he was showing his young son how a boat propeller works. His 'rock star' clothing was a light blue T-shirt, dark blue shorts, white socks & gym shoes, as plainly dressed as one can be. Meeting Tom Scholz was one of the top highlights of my life :)

HeRacesTheSun Lucky. I’ve wanted to meet Tom Scholz forever. I’m almost 20 years old and yet I’ve been raised old school. Boston was the first band I remembered listening to. I have several rockman products and it sounds great. If I met him I would have my one moment to know him as the guy behind Boston and then get to know him as just a regular guy.

Your welcome, I wish now I would have written the long version. A few days earlier before meeting Tom, my 2 brothers were Golfing at Alpine Valley and when putting on a green closer to the stage, they heard the Boston pipe organ. They called me, I raced up there, and all 3 of us easily walked through the theater front gate, met a woman carrying a box of fruit & veggies down the steps, it was dinner for the band. We went past a rude sound guy, then sat in the 2nd row, the only 3 spectators there, and watched the sound check. Tom wasn't there yet, big T as they called him. Brad sang Amanda impersonation Bob Dylan, he had the band laughing so hard at times, they couldn't play their instruments. Just us 3 sitting there in the whole place watching the casual sound check, and the next night there were 30,000+ energetic fans, including us. Days later at that resort, after having brunch and meeting Jim Masdea, my girlfriend & I just started walking out towards the rental condos, and I saw this thin taller guy in the distance, and started teasing my girlfriend "Hey, I think that's Tom Scholz, but I knew it wasn't. We got closer and I had her sold that it really might be Tom, she was buying it, I was having fun, that is until we got even closer... Oh my God I think that really is Tom Scholz! And it was :)

I always thought Tom Scholz was something of a recluse. You get that frequently with the scientifically inclined. He thought the odds of making it in music with top 40 material was a one in a million shot. I would think the likelihood of getting the opportunity you had to speak to him and show him that you were a fan & fellow musician who had purchased his equipment would REALLY be one in a million.

Rick Beato does a video breakdown of "More Then A Feeling" on his channel. He goes into detail on how complex this song actually is. Tom played most of the instruments, mixed, produced and engineered the album. Absolutely phenomenal musician AND engineer, and humble to boot. He's definitely One-In-A-Million!

@Big B Kenobi You asked the right question. Answer: Tom (The Genius) couldn’t match the material of the first and second records. That’s the real reason, as you know Mr. Kenobi. There are a lot of myths and half truths concerning Boston. Great, great albums - at least the first two. After that? Not so much. And the original band was the true Boston. Tom, Brad, Sib, Barry and Fran were the guys who put Boston on the road to riches. And Tom (The Genius) trashes them every chance he gets even though Brad and Sib are sadly gone. That is the REAL Boston. If you saw them anytime after 1980 you were basically watching a Boston cover band, especially in the past 20 years. Those of us who saw the original band know what they were really about - greatness, both on record and in live performance.

I grew up in the 70s. I was a good athlete and before every tennis match I would listen to Foreplay/Long Time to psych me up to play! I was undefeated my Senior year! Thank you Tom and Boston!

i was a draftsman as were called in those days and remember the day everyone in our dept started yelling that "Tom,s record is being played on BCN",at first i thought it was a joke as all knew Tom was making a record but it was no joke and he was on his way. The good old days at Polaroid that failed and but Tom is still going strong. Great memories

I'm autistic, but i'm also gifted, and I recognize Scholz as beyond brilliant. It was a shock to me that he didn't know how new and great was the sound he had invented. Tom, here's hoping you realize it now. I was 16 when the first album came out and I couldn't stop listening to it! I memorized every single note, every sound. Everything. Brad's vocals were perfect. The band was so lucky to get him. I believe Brad was the only singer to have talent and ability equal to the excellence of what Tom was putting together. A perfect storm. All good wishes!

What a story and man. I just graduated from college at 58. I was 13/14 when Boston hit and if you weren't around then--you could never really understand how HUGE...HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE their first album was. So, the fact not only is he one of the main and greatest rock musicians in history--he also went to MIT with an engineering degree! That pretty much means--he's one of the smartest people in the world--throw inm he made the biggest selling debut rock album of ALL time (if you throw in the population in 76--nothing can come CLOSE to the record's sales to this day. NOTHING--not even the Beatles. And he;'s SO down to Earth!!!??? I LOVE TOM SHOLZ FOREVER!!! He brought so much happiness and joy to me when I was a young man....I must play "more than a felling" on guitar at least once a week, to this day (oh--I now teach guitar at my university)

Here's where I am. Born in 63 so I grew up with this music. I loved it when it first came out. It got so much airtime (a testament to how great it is) that I went 25 years not hating it but just had enough. Didn't need to hear it for the one millionth time. Now that I'm older and more mature, I now appreciate Boston's music more than ever. Tom is brilliant and the band was a great compliment to his ideas. Brad Delp is also 1 in a million. Rock-on Boys!

I was 13 years old in 1976. I was at my friend's house. We were outside sitting in his VW van getting stoned and listening to KSTO FM radio station. There were a bunch of us in the van, the side door was open. More Than a Feeling came on, and it was the most outta sight song we had ever heard! Then Karen Gregory put her arms around me and kissed me, my very first kiss. Man, it was groovy! In my opinion, it is still the greatest rock and roll song I have ever heard. Damnit, why did More Than A Feeling have to come out before my time? If I was around when that song was released that would’ve been badass. I can only imagine how hard Tom worked recording and mixing that whole record. The instruments are just amazing. The guitars during the intro along with the harmonics well done. The intro and second verse are my favorite parts. I always have to listen to the intro a few times before listening to the whole song. I also love the harmonics leading into the second verse. Brad Delp had the voice of an angel. The way he managed to sing those high notes was truly amazing. Rest In Peace Brad.

Fun fact: Tom's experience at Poloroid ended up being a tremendous asset when came to his songwriting and production. He explained that while working as a product design engineer that he gained a better understanding of the physics of sound, super positioning and phase cancellation. This allowed him to understand music on a more sophisticated level than most musicians and professional engineers.

Tom does not like to talk about this, but when he submitted his tracks for the record, Boylan said that the drum tracks were too amateurish to use. To remedy this deficit, Boylan hires LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to tutor Tom on how to record drums and other acoustic instruments properly as well as proper mic technique. Tom received hands on tutoring from an established LA studio engineer while this record was being made

One of my buddies growing up’s Dad used to work with him at Polaroid in Massachusetts. He used to rant about what a genius Tom was. Years later, my Dad and I met him on a job, and I helped repaint his living room and bedroom. Also saw him live in the old Boston Garden with Fahrenheight and Treat Her Right in 1988

The sound quality of that album, especially on 180g remastered vinyl played on a high quality turn table through a very high quality stereo, is actually addicting. The richness of the layers and smoothness of the tone is matched by few albums in history. I feel like Tom had the master tapes of Dark Side Of The Moon with him in the studio when he was mixing the Boston album a reference. There is no good reason on this planet why Tom and the original Boston lineup aren’t in the rock n roll hall of fame already.

@joe6096 You do know that the debut Boston record was mixed at Wesltake Studios by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom with assistance from Steve Hodge? Boylan tells the story of how mixing with Tom was a tug of war. Tom kept pushing the electric guitars and cymbals so hard that it was a battle to keep the vocals and drums from being buried in the mix. They ended up pushing the new API console into manual compression.

I pulled up to the red lights in my 2001 Ford 2 door sport explorer a couple of years ago. I had it all rebuilt, painted and installed a Alpine stereo with surround sound. A little Honda pulled up beside me with rap music cranked up. I popped in my Boston CD and played More then a feeling and cranked it up....shock then a cynical grin from the Honda. Boston always my favorite band.

I heard an interview recently with Dennis DeYoung and he said in the early days they were opening for Boston. I pissed myself. That would be my ultimate concert. My top 3 bands are Pink Floyd, Styx, and Boston. But without Dennis, Styx is just a cover band. And without Brad Delp Boston is just a smart guy with some backup musicians.

It’s almost unbelievable that Tom created all this work, and played every bit of the music by himself. That is insane, no question about it, he is as much of a genius as Albert Einstein! When you think about classics like More Than a Feeling, Long Time, Peace of Mind and Hitch a Ride, together with the other songs, and the fact he created his own unique sound, it’s truly one in a million. Last but not least, he got the legendary Brad Delp to sing all of his work, makes it even more remarkable.

@@christophermitchell1827 Cool! I am going back to my days when I was playing in cover bands and listening on cassette through the RockMan with speed control. That made it much easier to learn song lists recorded on uncalibrated cassette recorders. The overdrive function was nice too.

And to think there are probably many phenomenal musicians that dont put in the time in the evenings and take the risks like Tom did, and take that manager position for the rest of their lives. Steve Perry was ready to quit music entirely at 27, when Neal Schon just happened to get a hold of a demo of him singing. I think it was only one year later after that Journey became was huge.

I feel really fortunate to have grown up in the 60s and 70s. Listening to Boston on the old 8tracks, driving around in the late 70s in my 1970 Dodge Challenger 340 six pack... Epic memories. And this man and Boston, what incredible Musical and electrical genius. Went and made his sounds of his mind, for himself in the studio. The rest is history. One of the greatest bands to have ever came out of the 1970s

It would make perfect sense that Boston should have won "Best New Artist" in '77 . I'm sure it shocked Boston; anyone that was aware of the known recording techniques at the time concurred. It was the kiss of death some have said for The Starland Vocal Band. What it took to make the "Boston sound" is pure genius. Tom did not just stumble on these concepts but made a simple rock song touch and communicate with your soul.

I met Tom with some other engineering students from Ga. Tech. We went to meet the band at Peaches Record Store on Peachtree St. So, a frat brother of mine who was a EE major asked Tom how it was to be touring the whole country....and he answered, well, I'm getting laid an awful lot.... And there you have it.

Tom Scholz was a genius. He wrote all the songs, played all the instruments on the recording except for the drums, and lead vocals. He also devised, and patented his own guitar effects, and amps. That first Boston album was just absolute perfection. To this day, it still cannot be replicated!

The first album I ever owned was Boston's 1st. My parents refused to let me have a radio or record player up until my 15th birthday, when my neighbor gave me their debut album as a present. My parents said after I opened it, "Well, I guess we have to buy him a record player now." That was the beginning of my love affair with music.

@@horsepanther My mother was very religious and had a lot of quirks. One was thinking modern music would corrupt me. She also wouldn't buy my brother a 10-speed bike when he was about 12, because she thought all he would do was watch the front wheel go 'round & 'round. She projected her insecurities a lot. I guess that comes from her and her sisters being abandoned when they were little by her mother while her father was working on the north slope of Alaska. She just up and left them all, without a word or note. So, they all ended up being adopted by relatives.
