My mom has been a Tom Waits fan for most of her life. I had heard a few of songs but didn’t really care for him. I heard this song yesterday and fell in love, immediately going back to his early stuff. Instant fan. I still don’t love his voice in the later years but songs like this are just so pure. I never stop being amazed by this piece. Even when I forget it (briefly) , it remembers me. It’s like your best friend. And you haven’t seen them for a year or four. And you worry that you or they won’t be the same. And then it’s even better. This song has been my best friend for 20 years.

I remember a homeless drug dealer dragged us into his friend's New Orleans apartment back in 2009 just to play this song for us. My friend ended up drinking five four lokos, vomiting all over the place, and we had to drag his nasty naked body out of the place. Totally changed my appreciation of music. This song has such a special place in my heart.

Been a Waits fan my entire life. My uncle got me into his music when I was a kid. I loved that they used this song in Homicide. Pembelton is struggling to get up the stairs after his stroke to the lyrics "I find we'll lay down together in the cold, cold ground." That's where Andre Braugher is now. RIP. Great song, great actor.

There's this lady who's almost 60 that I'm very close friends with who used to be the manager of a strip joint, she always has stories about her WW2 vet father and how he was capable of being both one of the most caring men in the world and a vile bastard to anybody who'd pose a threat to him or his own after the war ended.
