If I close my eyes listening to Him sing...I can see a hobo wandering the earth, watching people...and singing in a park, on a train, or on someone's front porch. He who sees reality.

a voice that should be cursing the world sings it the tenderest of love songs. the knowledge that should send us raging against the dying of the light leaves us with the realization that humility is endless. the tears of sadness thus run down smiling cheeks. this song, it's the further union, the deeper communion... obviously he can sing about matters of which we cannot speak ...

Hi, Davor. This is a wonderful song, sounding so tender and softly in spite of Tom's grizzled voice, or maybe just because of that - strength and tenderness combined. This video and Killing The Blues are definitely my favorites. And very, very good choice of pictures, some are marvelous. I've watched it several times.

damondarkwalker I agree. I just watched the movie but have always loved tom waits and Jackson Pollock. The movie shook me most because I can identify with it personally on many levels. I've always considered myself too drunk to drive, too irresponsible to have children, and too content to change anything.

I'm 21 and I already complain about new music, because it basicall takes absolutely no talent to get on the radio today, just a drum box and and autotuner. There are no true composers or lyrical geniuses that get anywhere close to the recongnition that people who sing about drugs and "hos" get. Sad state of music, for sur, but I am glad I can transcend the popular drivel that makes it onto the radio these days and appreciate music by a man who wears originality like a badge of honor.

By all means be proud that you have discerning musical tastes and the knowledge to tell good music from bad, but you need to look harder and not be so discouraged. Here's a few of my favorites: Felice Brothers, AA Bondy, The Duke and The King (Simone Felice), Sufjan Stevens, The Jayhawks, St Vincent, The Mountain Goats. There's soooo much good music out there now. Pop music is usually shit in most decades, you just gotta dig a little.

@metalheadoj666 Tbh, i'm going to go ahead and be selfish in saying, this is what makes things so much better. If he were massively successful and rated it'd be justified yes, but it'd gain scrutiny and everyone would offer criticism, review, etc. He'd be eveywhere, I'm glad he's at the status he is. Its a statement about society that Tom Waits is quietly respected and Akon is a billionaire at the top of the charts with a song called 'where da hoes at?'...
