Can't agree more. Tom is indeed the best character of Succession and perhaps one of the best TV characters ever written and acted. They gave him a steady Dark Horse character arc. Most evolved and thus most intriguing. Am rewatching the series right now and observing that how minutely the writers were laying down the clues for us to figure out that Tom is going to be the ultimate Successor. And Matthew Macfadyen is a genius. No one else could have played Tom Wambsgans except Matthew.

Succession writers wrote his character so well. You would think someone who was as much a weasel the way Tom is, would be an unlikeable character. But a lot of viewers love him. I'm happy that Tom got the ending that he did. And the way he forgave Greg really made the ending less depressing and worth it. Btw, I also think Tom is the best character on the show. He can be such a prick but you can't help but feel sorry for him sometimes. Matthew Macfadyen is a great actor.

I expected the kids to lose in the end, but I really hated the way it happened. Shiv's self destructive pivot and surrender to failure right as they were about to be on top of the world seemed nonsensical to me, her docile acceptance of alpha Tom was baffling.

He didn't win. That is the whole point of the show. There is no winning for anyone in this universe. None of them can break the cycle of abuse that has been going on for generations. Sure Tom ended up CEO, but he will always be a mere puppet CEO for Mattson, while trapped in a loveless marriage, having a child with a woman who does not love him.

Tom said he likes nice things, he likes money. Being CEO he gets both of these in abundance without having the burden of making big decisions. In Corporate world only those survive who are not consumed by overbearing self-obsession. Tom is not delusional. He is aware of his skills as well as his limitations. He knows how to play long game and survive. Like the way he fired Karl, Frank, Hugo and re-hired Gerri immediately after taking charge was so smart. Also Tom yearned so much to be a Dad and finally he is having one. About the marriage, I doubt he is gonna stuck there forever as he was so keen to go for divorce but it's Shiv who was more willing to reconcile. So yeah Tom did Win, in many ways, yes.

well was Mattson supposed to make a guy he barley knows a partner on DAY 1? This is a chance for Tom to put it down for Mattson and possibly make partner or move to another company as CEO leaves.

Surrounded by all these awful people Tom would have to continue degrading his soul to remain at the table. And that doesn’t feel like a win to the average non narcissist. But Tom likes shiny things and doesn’t need a soul so yeah he won in his world. He can only hope to be as happy as Logan was.

@@cyrusamaria Tom was never to be a partner with Matsson and Tom knows this because Matsson told him. Shiv thought, for some reason, that she was going to be a partner with Matsson if she sold the company to him and he appointed her CEO. Really poor logic on Shiv's part. Tom got job because, he was, more or less, already doing it at ATN, Waystar|RoyCo's cash cow and, all Matsson wanted was an implementor who will follow orders and be a pain sponge (which Tom already was in the Roy family).
