When Evelyn first meets Ninny at the nursing home and asks if the name Idgie Threadgoode rings a bell she tells her (Evelyn) that she (Ninny) was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family and had married Idgie’s brother Cleo. Ninny and Idgie are two separate characters both in the book and in the movie.
@sethd64853 жыл бұрын
@@SaintAndrewX nooo. they’re not. not in the film. in the book, yes. they changed that for the film. you cannot watch this scene play out and think that it’s not at least possible that Ninny and Idgie are the same person. there is no other way to read this scene. sure, Ninny says she married into the family. that’s because she is an unreliable narrator in the film. she purposefully misleads Evelyn by narrating in the third person until she is sure she can trust her. Evelyn is also the first person she opens up to about the killing of Ruth’s husband. i agree with the above commenter that narrating in the third person is likely her way of coping with the death of her one true love, Ruth. she’s an unreliable narrator and that is so much more interesting dramatically than the story we get in the book. this scene is rife with ambiguity and it’s very obvious that the filmmakers wanted to at least open us up the possibility that Ninny is Idgie.

My question is this: If Idgie and Ninny are two separate people, why would Ninny say she was married to Idgie’s brother and she had a crush on Buddy (Idgie’s other brother)? She wouldn’t say that about her own brothers. But at the same time, if Idgie and Ninny are two different characters, how would Ninny have that intimate of knowledge about Idgie and Ruth’s lives (including a picture of Ruth by herself without Idgie) without actually being present in the story? Her knowledge of the events is too deep to have been told the story later by someone else. And the line about Ninny sometimes seeing a glimpse of Idgie, implying that the two have virtually no contact anymore, which I find hard to believe if they were so close that Ninny would have such intimate knowledge of Idgie’s life.
@Donfrak11 ай бұрын
To me it is implied she is Idgie. When Ninny says that sometimes she catches a "glimpse" of Idgie, i think she means that for some moments she still feels alive like in the old times when she was young and vibrant. The note on the grave it is too recent, it has to be her. In the movie Ninny is Idgie. No doubt.
