My mother was born in 1925, she has always visited all the cemeteries where the family is buried. She would go buy flowers and take them and put on the families' graves. She did it up until Easter this year. She passed away at the end of May. Now I will have to carry on her legacy.

This is one of my all time favorites. If you haven’t seen this film, you better have a box of tissues handy because the floodgates will definitely open multiple times throughout the movie. I love the fake-outs the movie does too to throw you off and play with your emotions, just making you THINK Ninny was dead at the end instead of her actually dying (like she does in the book).

So sweet watched it a few weeks ago on a hot summer afternoon. I remember watching it with my sweet sister about 6 months before she died of breast cancer at age 38. I had forgotten about the Ruth dying scene and was worried about upsetting her when it came on. She just sweetly smiled at me and said, 'It's okay to use the 'D' word with me, I love you".

I’ve actually been to the real cafe the book is based on. Whistlestop Cafe is actually Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama. @@sethd6485 That is still a moot point. Without the book there would be no movie. The book was wildly popular! Irondale Cafe is also wildly popular in Alabama. The author’s family owned it for four decades. No matter how you want to look at it, the one in Irondale is the original and if Fannie Flagg hadn’t written the book the movie wouldn’t exist. Moot. When Evelyn first meets Ninny at the nursing home and asks if the name Idgie Threadgoode rings a bell she tells her (Evelyn) that she (Ninny) was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family and had married Idgie’s brother Cleo. Ninny and Idgie are two separate characters both in the book and in the movie.
@sethd6485
@sethd6485 3 жыл бұрын
@@SaintAndrewX nooo. they’re not. not in the film. in the book, yes. they changed that for the film. you cannot watch this scene play out and think that it’s not at least possible that Ninny and Idgie are the same person. there is no other way to read this scene. sure, Ninny says she married into the family. that’s because she is an unreliable narrator in the film. she purposefully misleads Evelyn by narrating in the third person until she is sure she can trust her. Evelyn is also the first person she opens up to about the killing of Ruth’s husband. i agree with the above commenter that narrating in the third person is likely her way of coping with the death of her one true love, Ruth. she’s an unreliable narrator and that is so much more interesting dramatically than the story we get in the book. this scene is rife with ambiguity and it’s very obvious that the filmmakers wanted to at least open us up the possibility that Ninny is Idgie.

My question is this: If Idgie and Ninny are two separate people, why would Ninny say she was married to Idgie’s brother and she had a crush on Buddy (Idgie’s other brother)? She wouldn’t say that about her own brothers. But at the same time, if Idgie and Ninny are two different characters, how would Ninny have that intimate of knowledge about Idgie and Ruth’s lives (including a picture of Ruth by herself without Idgie) without actually being present in the story? Her knowledge of the events is too deep to have been told the story later by someone else. And the line about Ninny sometimes seeing a glimpse of Idgie, implying that the two have virtually no contact anymore, which I find hard to believe if they were so close that Ninny would have such intimate knowledge of Idgie’s life.
@Donfrak
@Donfrak 11 ай бұрын
To me it is implied she is Idgie. When Ninny says that sometimes she catches a "glimpse" of Idgie, i think she means that for some moments she still feels alive like in the old times when she was young and vibrant. The note on the grave it is too recent, it has to be her. In the movie Ninny is Idgie. No doubt.

No livro são pessoas diferentes, no filme, o diretor sugere que são a mesma pessoa.Eu prefiro a versão do filme.

It’s left ambiguous. In the novel, it’s made very clear that Ninny and Idgie are 2 separate people

@@purpleheart300 Honestly, i think that, in the movie, Ninny and Idgie aren’t the same person. They give these little hints that they’re 2 separate people. At the beginning of the movie, Ninny said that she had a crush on Buddy, who was Idgie’s BROTHER

@@superjackster0165 in the movie they are the same person. The line about Idgie's brother was just a diversion she created to not expose herself. Probably she told that story(or attempted) to other people before. But only Evelyn got interested, and grow fond of her. And thats why she revealed to ther to be Idgie.
