I could just imagine tasting that one. It looked sooo good! Looks like you found another keeper 😀

Thanks a bunch! I almost dread the end of the year when we have to sit down and decide what stays for next year and what goes. All of them are just so unique and good in there own way. LOL

Carbon is a favorite in South Dakota because it is delicious, and it's always one of the earliest large tomatoes ready.

Thanks tons! South Dakota knows there stuff. Carbon is an excellent type. :)

Cherokee purple are my favorite, but I will definitely have to try these!

Thanks tons! The CP are our favorite as well but this type is really good and our favorite for making sauce. Both really have that deep purple/dark tomato flavor though. :)

Hard to beat a CP mater. That carbon looked really good. Thanks for the info! Glad to see your saving some of the seeds for next year. Have a great rest of the week folks.
@UT332006 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! A really, really good tomato for sure. Seemed to lean a little more towards the saucing type than a CP, but nearly the same flavor on a lesser know type. We are big time seed saver and sharers for sure. :)

So mouth watering! Wish I had planted a variety of tomatoes.
@UT332006 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! For the 3 years previous in this yard we only had 5-6 varieties each year. Usually different types each time, but generally the more common ones or known types. This year we decided to really test our limits and approaching the end of this season we plan to continue the trend indefinitely. A really great plant to grow(along with peppers) for small spaces and/or containers.

How was the yield for the carbon? How does the yield compare to cherokee purple?
@UT332003 жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch! I don't have as much experience with the Carbon as the CP but let me give an opinion on what I have seen. I think the CP can produce a bit more but under better circumstances. Our Carbon seemed to produce only slightly less but the CP can be a deformed or wonky looking and less usable tomato. I'd say the CP is a barely better producer but the tomatoes from the Carbon were more uniform in shape and produced just slightly less. Both are excellent and produce quite a bit. The CP(to us) tastes better and produces slightly better but the Carbon is very close on flavor and production but the tomatoes are all a good shape and overall draw more attention in the yard. Hope this helped. :)

So carbon or cherokee purple ftw?
@UT332002 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! I am still a C. Purple FTW but that is a close one. Both are really good though and might be nostalgia that causes the C. Purple to be preferred over here. The Carbon has alot going for it as well but for us personally we tend to lean the C. Purples way. :)

Now, have you tried the Cherokee Carbon? The hybrid offspring of the two! I found that the straight Cherokee Purple "ran out of gas" last year after it set five or six tomatoes, so I am hoping that the hybrid will inject some hybrid vigor into the offspring and keep it healthier.
@UT332003 жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch! That sounds like a great one for sure. The Carbon had really strong plants and the C. Purple only edged it out for us by the texture and amount of meat in the tomato. To get a cross would be really good if it could produce a better shaped/producing tomato with the same amount/texture of meat and a strong plant. Really interesting stuff. :)

@@UT33200 I grow all my tomatoes on my balcony in sup-irrigated containers. I have a C. Carbon right next to a blighted Tasmanian Chocolate. The C. Carbon is green, lush, loaded with fruit, and untouched by its neighbor's blight. If it continues like this, and the taste is close to its parents, it'll be my new favorite
@elizabethblane2013 жыл бұрын
@@UT33200 I forgot to mention that while the C. Purple has a tendency to produce fused blossoms and misshapen fruit, the C. Carbon, so far, has only nicely-shaped fruit and no fused blossoms.

This is my first year trying these. How are they for pest and disease resistance?
@UT332002 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! These are really good on both of those it feels like. We haven't grown them often and ours were in containers which can help by controlling the situation better but a pretty resistant plant. They can grow crazy wild indeterminate like a C. Purple plant so may need some trimming for healthier growth but a pretty strong plant. This is with our limited knowledge though. :)

If you had to choose between Carbon and Cherokee Purple which one would you chose?
@UT332003 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! We would and have definitely chose the Ch. Purple. It is our very favorite overall. That may be personal preference and experience though. There is a strong case for the Carbon and can see how some prefer it. Both produce about the same, both are very close on flavor, the Carbon has much more uniform and better shaped tomatoes, but the decider is the meat for us. The Ch. Purple inside is a really thick tomato and more meaty/less juicy. The Carbon is a good slicer but the Ch. Purple is the best. :)

@@UT33200 Thanks for the answer man. I've planted Cherokee Purple and Black Krim for the first time this year. I hope it goes well. Best wishes from Serbia.

Choose the Cherokee Carbon for both and higher yield.
@HiNinqi5 жыл бұрын
That looks like a tomato I would love since it's not super juicy. Do you have a link for buying seeds to these?
@UT332005 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! This one is the Carbon and the best and most reliable seeds for it are here: www.rareseeds.com/carbon-tomato/ but not quite as meaty as the Cherokee Purple tomato which is our overall favorite.
@DeadEyeRabbit4 жыл бұрын
So what’s the decision? Did these become your number 1?
@UT332004 жыл бұрын
Thanks tons! The Carbon didn't become our #1 but a strong contender regardless. Both tasted very close and the Carbon grew better shaped but the Ch. Purple just seemed to have more meat and slightly stronger growing plant. That was for us anyways. Our container system could be a bit of a different style grow but still the Ch. Purple is our overall favorite type. :)
