You are awesome! Great teacher! I love how you reuse what you have to do what you need to do. I was raised like this. You also don’t talk technical to show how educated you are. I like plain talk. 🙂

Thank you. I am just a plain old country boy (although, I am, 80 years old) and wouldn't know how to talk technical anyway. I like to talk and teach as though the viewer doesn't know anything about what I am teaching. And I try to think about what questions the viewer might have and answer them before they are asked. Thank you very much for watching my videos. I am working on my video of growing kidney beans and canning them, I hope to have the video uploaded by the weekend. Please subscribe. OAG

On the 56th latitude, with our very short growing season, the more roots on the plant the faster it will grow. This is a great way to start tomato plants! It gives the roots a lot of room to grow down compared to the pots I've been using. Will be using this method when transplanting. Thanks OAG!

I love this way of planting and recycling at the same time. As you may remember, I am from Mobile Alabama. Planted my first tomato plants this year. I bought plants rather than seeds this year. I have a wee little garden to start with. I have a better boy and two of the big beef. They are all flowering and producing much fruit, but it's doubtful that I will ever buy the big beef again, because I have constantly battled the caterpillars and slugs eating my leaves. My dad bought the celebrity and not one worm on his bushes. So far I have been using neem, soap and water spraying my plants, but I am open to ideas from you, neighbor..... Thank you again for another great video
@OldAlabamaGardener

The best control for the tomato worm and other pest worms is to spray with Bacillus thuringiensis, commonly called Bt. It is not harmful to humans and will stop the worm damages to your tomatoes. @@OldAlabamaGardener one more question.... the exact same worm is on my cabbage.... Can I use the bt for that also?
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, Bt works on any worm except fishing worms, but fishing worms don't eat your crops. And when you buy a bottle of Bt, it stays good, sitting on the shelf, for years. I welcome your questions. OAG

I always have trouble with them growing since we keep the house cooler and I don't have all the lights and things to help them to grow. :( I plant mine when it gets warmer and I can sit them out on the patio but then they're not very large and it takes longer to get mators! GOT to rig me up something so I can get them in the soil earlier!!! I would love a seed starting 101 from you. When do you start watering them with fertilizer once they come up?

I'm almost certain I burnt my tomato plants. The leaves turned brown and are now crumbly. At first I thought it was my grow light but I fertilized with fish emulsion in 1 gallon of water then because of the color change on the leaves (deep green to light green) I thought I would water with a little epsom salt about a week later but the plants continued to lose it's leaves and no color change. I pulled a few of the plants out to see if there was root rot and the roots were white! The stalks look decent (green with girth). Now I'm thinking I over fertilized even though that wasn't my initial thought. I really felt like it was the grow light. I had my plants in a grow box and them because they were getting bigger moved them out of the box under another grow light on my table...the light on the table is a little stronger. According to your video I shouldve used half the strength because of the stage of the plant. Please let me know your thoughts.

Hello and welcome to my videos. It definitely is possible to burn plants with too much high nitrogen fertilizer. Too hot a light will also burn the leaves, if the light is too close. If you haven't already, I invite you to subscribe and watch as I upload more videos during the summer growing season. Thanks for watching. OAG

Hi again OAG. I love the reusing of plastic bottles, that is great! With tomatoes, I see people online and in books say that you should not use the same soil year after year for tomatoes. Do you find this true? I’ve been using the same bed for 4 years now. Thanks OAG. I’ve learned so much from your videos.

Hello It2723 and welcome back. Those bottles actually work very well. They are smooth in the inside and the plants will slide out without breaking the roots up. Keep watching as I make more videos. OAG

Hi. OAG. I've been looking for the triple 13 all day and couldn't find any place. What is the brand and where do you buy from? Learning a lot from you. Thank you.

Hello Kira. Triple 13 is not a brand. It is just a fertilizer that has 13% of three different fertilizers. Where are you located? OAG

Hello Sir. I have 9 tomatoe plants in a raised garden. I am a beginner gardener. I just had to throw away 6 tomatoes. My sister in law said it was Blosson End Rot? Mimsy's garden sent me to you for help. Thanks. 💗
@OldAlabamaGardener

Blossom End Rot is a calcium issue. For some reason the plant can't take it up or there is not enough calcium in the soil. Watch my videos on how to correct this using egg shells and another ingredient at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpmTg4qBat2Caac AND at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHQapyHr6mlqLc OAG

Zone 8. North Florida. I am using your method on growing onions, how ever I am not sure of the fertilizer schedule. How often should I fertilize? I use 10-10-10 and Ammonia Nitrate. Triple 13 is not available here
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Ron. If using triple 10, I would put one and a half cups per ten foot row before I planted the onion slips. Mix it into the soil. Then set the slips is and water them well. two weeks later side dress with one half cup of ammonium nitrate per ten foot of row (ammonium nitrate is 34% nitrogen, so you will use less of it than of ammonium sulfate). Because your soil is sandy, I would side dress every two weeks. CAUTION: Too much ammonium nitrate will burn the plants. OAG

Aren't u concerned about the health issues a miracle grow fertilizer can cause? Just curious since u always giving us health advice.Also I want to ask... when u start your tomatoes do u put draining holes in the tray.The first one u used where u broadcasted all the tomatoes seeds at once?sorry for the long questions
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Kat and welcome to my videos. As to health concerns about fertilizers, you might see a comment below where a person asked about why I don't use organics. My answer is: I don't believe it makes any difference to the plant or to us which fertilizer we use, *_what does make a difference is what kind of poison sprays is used on commercial crops, I don't use poison sprays on anything I am going to eat._* The trays I use do not have drain holes in them because I am using them inside the house and I wouldn't want water dripping out the bottom on to the floor. If I wee using them outside, and I do sometime, I would have drain holes in them. Questions are okay, I encourage folks to ask questions. OAG

Hello Maria and welcome to my videos. First, I must say I am not experienced with mango trees. You might try this: 1) Spray the tree with Potassium nitrate is KNO3. 2) Drive a few nails into the tree trunk. 3) Beat the tree trunk with something like a ball bat. But I have not tried any of this so truly I don't know. OAG
