Older video games often built their levels with tank controls in mind. The old Tomb Raider games were very blocky in their level designs, but the tank controls meant you could align yourself perfectly for each jump. That's why the modern controls don't work, they're made for more modern games.

Honestly, I play with tank controls but the modern ones have potential. The main issue is you don't have a consistent way to get a run up to set up jumps (you can take out your guns but it's not intuitive and sometimes you don't have guns in some parts of the game). There are a few things they could tweak around as well but I got a time of 1:39.9 just now and that's with me wasting several seconds at the end before I realized you have to press Y and to use the zip line and not RT. As long as you make good use of the walk button (same way you would with tank controls) and you take advantage of the quick ledge grab for modern controls (hold RT as you go over the edge) you'll be kind of okay. That being said, they need to add some tutorial for modern controls, even if just text boxes

You can but you have to have your guns out which is goofy as you’d have to unequip to grab during certain jumps adding extra input requirements. It’s just not worth it for how convoluted everything becomes with modern controls
@Jacobyeavello9 ай бұрын
@elvickRULES that's actually not true. I really wish they would've made a tutorial video for the modern controls. Your guns only stay out as long as you hold the draw weapon button (L2 for me) down. So once the jump begins you can just release the button and lara puts her guns away. Also your grab is mapped to exclusively the "secondary" button removing it from the action button entirely. However, unlike in tank controls once stuck to a ledge you will hold on until you press the roll button to release. The modern controls are only difficult because the game doesn't do any work to explain how to use them to access laras tools so you just assume it's only a method of smoother movement. As someone very familiar with the og controls and game modern is faster for almost all the platforming, but most people are going to be turned away by the jank inherent in both modern and tank controls.

Im near the end of tomb raider one and have used modern conteols the entire time. My only gripe os when you have the graphics set to modern, the camera goes haywire in tight spaces or near walls. The modern controls don’t work because the levels are designed on a grid, and all of Lara’s moves are based on that grid. Forward jumps, side and backflips all move in that grid. Don’t use the sticks on your controller, use the d pad, to move forward smoothly, press forward and to turn while moving forward role your thumb so that you are pressing forward and left or right at the same time. Also don’t use the right stick to move the camera it messes up her moves, instead if you need to see something stop walking and hold the look button then you can look around from Lara’s perspective.

You guys should actually listen to what Lara tells you, because it would help you control her. You don’t have to push jump and the grab to climb a block just push forward and the action button. And yes you have to hold action while climbing, think of it as you holding on, you let go, she let’s go, which if you think about it makes a lot of sense.

Tank controls are not bad at all actually i prefer tank controls i feel they have more precision then modern controls not just in tomb raider but in games in general.
@MartinNelson9 ай бұрын
Neither set of controls are representative of the original control system. I found the remaster controls so dreadful I went back to my original copies of TR and the removal of dedicated sidesteps makes the experience slower, more fiddly, and actively worse. Which is such a shame really.

I never liked how these games controlled, so I was excited to dig into the remaster with the new controls. ... That lasted precisely as long as it took me to get to the first platforming section.

Conclusive proof that tank controls are superior, and that Andy raging at a game is comedy gold 😂

Actually, it depends on if you’re used to tank or modern controls. As someone who never played a game with tank control, tank control was unplayable for me, had to switch to modern control just to be able to play.

Make me feel better to see someone who plays games for a living getting as angry as I do. I know it’s time to take a break when my dog quietly leaves the room because I’m shouting unprintable things to my in-game self when I’m sucking at something in a game.

to hop back a square using modern controls: 1.) press look button 2.) tilt analog stick backwards 3.) press look button again if you hold the walk button while doing this you can take a single step backwards, this is useful for taking a walking step into a running jump and may be more reliable than running a full square as toggling modern controls allows you to jump earlier in Lara’s running animation than usual.

Worse modern controls won't stop me buying the remaster whenever I get around to it. For the simple fact that the original controls are there as an option. The Playstation releases of TR1/TR2/TR3 are my favourite 3 Tomb Raider games ever. (in reverse order of release for my personal top 3.) But even I know from sad experience that modern analog controllers are AWFUL (in capitals) to attempt to play them with, on the Steam PC versions of those 3 original games. Wooly analog input makes it a constant fight with the controller to do precise movement. My solution, and it's an almost perfect solution for my needs, was simply to purchase a good condition original Playstation non-dual shock/analog controller from ebay. Used along with a PS1/PS2 USB adaptor that I'd owned for decades by that point. That acts as a hub to plug the controller into. Those games are still iffy regarding button config. So I also use a keyboard to controller input program to solve that problem. A lot of work? Yeah absolutely. Allows playing of the original 3 Tomb Raiders on PC with save anywhere facility. Totally worth it.

I never played these games on a console, so I used the keyboard to play them. I used to be pretty good at this obstacle course. I don't remember what my best time was, but I know that except for the parts where the game forces you to go slow (like climbing the ropes), I used to be able to run through the entire course. You can shave a couple seconds off your time by starting on the left side, that way when you get to the side-jump section, you're already lined up with the first jump. Note: I am NOT a speed runner. I have never tried to speedrun a game. I just used to practice this part quite a bit.

Again, despite the mental trauma for all involved, I absolutely loved this video! Dare we imagine a limited Rage Quit Oxboxtra series with the team? 🤣🤣 Loved it, thanks guys.

I’ve been playing the remasters since release and I’ve been using modern controls and I’m already on the golden mask lmao they’re actually so smooth and easy they just have quirks that you have to get used to but ngl certain platforming situations are just best done with tank controls so I switch back and forth once in a while and honestly it’s not as bad as some people make it seem

I'm telling people complaining that Tomb Raider's tank controls aren't even hard to learn. It has got to be the easiest tank control game to learn because everything is on a grid and Lara's movements are designed to fit within that grid, in turn making it easy to align her for jumps.

Jane, Ellen and Andy (with cameos from Mike and later Luke), I do believe this is one of the best videos you have ever made and I'm sure many other people who have or will watch this video will agree with me on that statement. These games are simply awesome and the nostalgia juices are on fire just watching this, I need to get this for myself and experience it first hand. But, you would think they as well as updating the graphics (which I assume you can change from old to new whenever you want) they would update the controls properly so you could have a choice and experience good classic controls and good new controls, but alas we can only dream of this reality sadly. Btw, I love the added touch of disapproval or approval messages on the video, very nice touch indeed.

For Some Reason, you can only side flip/back flip with modern controls when you have guns drawn. which. you cant do in the tutorial. so thats weird

You can do the side jumps with the modern controls but you have to have Lara's guns out to do it. It doesn't feel the same though, it's very temperamental.

The tank controls weren't that bad because that's how games were controlled, at the time thumbsticks were in their infancy being either the N64 or the slightly later dualshock which a lot of titles treated as an optional alternative.
