Lara Croft has survived spike pits, dinosaurs and Atlantean flesh monsters. But can she survive Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered's remastered 'modern' controls? Science recommends sticking with the classic tank controls.

I would love to see a "7 things that are easier to do irl" video including things like: walk in a straight line, go up and down small ledges, interact with the correct object, say what you mean instead of accidentally insult/punch someone etc etc

Here's my contribution: talking to someone rather than jumping up and down like they have springs on their shoes. (For context; a lot of games have interact and jump on the same button. So, instead of talking to an npc, the character will just jump around because you were a millimeter off from the range of the jump button becoming the interact button.)

Older video games often built their levels with tank controls in mind. The old Tomb Raider games were very blocky in their level designs, but the tank controls meant you could align yourself perfectly for each jump. That's why the modern controls don't work, they're made for more modern games.

I grew up with these games so I don't use the modern controls, that's something I wondered about when I tried them for five seconds. The grid system that makes her jump at the end of every "square" is what all these levels were designed around. I didn't try the jumping so I wondered if it was fully responsive and you had to actually time the jumps properly
@cactustactics
@cactustactics 3 ай бұрын
@@whitewolf3051 when it came out it was probably the first time most people played that kind of game with that kind of control system, nobody was really "used to it" y'know? But that's how the game was designed, the combat and a lot of the jumping puzzles rely on you being able to bounce around precisely without worrying what the camera's doing. It's just how it was meant to play, it's weird at first but you'd probably get used to it if you gave it a chance!

Fun challenge video! Yeah, the remasters do NOT explain the "modern" controls at all. People are having to learn them from watching other videos and streams of people playing. That's a pretty big oversight on the part of Aspyr, who did the remasters. Also, if you want true modern controls with old school charm, play TR: Anniversary. It's a remake of the original TR, but on the Crystal Dynamics engine from the XB360, PS3-era.

Turn down the sensitivity from 5 to 3 makes a huge difference. Give yourself some time to learn the buttons and you’ll find modern controls to be simple to use. Took me 10 mins in Lara’s house on TR1 and traversing the map became a lot easier. Plus you can do the back jump, etc when in the main game as you do them when you have guns. As for play anniversary, its a very different game. Based on the original but very different. This remaster is the only way to play the original TR1 as it looked and as it was designed.

I basically grew up playing TR 1-5 and pretty much only on keyboard. I still to this day cannot get the hang of anything that requires right thumb steering/camera, but I can blitz the tank controls on keyboard through muscle memory. I am so glad they remastered this, for the nostalgia and the itch I need to scratch of being in actual tombs (definitely missing in the reboot). These games inspired my to study archaeology, so the move to a cover shooter was disappointing (though I did enjoy the reboots too). I also found the mapped buttons on controller really odd choices in the remaster.

@Jacobyeavello
@Jacobyeavello 3 ай бұрын
@elvickRULES that's actually not true. I really wish they would've made a tutorial video for the modern controls. Your guns only stay out as long as you hold the draw weapon button (L2 for me) down. So once the jump begins you can just release the button and lara puts her guns away. Also your grab is mapped to exclusively the "secondary" button removing it from the action button entirely. However, unlike in tank controls once stuck to a ledge you will hold on until you press the roll button to release. The modern controls are only difficult because the game doesn't do any work to explain how to use them to access laras tools so you just assume it's only a method of smoother movement. As someone very familiar with the og controls and game modern is faster for almost all the platforming, but most people are going to be turned away by the jank inherent in both modern and tank controls.

Im near the end of tomb raider one and have used modern conteols the entire time. My only gripe os when you have the graphics set to modern, the camera goes haywire in tight spaces or near walls. A hint for anyone using modern controls, if you walk to an edge then draw your guns, let go of walk and tap back and it gives you the perfect run up for jumps.

Honestly, I play with tank controls but the modern ones have potential. The main issue is you don't have a consistent way to get a run up to set up jumps (you can take out your guns but it's not intuitive and sometimes you don't have guns in some parts of the game). There are a few things they could tweak around as well but I got a time of 1:39.9 just now and that's with me wasting several seconds at the end before I realized you have to press Y and to use the zip line and not RT. As long as you make good use of the walk button (same way you would with tank controls) and you take advantage of the quick ledge grab for modern controls (hold RT as you go over the edge) you'll be kind of okay. That being said, they need to add some tutorial for modern controls, even if just text boxes

Make me feel better to see someone who plays games for a living getting as angry as I do. I know it’s time to take a break when my dog quietly leaves the room because I’m shouting unprintable things to my in-game self when I’m sucking at something in a game.

Tank control for Tomb Raider are great IF you're playing on a PC with a keyboard; the arrow keys are good but the very best way to play Tomb Raider is with the NumPad for moving and ctrl shift and alt for action, walk, and jump (though technically you could Lara quite well just with one hand as all the controls are mapped to the numpad, it works great for 1 & 2, a tiny bit more confusing for 3 as there are more buttons). As a rule of thumb tank controls usually work great on keyboards, even the PC version of Resident Evil 1-2-3 (original, not remake) worked great with the arrow keys. ;)

Downloaded last night and tried both sets and I found tank controls better. Probably because the game, it's jumps and mechanics were designed around the controls and the "limitations." Here's hoping Legend gets a remaster at some point. That's my favourite TR.

Actually, it depends on if you’re used to tank or modern controls. As someone who never played a game with tank control, tank control was unplayable for me, had to switch to modern control just to be able to play.
@Randomninja47
@Randomninja47 3 ай бұрын
@@whitewolf3051 That's interesting. I find the lack of being able to line up jumps and no side jumping/backflipping to be a massive hinderance. That and the camera doesn't auto follow enemies making them a bit worse to try and deal with. That said, I'm glad you like the modern controls and it allows you to play these great games. I'm all for that.

I never played these games on a console, so I used the keyboard to play them. I used to be pretty good at this obstacle course. I don't remember what my best time was, but I know that except for the parts where the game forces you to go slow (like climbing the ropes), I used to be able to run through the entire course. You can shave a couple seconds off your time by starting on the left side, that way when you get to the side-jump section, you're already lined up with the first jump. Note: I am NOT a speed runner. I have never tried to speedrun a game. I just used to practice this part quite a bit.

I’ve been playing the remasters since release and I’ve been using modern controls and I’m already on the golden mask lmao they’re actually so smooth and easy they just have quirks that you have to get used to but ngl certain platforming situations are just best done with tank controls so I switch back and forth once in a while and honestly it’s not as bad as some people make it seem

to hop back a square using modern controls: 1.) press look button 2.) tilt analog stick backwards 3.) press look button again if you hold the walk button while doing this you can take a single step backwards, this is useful for taking a walking step into a running jump and may be more reliable than running a full square as toggling modern controls allows you to jump earlier in Lara’s running animation than usual.

Jane, Ellen and Andy (with cameos from Mike and later Luke), I do believe this is one of the best videos you have ever made and I'm sure many other people who have or will watch this video will agree with me on that statement. These games are simply awesome and the nostalgia juices are on fire just watching this, I need to get this for myself and experience it first hand. But, you would think they as well as updating the graphics (which I assume you can change from old to new whenever you want) they would update the controls properly so you could have a choice and experience good classic controls and good new controls, but alas we can only dream of this reality sadly. Btw, I love the added touch of disapproval or approval messages on the video, very nice touch indeed.

This video has just unlocked a memory for me- somewhere towards the end of Nevada in TR3 there was a jump that looked like a (3 unit 😂) running jump and grab. BUT, you’d never make it. Must have spent hours not making it. Turns out it was a totally unique, one time only standing jump and grab needed. Totally ignored the logic that covered the jumping everywhere else.

@@robehickmann thats not a side jump, thats jumping to forward in the direction. A side jump is the side flip she does. All those different flips that arent in the modern control scheme let you platform differently. like for example in the obstable course in t2 tutorial level, the bit with the platforms you can side jump, forward jump, side jump in seconds. Loads of the levels have these setups where you can flip like an acrobat and scale things quickly
