I still play retro games. It‘s not all about graphic but fun and yes, also nostalgia. Playing this demo gave me a great memory back. I can imagine how awesome this would be as a full version to visit again Venice driving the speedboat and Tibet riding the Snowmobile trough the cave.

TR (1996) and TR2 (1997) were an absolute blast ! I have a lots of good memories playing those games, especially my favorite TR-Level of all time "Venice" in TR2 and it's gorgeous premissionary trainingsection with all it's secrets and eastereggs.

@@DarlingDaisy I agree, the bow and arrow is awesome, but I was referring to how in the new games (Tomb Raider 2013 or Rise of The Tomb Raider) the dual pistols are no longer the main weapon. When you play these new games it doesn't even feel like Tomb Raider anymore, more of a survival game with a basic female protagonist. Imagine playing Hitman without his silenced pistols, it wouldn't feel the same.

The games were much more atmospheric and more of Horror/Puzzle games in an adventure/shooter setting. The point was to get you super focused on the puzzles and exploring and then you get jumped by scant enemies. New games have too much going on to capture the completely alone horror feeling the old games had.

Well, there are two things: 1. Nicobass, the creator of this fanmade remake, said that he only plans to do The Great Wall and Croft Manor. 2. Crystal Dynamics stated that they're perfectly fine with the whole thing as long as Nicobass doesn't make any profit from it. Of course, that includes crowd funding.

Square enix, edios, crystal dynamics, whoever onlys the rights to the original 4 tomb raider games have so far no intention of re creating the games. They should let him take some crowd funding and release it to the public for free. We would all pay a small fee to help it along and get it out to the public.

There's no better time to make quality games like this than today. You have access to free, top of the bill game engines, cheap or free assets, animation tools and some people dumb enough to help you with your passion project for free. I hope the tools will be made available somehow so that other groups may expand on this for an entire remake of the early games.

This, to me, makes most clear by contrast what was lost in the modern reboot. 1] Lara's moveset. Probably the most impactful loss for the feel of the game. 2] That sense that you discovered the linear path rather than were pointed along it. 3] You can just want treasure. That can be the impetus. 4] Globetrotting! Let her travel the world again. 5] Lonesome exploration feel. No crafting trees, no waves of soldiers, no thousand collectables. World feels vast and you feel humbled by it. I say this as someone who began with TR3. Never really played the first two. But the flavour of these games, what I fell for when I began playing them, and to an extent intact all the way through the first reboot and up to the end of Underworld, is so clear. This wonderful project brings it back to its strengths. Makes me feel like I felt when I first played TR3. Wow, these levels! Wow, the sheer scale! I'm so clever for figuring out how to get across that bit that looked like you can't get across it. 6] There's also Lara's attitude that was significantly toned down, but that's not showcased here since there isn't a cutscene. Definitely still worth a mention.

Those of us who played the original secretly know how simplified the controls really are here. I remember having to calculate jumps and using L1, R1 to do the side-step on ledges and whatnot.

Most of that complexity comes down to the old school engine. It's nearly impossible to translate that into a modern video game. This remake was clearly based on the Legend/Anniversary/Underworld game mechanics and I think the creator did an excellent job as far as giving the player the illusion of having the freedom to explore. I love how a lot of the climbable surfaces aren't obvious and blend well into the environment, that's something that's bothered me in the LAU trilogy where every ledge stood out and had this white texture on it. Still, it would've been cool to be able to climb everything like in the classics and no invisible walls but this is fanmade after all.

@@braswan I used to like search all corners of the internet for every single conceivable LCTR artwork, rumour, everything, and it was awesome that she was kind of treated like she was real, with interviews, characteristics, tastes in music and television, Lara Croft WAS real back then, and it was kind of another level of immersion, as a kid/teen she was my hero, to the point where I started climbing, camping and trekking because I wanted to be like her lmao and fun thing is I was actually pretty good on the extreme sports side of things, but that was before reality (and drugs) hit me hard and I became kind of too lazy to dream of adventure, but yeah still she is a real honest to god role model to people hahah

This demo of Tomb Raider 2 Remake was so well done. The final lobby level was completely remade. I didn’t watch the video prompts. I fumbled for a long time and still didn’t know what the use of climbing up the flagpole was. Finally, I found that jumping from the flagpole to the stone pillar on the opposite side would Collapse, the route is out. Sure enough, the fence below was broken open. Go downstairs and push the rocks below. Push down through the broken fence. A big pit will appear below. The road will indeed appear. Once you get to the bottom of the pit, the game is over. What a shame, the demo is really nice.

I don't believe the author will go any further from level 1 or a few level from it. This Level 1 of the remake is quite old already and it was already near perfect many many years ago. I was looking forward for Level 2 to Level 17 so many years but here in 2021 the author is still improving Level 1 and doesn't move further.

Heh, it took me hours to get to 4:35 in the original. Looks gorgeous; probably hard to appreciate the dramatic change when you don't see the default game in comparison. It also seems to me that climbing works a little faster here, but I could be wrong.
