A deleted scene from Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness provided by composer Peter Connelly. The scene fills in the gaps on how Lara survived the events of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation.
Angel of Darkness Writer Murti Schofield explains her intended role in the game: "Putai was intended as a mentor figure in a way that Lara’s more earthly mentors could not hope to operate. She was a shamanic link to all the mythical roots of the worlds that Lara had been adventuring in for the whole of her life. What Putai would have been able to teach Lara was on a different, more refined, more elemental level than she had previously been able to perceive. And once Lara had begun to transform and understand her place in this mythical domain she would find all kinds of otherwise inaccessible secrets opening up to her. She would be able to unlock the Portal of the Centuries."

Another sad reminder of how much work was put into this game. Even for a deleted scene this misunderstood classic was WAY ahead of its time. It's a shame that it was slammed and blamed upon the developers when no one has a clue of the whipped treatment Core went through by Eidos.

Who blamed it on Core, apart from Eidos? If you look around the internet, everybody bashes Eidos for not giving Core enough time. But was time really the issue? AOD was developed in 3+ years, more than Legend, with drastically different results. I don't think Core would've ever released a complete and bug-free game, regardless of having 5 or 6 years. The franchise had just got to big for the team, they couldn't handle it. Eidos realized this and so they forced the release to be around the same time as the film, so they could at least recover some of the money.

Astrius A Core member even disclosed this on Tomb Raider forum (s) along with loose publications (the latter I don’t remember much), saying how Eidos has been constantly pushing Core to release a TR game, year after year since the first title in ‘96, back to back until 2000. It’s the reason why they wanted to kill Lara off in The Last Revelation and yet Eidos still wanted more. They even expressed creative fatigue and exhaustion, if not just the corporate abuse they endured. AOD gave them resurged interest given that it was made for next gen at the time (and creatively speaking, they were way ahead of its time). Unfortunately due to Eidos and Paramount wanting to release the game on time with the 2003 Angelina Jolie film “Tomb Raider:The Cradle of Life”, they had no choice but to release what was clearly not complete. And believe me, from the time AOD released all the way until Tomb Raider Legend’s 2006 launch, people have been bashing CORE without question. It wasn’t until some time after that the revelation that EIDOS was really at fault then, people started to realize and make sense of it all.

@@ShMartinJo As I said before, Crystal Dynamics developed a fully fleshed-out and complete TR:L (2006) in less than 3 years, while Core couldn't do the same given more than 3 years for TR:AOD (2003), (during development of TR:C, part of the team branched out to work on TR:AOD). Don't get me wrong, I know the story and I know Core had been pushed to release one TR a year and ended up burnt out. But how is it Eidos' fault when CD worked with Eidos as well and they were able to handle it just fine? TR got really big and Core wasn't ready for it. I'm not saying they were a bunch of incompetents, I'm just saying they couldn't deliver the task they were asked to. Poor management? Too small of a team? Lack of experience with PS2? I don't know the exact reasons. All I know is that there have been videogames much more complex than TRAOD that have been developed in less than 3 years. 3+ years was more than enough to create TR:AOD, all they needed was good resource management and expand the team if necessary. I'm sorry, TR:AOD is still one of my favourites, if not the one. But we should be objective here. Core did an awesome job for the first few years, but they couldn't keep up with how the videogame industry was growing and changing. And that's totally on them. Also blaming your boss for not being able to deliver is very unproffessional.

@@astrius4125 I gotta agree here. I think lack of good morale within the development team was an issue as well. From what I read in an article with some of the developers (I can link it if you want), there were a lot of people there who were inexperienced and also those who just stopped caring. And they had too much ambition than what they could pull off unfortunately. Eidos takes a lot of the blame, but so does Core Design. Also, it seems the rushing did mess up Crystal Dynamics when it came to Underworld. It seemed buggy, but not as bad as Angel of Darkness obviously. However, you're right, Crystal was able to get the job done on time and with their projects in good enough shape which is exactly why they got the franchise to begin with.

It's such a shame that Edios ruined this game. It's plot had so much potential had the developers been given more time. I mean, Kurtis would've been an interesting character if he was fleshed out a bit more and have more background into his past and secret organisation, instead he was met by contempt and was a boring playable character. I hope Square Enix digs it out the grave after finishing the Reboot, I would so play this game then! Also, they have the modern tech now to polish and smoothen out the controls!

St. Michael I love Aod but it needs to be remade. To get rid of the bugs and add in the chunks that were cut out and maybe be make some of the levels a bit more fun. I love the game to death but I tried replaying it again and I couldn't because there is a game breaking bug in The Sanitarium where nothing renders and everything is black except Kurtis/Naruto

Me too. Sadly, it's not the case for everyone as the newer games have more sells. I think that's because of the good quality of the games, not the storyline. The storyline is sh*tty tbh and they're far from the ones in the "Old school" TR games. But if crystal dynamics make a remake... oh it's all gonna come back.

@Nyah Desu That sounds weird, because Core Design hadn't disappeared when Legend was developed. There even was another game developed by Core (Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition) that was supposed to launch after Legend, but again Eidos was sneaky and told Crystal to start developing the same game (Tomb Raider: Anniversary) at the same time, and ended up scraping the franchise from Core, without paying them even a cent for their work, leaving them to close forever.

I wish the story/game transitions between The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness would have been more smooth and insightful. Now it is left all a bit foggy what exactly happened between the last cutscene in The Last Revelation and the beginning cutscene in The Angel of Darkness. All we know is that Von Croy found Lara in Egypt in the ending cutscene in Chronicles. But how did she survive all those time inbetween and what happened afterward exactly? Who was this shaman Putai exactly and what did she to/for Lara and why? And what's so important about this amulet Putai is refering to here? So many questions left unanswered...

Von Croy only found Lara's backpack, it was Putai (or Putai's tribe) that found Lara. Putai helped her heal and gave her the amulet to... help Lara gain her strength and abilities back, basically. But as Putai says in the video, it comes gradually to Lara, as needed. It was suppsoed to be a part of the game, but was cut as many other things.

Look up TRAOD: Restoration Project and TRAOD: Definitive Edition. The things they've managed to do with the game are nothing short of a miracle. The graphics have been cleaned up, the lighting updated, most of the bugs are fixed, the cut content restored and in working order, the controls have been polished up, and recently they've added Legend style controls for those who can't get used to the tank controls of olden times. If you are a fan of this game, there's no other way to play it.

Even though this deleted part makes sense I'll never be able to understand why her costume was angel of darkness costume rather than the blue top from ps1 tomb raider that would have made it more realistic in the game. For those who dont know what happened in Egypt lara lost her grip ( in a blue top costume) and some how its angel of darkness costume like towards the end of the game costume, cus we all know as soon as she hits the Louvre shes in combat pants lol I'll never understand this. I'm not taking the piss either I'm a real old school tomb raider fan 😁

There is lighting on her face at the beginning of the video, which means there was storm outside, exactly as it was in the scene when she met with Von Croy in his apartment . Then the image transitioned to the falling scene. I think she was still in his apartment, but that's a flashback caused to her by his presence. When you have PTSD or any sort of trauma, it is normal to re-live the traumatic event when you see anything or anyone associated with it. That's why she is in her AOD outfit when she falls. It was not a simple memory. She felt it as it was happening to her again in that present moment. It was not the TR4 Lara falling, but the AOD Lara experiencing the falling again . And I know that she wears her jeans outfit for the Von Croy scene, but who knows? Probably she was supposed to wear that black top and shorts for the scene, but they changed their minds later.

So Lara dies at the end of tomb raider 4 and is resurrected by an ancient shaman residing within the pyramid, but at the cost of her memories. Which is why she seems to spend most of the game in sort of daze never really having a full grasp on what's going on, The amulet was supposed to help her awaken her memories as time went on, but as we all know the story was never finished, so it never really went anywhere.
