I have to stop and thank you for your videos. Your walks and outings are incredibly soothing to me. I am battling cancer. My anxiety can run rather high. Watching your videos, listening to your voice and getting lost in scanning the ground with you soothes my nerves like an old lullaby. Thank you.

So many crafting opportunities on that beach! Mosaics, rebuilding bottles and jars in new and interesting ways, jewellery, decoupatch, wind chimes and mobiles..... Heaven! I found some of that green tile in my garden recently with some pipe stems and broken bottles. I had thought maybe it was more modern but nice to think it may have more age than I thought.

I'll certainly be attempting some of those crafts, hopefully very soon... though the videos might take a while. I'm still moving, it's a mess, but... I'm going to have a dedicated craft area. 🙂 I think the green tiles became popular in the mid Victorian period... I'd guess they were probably made for at least a few decades; might still be.

I keep trying to remember when it's spring time, but still haven't tried eating the young stems. 🙂I think a food shortage in the UK is actually quite likely, we have a few months worth of food in stock; might not be enough... but my girlfriend has tought me quite a lot about foraging. 🙂

Here in America and having mudlarking and river trekking envy. I used to bottle dig when I was a kid ....but like all things ...changes happened, more people, less access with private ownership. I so enjoy how you look at objects and don’t collect like a dragon adding to its hoard. It’s refreshing and purposeful. Would love to see a restoration of a earthenware pot using the Japanese method of repair. Imperfection and perfection in balance. Be well. Thank you for the great videos. They are refreshingly simplistic ....but not simple.

Thanks Elaine. As luck would have it; I was a bit clumsy with one of the stoneware pots I brought home from a previous outing, and have one to mend. I shall probably practice first on some simple dinnerware plates and bowls I have which have fallen recently... and hope to make a nice video out of them all as well as some beautiful things. I'm glad you like me being more selective about things; I was far less restrained when I first started, and even as recently as my previous video at that site. Restraint is something I've been learning, and is now an imperative in my lock down circumstances. 🙂

Hi Tom! Brilliant video :) Your piece of uranium glass was a honeypot in the shape of a bee hive and there would have been a thatched roof lid to go with it. It is American I think, a company called Boyd bought the mould and still makes different versions so it’s quite difficult to date it.

It does make me quite sad that there are so many things in the river that do not have any place there. I am glad you do what you can to take away the things you can manage. Yes, the river carries so much; this particular one is still spitting out ancient treasures by the time it reaches the sea... last year someone found a Bronze Age Sword there. It's possible some of the things going into it today will be ancient by the time they're found. 🙂 Not quite a castle, but a very nice little 17th century cottage... it's going to be a nice place to live and work on videos. 🙂

Thanks Katy, I do have a rock collection, but there's very little variety in these rivers... mostly limestone, shale and millstone grit. You’re braver than me...I’ve been beyond my garden gate twice since mid February...so your videos, and those of folk like kit and caboodlers, northern mudlarkers and sea glass Ireland have kept me from going downright bonkers. Thank you! Xxx

Sad as erosion is, I am fascinated at seeing how different the river and dump site are compared to last year. Due to the amount of rain we receive, we have a lot of erosion here in Washington State, especially along our rivers. The Army Corps of Engineers usually will help stem that with strategically placed massive rocks or other tactics. I'm surprised that rocks haven't been used on your river there. Maybe limited accessibility and unstable hillside prevent it? Glad you are keeping healthy and staying safely quarantined. :-)

Bottles, and pipe bowls, and bee's! Oh my! Such a lovely walk. Oh, how my heart dropped as I saw you walk past the clay pots and the few ink pots I spotted. I just love the wide mouth bottles and jars, so useful for so many things. I would never be able to go with you, as I would have you carrying 3-4 heavy bags of my finds back to my car! Ha! Yes, I said "you" would be carrying them. Seriously though, don't go cold turkey on the milk glass, as the project you might dream up for their use may need more than the bottles you already have. Would hate for you to be almost finished and be like "Oh no, I am completely out, I need at least 12 more!" And then where would you be, I ask you? Such a fun day. Until next time, stay safe and keep tight of those you cherish!

Those tiles are so pretty and I kind of like the Jasperware too. At what point does collecting become hoarding? Asking for a friend 🤣🤣🤣

I think I have gotten dangerously close to hoarding occasionally :D I guess it's when you carry home things you already have; and have no use for and no plan for finding it a new home. I can understand people liking the jasperware, I just prefer things more rough, and simple, like the tiles. 🙂

I don’t see the river as damaging the landscape. The human pollution of the land has diverted the river. Thanks for your thoughtful commentary on your excursion. Very enjoyable video.

Yes, the river wants to go where humans have built a hill of rubbish, and it will. It's fun finding the things that get cut out, but it's also sad and tragic, and a duty to take some of the lead and plastics before they get into the river. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

Well thank you Tom for leaving that bottle behind for me if you just give the location I will go and pick it up haha . Very enjoyable video again who’s coming to visit or do we have to wait and see think it may be someone I also follow . My broken pottery that I’ve found I’ve been using as mosaic for plants pots etc . I have quite a bit of broken pipe stem and wondering what I could possibly make with them . One of my river visits has yielded about 30 or so rubber bottle tops which I have painted different colours with model paints and then put them into driftwood and hung them up in the garden against a wall and look quite good . Also found an old teapot minus its spout which I have since attached another spout totally different colour to the original one but looks good in the garden all my finds end up in the garden one way or another .Its amazing what you find when you really look.Love the view from your window also lucky you .

It might settle your mind a bit to know that Japanese knotweed doesn't make seed in the UK. All our plants are clones of one female plant brought here by a plant collector and we have no male plants to fertilise the flowers. You still have to be careful not to move plant material about as it can reroot from small cuttings.
@stashedawayman1521

In the UK, Japanese knotweed - Reynoutria japonica is only present as a single female clone so any seed produced would I believe be infertile. It is easily propagated from broken root fragments being transported in soil movements or perhaps on footwear. Indian balsam - Impatiens glandulifera is spread by the explosive seed capsules and has thus colonised many counties in the UK. The cliff of the dump is unstable, as unvegetated and appears composed mainly of free draining domestic ash and clinker. The planted birch trees are clearly container grown and their roots have become 'brainwashed' into circling within the pots in which they were grown and have not ventured out into the surrounding unsuitable growing medium. The collapse of the dump may be related to the natural angle of repose of the angular clinker and domestic waste of which the dump is composed.

The seeds, roots and rhizomes of the Japanese knotweed in the UK are all capable of germinating... and I have to check my clothes when I leave the site, both for the seeds, and bits of root in the sole of my shoes, I'd be commiting a criminal offence if I caused it to spread, (although sadly no authority seems to care much when I report it's encroaching presence). I agree, the birch trees were almost certainly pot grown... the council has planted 3 more rows, of younger saplings this time, though the river is coming too fast for them to make any difference. I think the cliff collapses for a variety of reasons; the river does cut out the lower level, creating overhangs when it's flooding... there's not enough cohesion in the hill to support overhangs for long. Interesting what you've said, thank you... I've learned some things. 🙂

@@tomburleigh9261 A Local Authority that I worked for had to pay out £55k to a local resident when a patch of Japanese Knotweed was found to have encroached from a LA owned car park onto land where the resident wanted to extend his cottage. The presence of the knotweed delayed his building works so compensation had to be paid. It was an uninsured risk; that money could have been better spent on LA parks and open spaces.

@tammy whalen !n the 60s I had my stream nearby. No relics, but nature abound! Glacial rocks of all kinds to cross the babbling brook, berry & apple trees, even wild strawberries. Oh the dragonflies and butterflies! The water was crystal clear to drink! A train track ran beside it, and hobos waved from the open car doors as they went by. They once left behind their campfire, complete with an empty can of beans :-)
