Most people don’t realize that “Surf Rider” was originally named “Spudnik”, a play on the Russian satellite Sputnik, and was written by The Ventures’ lead player, Nokie Edwards, shortly after at that Satellite went into orbit, which was before the Surf craze. When Surf Instrumentals became the rage, in the early to mid-1960s The Ventures changed the name of the song to “Surf Rider” and included it on the their Surfing album. It’s one of the many tidbits of Ventures lore that my friend Nokie shared with me. Sadly, he died last year.

Awesome. Do you know why/ how I keep getting notifications that the ventures have a new album? Like every few months lol.
@nickclark735 жыл бұрын
@@jeffhussey1089 The Ventures released it originally as Spudnik on their Mashed Potatoes and Gravy album. Later the Lively Ones asked permission to use part of the song on one of their own. As it turned out, they copied it note for note, calling it Surf Rider. The Ventures earned royalties for the song, so going forward they dropped Spudnik and referred to their version as Surf Rider too.

I LOVE listening to this reverb-drenched music! I saw the Ventures in concert about 20 years ago. The crowd was out of their seats dancing after the first note! By the way, Nokie Edwards was one of the most INCREDIBLE rock guitarists to ever stand on a stage! Nokie, along with the legendary Dick Dale, practically INVENTED surf music back in the 60’s...both men should get the recognition they truly DESERVE!
