Used to surf this wave back in the day! (Needles that is). Absolutely terrifying paddle out as usually did it from Alum Bay itself, although did it by Kayak a few times which was much more doable but also a lot more hassle. You just dump the kayak in the bay and paddle back round.......as long as its a neap tide and also around/just before low. The problem is that when its bigger than a few feet it literally drains off the ledge and is completely unsurfable, but then you go further along the cliff to the inside and ride the left in front of the huge cliff fall inside of Alum Bay. I believe Ian Pacey (surfer) has surfed it too. It also works on a higher tide on a decent size swell but the currents are too scary for me! I will have to dig out the footage from 10+ years ago if I can find it! 😁🤘🏄

@@spongersurfer yea man, we have shred alumn bay a bunch of times in big storms, but never seen the slab at the end working. Pretty sure it a terrible idea to paddle it all the way to the needles. Arguable if you would make it, or be able to stay in the line up at all. Would be interested to see the footage! 🤟🤟👍

@@tomcourtkite Paddle is horrendously scary! Oddly you can walk a fair bit of it along the ledge under the cliff. The only time to paddle it is neap tide just before low, that way there was little to no current out there, although once the tide starts pushing in again you are quite safe as long as you dont paddle outside the needles themselves. You do still get the current between the rocks but it really isn't anything that can't be handled on a neap tide. I haven't done it since.....probably 2014, which is when the last of the people I used to go on mad surf missions with left the island. Our aim always used to be to surf waves where there was no one else around and we found some incredible spots over the years, still most of them are unsurfed too! So much fun!!!!

You found my secret spot :) on a big swell it gets hollow underneath the lighthouse... iv'e surfed it but haven't tried foiling it yet. Iv'e been meaning to take the Fliteboard out to the sand banks for some time now but as you know they waves break all over the place and the current can be lethal. Well done for exploring it for me it will give me the impetus to try it. I'm thinking in the summer we should hook up and you should try foiling behind our 20 ton 55 foot motorboat... It's got to be head high, Keep exploring and being an inspiration and hats off to your dad for charging...
