Don't you just love good marine art! Here, I visit the studio of one of Britain's finest - Colin Baxter. We look at some of his work then let him loose to tell us how he started out, and how he has developed such a high level of technical expertise. There are some lovely boats to enjoy as well…

I am probably in one of those paintings with my Smack Our Boys racing out of the Colne.. There are many artists who paint these classic old boats but very few that can paint them well.. Keep up the good work..p

Every time I watch Tom’s videos I think of the quote from literature “Believe me my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

Great video Tom. Sue and I are lucky enough to have one of Colin's paintings. Ours is of east coast smacks racing out of the River Colne and is painted on an old Admiralty chart of the Colne/Blackwater confluence. We had no idea that he also created models as well - what a beautiful studio!!

What a wonderful artist. Nothing annoys me so much as paintings of sailing ships that are wrong, so lovely to see correct marine art. I have paintings of all my ships done by Vic Stone (Well Her Majesties ships). I must ask Colin to paint Tiffy, but I would ask for the blonde. Yours Aye, Buster.

Hi Tom, thanks for the video. There are a few bits of the Herzogen Cecilie in the Salcombe Maritime Museum (which punches above its weight) and I am told the remnants of the wreck are still there in the bay.

I really wonder why no one is building something like a barque or hermaphrodite brig anymore. These were amazing ships. I mean today you see ketches, schooners and Falcon/DynaRig superyachts but no models combing fore-and-aft rigged sails with square-rigged ones. So my dream is still to build a modern-classic hermaphrodite brig one day.

Lack of skilled shipwrights and sailors. We don't have a pool of men with the aptitude to call upon. Not only would the crew wages make it uneconomic, even if you could find them, but basic things like blocks and wire are mainly used on leisure and training vessels today, and the prices are probably 10 or 20 times more, in relative terms, than 100 years ago. Not to mention riggers' hourly charges... I think many people would love to see big square-riggers carring cargo, including me, but I can't see how it would happen. The City of Adelaide, similar to the Cutty Sark, is rotting away for lack of funding so newbuilds just seem like fantasy at this point, sadly.
